◆━━━◆━━━◆
Third Person POV. -- 1st of April -- 2409 --
[Hinode City]
Question. What is Cancer, exactly?
In simplified terms, it's the process where the Cells within a body steps out of the line.
It happens when a cell doesn't obey the program that makes it, rebeling against that system, and going rogue within the body. It starts to eat more than it's supposed to, doesn't die when it's comanded so.
That's the reason most of the time, Villains are also considered cancers of society. Because they are outlaws, people who go against the established system that makes society work.
Now, you might be wondering, what is this guy rambling on about?
Well, turns out that for Benihana Retsu, who has complete and utter control over her own Blood Cells and can change them into any cell type, replacing those rebeling cells with new ones is just a piece of cake for her.
And in order for future cancer cells not to pop up, she has made herself the bane of the human failure that is cancer.
Using her transformed blood to command the body's cell system to look, identify, and destroy the cells that go rogue, quickly making new ones after them.
In simpler terms, she teaches the body to see the difference between a normal cell, and a cancered cell.
The system that watches over our cells can't differentiate a normal cell from a cancer one, seeing them both as the same, with the cancer cell just having one or 2 protrusions that the system will think as normal.
Retsu's solution is teaching the body system that no, those protrusions shouldn't exist, this makes the body system start acting against those cells, preventing any future cancer cells from popping up and destroying the ones that have developed.
Anyways, we have tracked away from the story long enough, so let us get to that part now.
.
..
...
It all started in Qing Qing city, at China. Where the first ever quirk was dis- oh no wait, wrong script! Sorry...
.
..
...
It's the year 2409, atleast 2 years has passed since Benihana Retsu became a doctor. And she's currently 6 years old, the age where she should be starting elementary school.
.
..
...
It's currently 12:50 in the morning, within Shuzenji Hospital, the place is peaceful and quiet, –not something you'd expect from the hospital housing a miracle that the whole world wants.
Within a private office dedicated to one single doctor, two people are currently occupying the room.
One is an older japanese woman with long dark green hair that has patches of silver showing, making one conclude that she's In her older ages, along with weary and tired grey eyes.
The other one is a man in his 20s, same hair color as the older woman, but sitting in a wheelchair.
A former pro hero that got into an accident, crippling himself from the waist down and having to live the rest of his life on a wheelchair.
These duo are from Hinode City, the same city that this hospital is a part of, but they had to make private reservations, –the mother having to spend all her savings in order to get a private meeting with the famous miracle, and they made reservations months ago but only now are able to see her.
It's currently 12:52, just 8 minutes short of break time for the hospital staff, and the duo of mother and son are thinking that their reservations may be delayed for until after the break.
That doesn't happen though, as in the next moment, from a side door leading to this office, a 128 cm (4'2 ft) tall girl enters the room.
She is wearing a doctor's white coat on top of her normal outgoing wears, her long black hair is left loose behind her, making it reach all the way to her waist. And her eyes, those sky blue pupils, is half lit while she enters and walks towards them.
If the the duo of mother and son didn't know any better, they'd think she's a doctor's kid, here to play around or something. But they aren't clueless, because they know who this child is.
They still are left perplexed though, for an entirely different reason.
Retsu, seeing their reaction, tilts her head, "what is it? "
The mother shakes her head, her hands up and gesturing, "oh no, nothing. I'm just a little suprised is all. " She looks at Retsu up and down, "I thought you would be younger. The last time i checked, you were 6 years old, weren't you? " The mother asks, making Retsu tild her head, "yes, I am? " She says, making the mother tilt her head too,
"But your appearance doesn't look like a 6 year old's, you're more like an 8 or 9 years old to be honest. "
"I get that a lot. " Retsu says, and doesn't explain further.
Retsu heads to her chair and sits, turning to the computer and start typing. After a few seconds she finds her patient's files and turns to him.
"Kameyama Tetsuo, you are a former Pro Hero codenamed Shellback. Your quirk, Carapace, allows you to transform your back into a sturdy tortoise shell that lets you take on a lot of heavy hits, but there is a limit to it, " Retsu says, making the man lower his head, his eyes dimming in remembrance,
"6 years ago you got into an accident, trying to save a family of three from a strength enhancing quirk user villain.
