Chapter 40 - Gripping Kakashi in One Hand, Stepping on Yamato, Laughing to the Heavens

[Fusion successful. Congratulations, host has obtained the superior trait:

Wood Release Cells · Fragment (Blue). Cell division speed reduced.]

With the boost from Wood Release · Wood Locking Wall,

the Wood Release Cells · Fragment trait finally showed real improvement.

Especially the ability to control the rate of cell division—

that effect was now crystal clear.

Uchiha Arata closed his eyes and sensed his body for a moment.

The rate of cell division inside him had already dropped to half.

This discovery made him exhale in relief.

"Good. It can be improved."

"Otherwise, the double drain on body and mind would be way too much for little old me."

Who would've thought—

Wood Release was supposed to balance Mangekyō consumption,

yet now both were consuming him at the same time.

"I hate incomplete products…"

He muttered and shifted his gaze.

But at that moment, he suddenly noticed that another trait above his head

was quietly changing.

The once pitch-black, almost purple-black [Seven-Year Itch]

had dimmed slightly.

From that suffocating, eye-searing darkness,

it became noticeably fainter.

The black light mass churned subtly.

Before long, Seven-Year Itch transformed into—

Six Cycles of Reincarnation.

[Detected that the host has spent six years and finally gained the power to change fate.

Trait undergoing metamorphosis.]

[After metamorphosis, the host will obtain the divine-tier trait:

Six-Six Great Fortune (Rainbow).]

"Six-Six Great Fortune? What kind of trait is that?"

Seeing the system prompt, Jin's dark pupils lit up instantly.

He only had two rainbow-tier traits so far.

But—

Whether it was Light's Golden Body or Weak Sense of Presence,

both were concept-level abilities!

They were the very foundation that allowed him to safely loot corpses and grow stronger.

Naturally, his anticipation for this new trait skyrocketed.

Unfortunately, Yamato at his feet woke up several times only to be knocked out again.

By the time the sky was nearly dark, the trait still hadn't shown any sign of completing its metamorphosis.

It remained a hazy, mist-like mass hovering over him.

"Forget it. You do your thing."

Moonlight gradually brightened.

A silver beam poured down over the forest,

slanting across the edge of the pit.

Jin's face flickered in and out of light and shadow.

After an entire day, he finally confirmed something—

this trait's metamorphosis would take a long time.

Or rather…

"Could it be that I actually need to completely change the Night of the Massacre

for it to finish evolving?"

"If that's the case, I can't wait on that two-faced Itachi anymore… way too slow."

He rolled his stiff neck after staying still all day.

Crack crack crack.

His body popped loudly.

Who could understand the pain of staying motionless all day,

only slapping Yamato unconscious every time he woke up?

"Ugh… my head hurts… feels like someone's been hitting me…"

Below, Yamato—now unconscious for the seventh time—rubbed his head groggily.

"It really hurts…"

"Awake again?"

Jin didn't even think. He raised his hand, ready to knock him out again—

when sudden movement came from behind.

Rustle… rustle…

A tall figure slowly stepped out from behind the trees.

Silver hair. Face mask.

Kakashi emerged, his expression strange.

"Ahem… Jin, if you keep hitting him like that,

this guy's head is really going to get smashed in."

"Oh? Kakashi-senpai."

Jin glanced at him calmly.

"So surveillance has gotten so blatant now that you're just walking right up to me?"

Though his tone was flat,

the corner of his mouth curved ever so slightly.

The fish had taken the bait.

Even though Kakashi was still on a seven-day cooldown for trait copying—

making Jin completely uninterested in chatting—

there was one thing that mattered.

The chakra fluctuations from Yamato's injuries were obvious.

Which meant Jin could reasonably guess that at this point,

Kakashi and Yamato were already fairly close.

And that suited him perfectly.

He needed a stable Wood Release farming NPC.

After all, aside from Danzō,

the only person he could farm Wood Release cells from was Yamato.

And Danzō… was a dead man walking.

He wouldn't last many sessions.

Yamato, on the other hand,

was going to live a very long time.

If luck was on his side and he copied true First Hokage cells—

after enough fusions,

who's to say a legendary trait wouldn't emerge?

"Ahem…"

Kakashi walked closer, shock still lingering in his eyes.

He knew the Uchiha family's second son was extraordinary.

Mysterious.

Strong.

Able to notice him without a sound—and disappear just as quietly.

His stealth was exceptional.

But what had he seen today?

From outside the academy, Jin had beaten Yamato all the way out of the village.

Then, beyond the outskirts, he'd stopped hiding entirely—

and beaten Yamato senseless.

Kakashi had seen it clearly.

More than half of Yamato's ribs were broken.

If Jin hit him again, Yamato might actually die.

So Kakashi stepped in, trying to pull Yamato out of danger.

What he didn't realize—

was that he himself had just stepped into danger.

Kakashi gave an awkward smile and gestured at Yamato.

"This one's different from the other Root members."

"He… has his own thoughts. He's a good person."

Between the lines, the message was clear.

He's a good guy.

Don't hit him.

"Why should I care?"

Jin replied without even turning his head.

One sentence.

Kakashi's awkwardness deepened.

The atmosphere grew strange.

In the pit, Yamato struggled to his feet.

He had heard everything.

Shame flashed through his eyes as he stubbornly spoke:

"Kakashi-senpai, you don't need to beg for—"

Boom!

A massive force struck again.

Jin leapt into the air and came straight down!

His speed was lightning-fast!

He brought his foot down without mercy.

Thud—crack!

Yamato was smashed back into the center of the pit.

His body fit perfectly into the ground like a mold.

"Pfft—!"

This time, he couldn't hold on.

A mouthful of blood sprayed out.

His injuries were severe.

"So fast!"

"Jin's taijutsu isn't weaker than an average jōnin's!"

"I've never heard of Uchiha being known for physical strength or taijutsu…"

Kakashi's pupils shrank violently.

That speed—he'd only seen afterimages.

Seeing Yamato's condition, Kakashi panicked.

"Kinoe! Stop!"

He couldn't tell what state of mind Jin was in.

But out of concern for Yamato,

he felt he had to act.

Crackle—crackle.

Lightning flickered in his right hand.

Blue-white arcs spread through the air.

Lightning Release · Chidori!

Fast.

Strong enough to tear through Wood Release with brute force.

This was not an opponent he could treat lightly.

So he opened with a killing move.

To avoid losing track of Jin's movements,

he even uncovered his left eye.

Three crimson tomoe spun rapidly.

Sharingan.

Then his entire body turned into a bolt of lightning and surged forward!

Zzzzt—!

The speed was such that only the sound of lightning remained.

Zzzzt—!

Snap!

At the instant of impact, the lightning was crushed.

Snapped apart by a single violent hand.

One of Jin's feet still pressed down on Yamato's chest.

Meanwhile, the crimson chakra hand formed from his other hand

gripped Kakashi's throat tightly just two meters in front of him.

Restlessness flickered in Jin's eyes.

He laughed—mockingly.

"Kakashi."

"Using something stolen from the Uchiha clan

against an Uchiha…"

"Isn't that—far too naive?"

Opposite him—

Kakashi struggled desperately.

But the moment he looked up, he froze.

Reflected clearly in those complete three-tomoe Sharingan—

was his own utter helplessness.
