Chapter 82 - Konoha’s Vein Map: The Collision of Old and New Order

The Nara clan compound.

At its core, it was deathly quiet.

So quiet that one could almost hear pine needles falling to the ground.

Rustle.

At that moment, a hurried figure flashed through the silence.

Yamanaka Inoichi.

His face still carried traces of agitation and lingering fear.

To the Nara clansmen, however, this scene was nothing unusual.

As one of the Ino–Shika–Chō trio, the two clans shared deep bonds. The clan heads themselves were close friends.

Someone barging straight in like this?

Perfectly normal.

Tap, tap, tap.

Before long, Inoichi reached the inner courtyard.

Ancient and understated, with tea fragrance curling gently in the air.

Nara Shikaku sat formally at the main seat, his expression calm.

Only his fingers betrayed him—unconsciously rubbing the warm rim of his teacup.

Across from him, Akimichi Chōza was tearing open a fresh bag of chips.

"Inoichi? What's with that look…?"

Shikaku paused mid-motion, then gave a dry chuckle.

Inoichi fell silent for a moment before forcing a bitter smile.

"The Aburame clan… is finished. Uchiha Kai is terrifying."

His voice was hoarse.

Exhaustion from narrowly escaping disaster lingered on his face—along with fear he couldn't fully suppress.

When he left earlier, the Yamanaka compound had still been smoking.

That young boy's cold decisiveness felt like an icy blade hanging over the Yamanaka clan's heads.

With no other option, he'd come here for help.

Crunch—crack.

Chōza grunted and stuffed a handful of chips into his mouth, chewing with unusual force.

It was as if he wasn't eating snacks—but grinding down unease.

"That Uchiha Kai brat… he's not human."

His voice still trembled slightly.

Last night's events had carved themselves deep into his memory.

"He is human," Shikaku replied calmly, pouring himself another cup of tea.

"It's just that the power he holds… isn't on the same level as ours."

As he spoke, Shikaku suddenly lifted his gaze.

It passed through the courtyard wall, as if he could already see that small figure approaching.

"Power isn't what's scary," he said quietly.

"What's scary is power in the hands of someone who is both calm and mad."

He paused.

"That Uchiha boy… may grow into someone like him."

Silence followed.

Shikaku glanced at the other two.

Seeing neither objection nor denial, he continued:

"And Shibi failed to understand that 'line.'"

Not far away, thick black smoke was still rising from the Aburame compound.

Why?

The answer was obvious.

Just as his words settled—

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Clear footsteps echoed outside the courtyard.

Unhurried. Steady.

Wooden sandals stepped onto the stone path layered with pine needles, each step faint yet distinct.

Each one struck the taut strings of the three clan heads' nerves.

They exchanged glances.

Someone had arrived.

And—

It was the very person they'd been talking about.

Creeeak—

The courtyard gate slid open.

A small figure stood at the entrance.

Morning light spilled in, casting the black of the Uchiha clan robes into sharp relief.

Uchiha Kai.

His face showed little emotion.

Only a trace of weariness—

A child already pulling all-nighters for power and order.

Yet the moment Kai's calm gaze swept across them, an invisible pressure descended.

Chōza and Shikaku stiffened at once.

This pressure—

They had only ever felt it from the Third Hokage.

Beside them, Inoichi visibly shuddered and lowered his head, not daring to meet Kai's eyes.

The earlier scene replayed vividly in his mind.

In his heart, Kai had already been branded invincible.

"Nara clan head."

Kai ignored the other two, looking straight at Shikaku.

Straight to the point.

"The Konoha Financial Oversight Committee needs a real mind—someone who can untangle the accounts, set things right, and identify the parasites gnawing at the village."

His voice was light. Almost indifferent.

Yet every word landed like a hammer in Inoichi's chest.

Especially the word parasites.

His face went even paler.

Across from him, Shikaku was clearly taken aback.

He had expected the same pattern as before.

Force.

Intimidation.

Muscle-flexing.

But Kai's words suggested something else entirely.

After a slow breath, Shikaku set his teacup down and stood.

His posture was low—but not servile.

"Kai-sama. The Nara clan is willing to cooperate. However…"

He raised his head, eyes sharp as he met Kai's gaze.

"Clearing parasites requires a sharp blade."

"But governing Konoha—especially its deeply rotted finances—requires more than a blade."

"It requires a clear vein map."

"Otherwise…"

His voice dropped slightly.

"The blade may strike not the tumor—

but Konoha's very lifeblood."

With that, Shikaku fell silent.

He stared straight at Kai, watching for the slightest reaction.

This was a test.

Or rather—

a declaration of value.

The Nara mind was that vein map.

As the Third Hokage's right-hand man, and the Fourth Hokage's close friend, Shikaku had long seen Konoha's rot.

He simply hadn't been able to touch it.

Until now.

Kai's eyes shifted slightly.

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he glanced at the thick account books in front of Shikaku—and walked over.

Then—

He sat down.

So this was a test?

Fine.

He casually flipped open the heavy ledger.

Flap—flap—

Pages turned like flowing water.

To others, the numbers might as well have been heavenly script.

To Kai—

They were crude.

With his past-life accounting skills, they were almost laughable.

And once his Sharingan and Byakugan activated—

Not only did his vision sharpen, his thoughts became crystal clear.

Patterns emerged.

Connections surfaced.

"Root intercepted forty percent of A-rank mission rewards. Handler: Shimura Danzō. Usage unknown."

"Wind Country border patrol subsidies overstated by thirty percent for three consecutive years. Handler: Utatane Koharu. Funds ultimately funneled into family assets."

"Nine-Tails Incident orphan relief funds—three years ago reduced to thirty percent of approved amounts. Difference laundered through Aburame intermediaries…"

Kai's voice remained flat.

But with each line he read aloud, Inoichi and Chōza's expressions darkened further.

These were the real entries—

Carefully buried beneath mountains of trivial bookkeeping.

Shikaku had known them because he'd been tracking them for years.

But Kai had just opened the books—

And seen through them instantly.

How?

Did the Uchiha start investigating this long ago?

Kai ignored their shock.

After a while, he closed the ledger and stretched lazily.

A faint, detached smile flickered in his eyes.

"Nara clan head," he asked calmly,

"this 'vein map' you speak of—"

"Is it a hole gnawed out by parasites…"

"Or the true meridians of Konoha's great tree?"

There was no trace of childishness in his tone.

Instead, it sounded like a seasoned veteran peeling back a final layer.

Shikaku's heart jolted.

Kai's response exceeded every expectation.

That single question was a direct probe—

Was the Nara clan's map a patchwork of the old order's rot?

Or the foundation of the new order?
