Chapter 7 - Chapter 7:Apology That Shook The Room

Lena sensed it before she heard it.

The tension in the office that morning felt heavier than usual, like something was waiting to explode. Conversations were hushed. Phones were answered quickly. Even the printers seemed quieter.

She had barely settled at her desk when an email notification popped up.

Mandatory All-Staff Meeting – Conference Hall A. Attendance Required.

Her stomach tightened.

Meetings were never good news.

She stood slowly, grabbed her notebook, and followed the crowd toward the conference hall. Every step felt heavier than the last.

The room filled quickly.

Editors sat stiffly. Assistants whispered behind raised hands. Interns looked nervous. Lena chose a seat near the back, hoping she could remain unnoticed.

Then the doors opened.

Ethan Blackwood walked in.

Not as the intern who laughed easily or offered quiet encouragement.

As the CEO.

The room fell silent instantly.

He stood at the front, hands clasped together, his expression serious. He looked calm, composed — but Lena noticed the tightness in his jaw. The tension in his shoulders.

This wasn't easy for him.

Her heart pounded painfully.

"I called this meeting because I owe someone an apology," Ethan began.

A ripple of murmurs spread through the room.

"This apology should have been private," he continued, "but my mistake became public the moment I let lies exist where honesty should have been."

Lena's breath caught.

He lifted his gaze, finding her.

"To Lena Moore."

Every head turned.

Heat rushed to her face, but she didn't move.

"I entered this company under false pretenses," Ethan said clearly. "I allowed someone to trust me without trusting them enough to tell the truth."

The room was so quiet Lena could hear her own heartbeat.

"I want to be clear," he said. "Lena did nothing wrong. She did not manipulate, plan, or benefit from my deception."

Her hands trembled.

"She worked hard," he continued. "She showed integrity when no one was watching. And she deserves respect."

Silence followed.

Then, slowly, someone clapped.

One person.

Then another.

Applause spread through the room, uncertain but sincere.

Lena stared straight ahead, fighting tears.

When the meeting ended, people began to talk at once. Some looked at her with sympathy now. Others looked thoughtful. The whispers had changed.

She didn't stay to hear them.

Lena left the room quickly and headed for the stairwell, her chest tight, emotions crashing into one another.

She reached the landing before footsteps echoed behind her.

"Lena."

She stopped but didn't turn.

"You didn't have to do that," she said quietly. "You didn't have to make it public."

"I did," Ethan replied. "The lie was public."

She turned then, her eyes bright. "You don't get to decide how I heal."

He nodded, accepting the truth of it. "I know. I only wanted to take responsibility."

Silence settled between them.

"I meant every word," he added softly.

She searched his face, seeing no arrogance now. Only regret.

"I don't hate you," she admitted. "But I don't trust you."

"That's fair," he said.

"I need space," she continued. "Real space."

"You'll have it," he promised. "No pressure. No expectations."

She hesitated, then nodded once.

That night, Lena sat at her small desk, staring at her notebook.

She thought of the room full of people. Of Ethan standing alone at the front, admitting his fault without excuses.

It didn't erase the pain.

But it mattered.

She wrote slowly, carefully:

Sometimes an apology doesn't fix what was broken. Sometimes it simply proves that what you felt was real.

She closed the notebook.

Her heart was still guarded.

But it was no longer completely closed.