The blow landed squarely on your lower back, fracturing a lower thoracic vertebra near the junction of the spine and waist after it tore through your quirk.
The vertebra collapsed inward under the force, compressing the spinal cord rather than severing it outright.
Swellings started appearing around the injury, with internal bleeding around the area quickly worsening, cutting off the nerve signals traveling from your brain to your lower body.
By the time you reached medical care, the damage had stabilized into permanent paralysis below the waist, not because your legs got injured, but because the spinal cord could no longer transmit commands past the point of impact." Retsu finishes the report, before turning around to look at the hero, his posture hunched, his eyes having dark circles around them, his visage looking malnourished, –not because of his family not taking care of him, but he himself not caring for his own body.
His mother steps up and puts a hand on her chest, her gaze downward. "Ever since his father and I got a divorce, it's just been me and him. I took care of him until he got older, before he said he wanted to be a hero.
I supported him of course, wanting to see my baby boy shine. And he did, –Atleast for a while... before that incident... " Tears are going down the mother's face, making the son look at her with his heart clenching.
She continues, "ever since then, I've taken care of him here, within this city. I've worked part time jobs, taken longer shifts, just so i could pay his medical bills. But no matter what i did, no doctor could save him anymore.
I had lost hope, " But then the mother looks to Retsu, "my hope was lost, until you came to be.
2 years ago, news came out about a doctor who could do miracles.
A little girl who could cure any medical desease, illness, or disabilities. " The mother's eyes slowly begin to shine, her tears having stopped by now. "I worked my ass off to be able to afford this meeting for the last two years, and only now i am able to see you.
Please, doctor! Can you fix my son's body back to the way it used to be? " She clasps her hands in front of her, as if praying for the gods to help her.
Retsu just gets up from her chair, having become used to scenarios like this by now. "No need for tears, ma'am." She says, before walking towards the man on the wheelchair.
When she's in front of the disabled man, she puts her hand on his lower back, letting her analyze him through touch, seeing the problem that he has.
"Your L1 Vertebrae has caved inwards, and has also fractured the lower and upper ones around it, not letting commands to reach your lower part, making you effectively paralyzed from the waist down.
Doctors can reinforce the area by putting support beams around the damaged bone and take out the fragments. But because technology isn't advanced enough, no prosthetic can take the place of an actual vertebrae. " Retsu deduces, before she straightens and looks at the mother.
"I can help him, and i can do the surgery right here and now. " She says, "all that is left is your approval. " She tells them, leaving the mother and son speechless.
No matter how many times she does this, no patient will ever get used to Retsu's ability to cure a chronic disability on the spot, and without any preperations beforehand whatsoever.
After a minute of the two processing the words they heard, The son nods his head. "Do it, I'm ready! " His eyes are fierce, for the first time since 6 years, his spirit has returned.
Retsu nods once, before she extracts a gallon of blood from her palm, putting it around the sitting man, and lifting him to be put on the bed . His face first, with his back exposed, letting Retsu operate unempeeded.
"Do you prefer to stay for the surgery, ma'am? or exit the room? " Retsu asks, making the Mother snap out of her mind. "O-oh, I'll be staying. –Of course if that's okay with you, Doctor. " She says, making Retsu shrug, "suit yourself. "
She turns to her patient, "now I'll be putting you to sleep first. The next time you wake up, you'll be able to feel your lower body once again. " Retsu says, before enveloping the patient in a cocoon of her blood.
.
..
...
A minute passes before Retsu opens her eyes, the surgery having finished. She extracts her blood from around her patient, letting the mother see that, there has been no changes to her sleeping son's body, except for the fact that the terrible injury that could be seen through his skinon his lower back is gone, the skin unblemished and smooth, as if the skin of a newborn baby's.
Retsu levitates him using her blood and puts him back into his wheelchair, before she turns and goes to her computer. "I have fixed his L1 Vertebrae by making him a new one and extracting the old one from his body, as well as fixed the ones on the lower and upper part of his L1 that were cracked. I also connected his nerves through the bone to his lower body as well.
He should be waking up in about 20 minutes. I recommend to register him into a Rehabilitation center where he will be helped in restoring his ability to walk again.
As for prescriptions, he won't be needing anything. I have already instructed his body in how to best help his intake energy in restoring him to his former self. The only thing he will need is nutrients to trigger those instructions in his body. " Retsu finishes, before a nurse enters the room, letting Retsu know that it's lunch time.
"Thank you, Matsumi-san. Can you please escort my patient to an empty room until he wakes up? " Retsu says, making the nurse look at the other 2.
She nods, "alright. Please follow me. " She says before exiting the room with the mother and unconscious son pair.
After she's left alone, Retsu lifts her hands over her head, stretching her hands and back, before she let's out a sigh and gets up, exiting the office and going towards the cafeteria.
.
..
...
"What is your current status? " A voice comes from an ear-piece lodged into the right ear of a man. The voice is distorted, making the man not even know if they're male of female.
The man is wearing a long coat the color of brown, with a cap on his head to better hide himself. His right eye is patched by a dark eye patch as well, with his head being bald and his left eye shown to be a dark purple color.
The man is standing in an alleyway, looking towards the famous hospital that's a little separated from the other buildings, it's also where his target is.
He puts a hand on his ear piece, before speaking. "I'm at the site, just waiting for an opportunity to get the job done. " He says, his voice hoarse, but most of all, the language he just spoke not being japanese.
No, he just spoke Italian, a language very uncommon here in japan.
"Very well. Update me on the situation if anything pops up. " His ear piece says before being cut from the other side, leaving the man to stare at the hospital.
'Entering the facility is no good. There are many securities and cameras scattered around. I'll just have to wait for a good opportunity to present itself. ' he thinks, before turning around and leaving the dark alley, heading away from the hospital for now.
.
..
...
Back with Retsu.
As she gets to the cafeteria of the hospital, she spots her mother there, along with her Aunt Aimi, the duo chatting while sitting in a corner of the place.
Many others are here as well, some just talking to one another, some in groups, and some by themselfs, choosing the quiet over loud conversations.
The cafeteria is massive. It is infact, the size of a whole football field, with some stairs leading to a second floor.
The Shuzenji Hospital is a private hospital that chooses its patients themselfs. Most of the people who can visit are former pro heroes, active pro heroes, or the elderly of Hinode City.
If somone new wishes to become a patron here, they will have to first identify themselves, as well as make an appointment months before they can enter the facility.
As for emergency situations, stuff like maybe a whole crowd getting injured in a disaster or something, but not having been registered to this hospital before, well, first off no incident like that has happened in the past up until now, but if it ever did then there are 3 other hospitals around the area with Shuzenji being in the middle.
Those other hospitals can help in those scenarios.
This rule was established because of the Shuzenji family's safety themselfs, Authorized personally by the HPSC.
The Shuzenji family is a family of healers. Every generation they produce exceptionally well doctors or other career seekers that go on in helping the country in many fields. Their line is the line with the most people who has produced Quirks based on the concept of helping/support type or healing Abilities.
Their main base is here, in Hinode city, this very hospital that Retsu is walking in right now, but there are other facilities under their name around the whole country as well.
Two generations ago, Shuzenji Chiyo, the elder sister among the two sisters of the family, decided to pursue a different, new career.
She decided to become a pro hero, helping the heroes on the front lines against the villains, and making a name for herself.
Because of that, Villains Targeted the family and were able to kill a promising young lady. If not for that incident, then Retsu may have not even been born at all.
Since then, the Shuzenjis decided to make these fortresses to help people while also protecting themselfs.
As for Kie having resentment against the person who became the cause of her mother's death, well their current relationship should tell you how she thinks about that.
Of the last 3 Generations, the Shuzenjis have continued to become famous even despite the great loss they lived through.
Now, Chiyo has become the heart of UA, the facility that continues to produce top level heroes since it's establishment.
Then it was Kie's turn, somone who married into another formidable family, but still is a legend herself.
She is known as the heart ofHinode City.
Now, it's Retsu's turn, and her moniker shall be decided by the people of japan too.
She shall become known as... –
.
..
...
Once Retsu has gotten her food and come to sit with her Mother and Aunt, the duo are in a deep conversation.
"...And THAT'S WHY, I think he'd be the best option for me! " Aimi finishes, leading to Kie shaking her head.
Retsu sits down, "what are you talking about? " And asks, –leading to Aimi jumping in her place.
"When did you get here??? " Aimi turns around and asks, her heart beating fast because of the scare.
"Just now. " Is Retsu's reply.
"Oh, finished with your miracle treatments already? " Kie says, a small, proud smile on her face, using a name that the crowd decided to put on the treatments she does. "How many has it been since morning? 40? 50? " She asks,
"It's actually been 200 Since she came at 10 am. " Aimi says, leading to Kie giving Retsu an impressed look.
Retsu though, doesn't acknowledge this, "so, what were you guys talking about before i came? " And instead she leads the conversation back.
"Oh, nothing much dear. Just another episodes of your dear Aunt here complaining about her love life~" Kie, in a rare moment, manages to tease Aimi back!
'Hah! Eat that you jerk! That was for all the teasings you made me go through! '
"Oh, it's about her nonexistent love life," Retsu says,
AGH! HIT RIGHT IN THE FEELS!!
"I guess the conversation isn't that important then. "
AGH! ANOTHER CRITICAL HIT!!
Aimi dramatically slumps onto the table, her arms stretched out, her face facing the glass table. "You guys are so mean... " She complains, her voice muffled.
A moment later and Aimi is straight up again, the earlier conversation lost and in the past now. "So anyways, Retsu-chan! " She says, getting the girl's attention.
"What about you, is there anyone you're interested? " She asks, making Retsu pause in her tracks, her eyes opening to gaze at her Aunt, in pure and utter perplexity, utterly left speechless.
"I'm 6." Is the only thing she says, making the woman blink. "So? "
"SO! I'M 6! AS IN 6 YEARS OLD! " Retsu raises her voice, but the woman still shifts her head as if confused, "so? "
By now Retsu has realized that she's doing this on purpose, making the younger Benihana sigh deeply, the deepest she's done until now. 'How? ... Just how is it that she's this old while also this childish?... '
"Don't think about it, dear. I have been asking that question since i was your age, and haven't been able to find an answer yet. Just... It's best if you don't question it... " Kie says, her eyes closed and eating from her bowl of rice, seemingly having read her daughter's mind.
"Tehe~" and Aimi has the audacity to laugh too.
"Sigh. anyways, Mother i need to inform you of something. " Retsu says, getting her mother's attention. "Hm? "
"Today I'll be getting off work early because-" Before she can finish, two hands come from behind her and patches her eyes closed. "Guess whoooo~" A childish voice is heard,
Retsu brings a hand to the ones covering her eyes, a small smile forming on her face. "Himiko, you're early. " She says, leading to the girl to jump and sit to her side, a wide smile on her face, showing off her fangs for all to see.
"Yeah~ but i figured I'd suprise you. And besides, aren't you suprised? " She asks, making Retsu nod, " A little. "
"Well there you go! " The 6 years old girl says, making Retsu sigh with a shake of her head, 'so unreasonable. '
"Anyways, mother. Today I'll be off early because i promised Himiko that We'd be visiting this arcade at the centralshopping mall. I'll be off after my meal. " She says, leading to Kie looking their way.
"Very well. Ai-chan? " Kie looks to Aimi, who nods her head. "Yeah, your schedule is free this afternoon so, go break a few legs kids! "
"Just be careful dear. And wear something to hide yourself better. There will be bodyguards around you surveying from afar, but i still don't want you in any danger, so better be prepared than sorry later. " Kie says, making Retsu nod.
After she eats her lunch, she starts heading out with Himiko.
Of course, she first changes out of her work clothes and dons normal outgoing ones, along with a glass and hat to better hide her identity, then the two are off.
They go outside and into the parking lots, their driver already informed and ready, and they enter the vehicle before going off towards the central shopping mall here at hinode city.
