Chapter 91 - Chapter 85 The Weight Of Silence

Chapter 85: The Weight of Silence

Jay's POV

"JASPER JEAN MARIANO!"

The loud voice that echoed through the house was enough to make Jay groan and pull a pillow over her head.

"No."

"YES."

"No."

"GET DOWN HERE."

Jay sighed dramatically.

Every single morning.

Every.

Single.

Morning.

She sat up and glared at the ceiling.

"Tita Gemma is the reason I have trust issues."

The door suddenly opened.

Aries appeared.

Unfortunately.

"Good morning, ugly."

Jay immediately threw a pillow at him.

Unfortunately, he caught it.

"Still ugly."

"Why are you in my room?"

"To remind you that you're ugly."

"I hope your shampoo expires."

Aries gasped.

"You crossed the line."

"I haven't even started."

"Mom!" Aries shouted dramatically. "Jay is threatening me again!"

"Because you're alive!"

"Fair."

Jay rolled her eyes and climbed out of bed.

A few minutes later, she walked downstairs and immediately regretted it.

Aries was already sitting at the dining table.

Smiling.

Which meant he was planning something.

Angelo sat beside him drinking coffee.

Tita Gemma was placing food on the table.

The moment she saw Jay, her face softened.

"There she is."

Jay instantly hugged her.

"Tita, tell Aries to stop existing."

"I've been trying for years."

"SEE?"

Aries pointed dramatically.

"Nepotism."

"Nobody knows what that means."

"I do."

"You definitely don't."

Angelo laughed into his coffee.

The familiar warmth of home settled around them.

For a little while, Jay forgot about everything else.

The investigations.

The secrets.

The danger.

The questions she still couldn't answer.

For a little while, she was simply Jay.

And she liked it that way.

Unfortunately, Aries existed.

Before she could stop him, he stole a piece of bacon from her plate.

Jay froze.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

She turned her head.

Aries was already chewing.

"Oh."

Angelo immediately stood up.

"Nope."

"Tita," Jay said calmly.

"Yes, dear?"

"Would I get arrested if I threw him off the balcony?"

"Probably."

"Damn."

Aries laughed.

The next ten minutes were filled with arguments, insults, threats, and several attempts on Aries's life.

In other words—

A normal morning.

Yet somewhere in the back of her mind, an uncomfortable feeling lingered.

A feeling she couldn't explain.

Like something was about to happen.

Like a storm was approaching.

And somehow—

She was standing right in its path.

....

Keifer's POV

The Watson mansion was unusually quiet.

Keifer walked downstairs while adjusting his watch.

He expected peace.

Instead—

"THAT'S MY PANCAKE!"

"Finders keepers."

"It was on my plate!"

"Past tense."

Keifer stopped.

Never mind.

His brothers were awake.

Keigan sat comfortably at the table looking far too pleased with himself.

Across from him, twelve-year-old Keiran looked seconds away from declaring war.

"My pancake."

"Our pancake."

"My pancake."

"Our pancake."

Keifer sighed.

"Good morning."

"Kuya!"

Keiran immediately pointed at his older brother.

"He stole my breakfast."

Keigan looked innocent.

Which meant he was guilty.

"I don't know what he's talking about."

"You're literally eating it."

"Allegedly."

Keifer rubbed his forehead.

Sometimes he wondered if he was raising children.

Then he remembered they weren't his children.

Then he wondered again.

For the next fifteen minutes, breakfast continued with the usual chaos.

Keiran complained.

Keigan teased him.

Keifer played referee.

Eventually, all three managed to survive.

Barely.

After breakfast, Keifer drove them to school.

The ride was filled with arguments.

Mostly from Keiran.

"Kuya."

"What?"

"If somebody annoys me today, can I punch them?"

"No."

"What if they deserve it?"

"Still no."

"What if—"

"No."

Keigan laughed from the backseat.

Keiran looked betrayed.

"You never support my dreams."

"I support your survival."

"Same thing."

"It really isn't."

When they finally arrived, Keiran unbuckled his seatbelt dramatically.

"I'll remember this betrayal."

"See you later."

"Maybe."

Then he jumped out of the car.

Keigan followed shortly after.

Before closing the door, he glanced back.

"Drive safe."

Keifer smiled.

"Go to class."

"That's less emotional."

"Go."

Keigan laughed and left.

For a moment, Keifer watched them disappear through the school gates.

A small smile remained on his face.

Then he started the engine.

And drove toward HVIS.

Unaware that before the day ended—

His attention would be focused on someone else entirely.

Yuri.

.....

Yuri's POV

Unlike most people his age, Yuri hadn't slept well.

In fact, he wasn't sure if he had slept at all.

The digital clock beside his bed read 5:42 AM.

His eyes were already open.

Staring at the ceiling.

Waiting.

For what?

He didn't know anymore.

Maybe another message.

Maybe another threat.

Maybe another reminder that his life no longer belonged entirely to him.

The thought alone made his chest tighten.

Slowly, he sat up and reached for his phone.

Nothing.

No messages.

No calls.

No notifications.

For a moment, relief washed over him.

A brief moment.

A fragile one.

Then his screen lit up.

Unknown Number.

Yuri froze.

His heartbeat immediately sped up.

He opened the message.

Only three words.

Be ready today.

That's all.

No explanation.

No details.

Nothing.

Yet somehow those three words were enough to make his stomach drop.

He knew exactly who had sent it.

Kaizer.

Yuri quickly locked his phone.

His hands trembling slightly.

He hated this.

He hated feeling afraid every time his phone vibrated.

He hated feeling watched.

Most of all—

He hated lying to the people he cared about.

A knock suddenly sounded on his door.

"Yuri?"

His mother's voice.

Immediately, he forced his expression to relax.

"Coming."

A few minutes later, he walked into the kitchen.

His mother was preparing breakfast.

His younger sister sat at the table doing homework.

The sight instantly softened something inside him.

This.

This was why he was enduring everything.

This was why he kept obeying.

Not for himself.

For them.

His sister looked up and smiled brightly.

"Kuya."

Yuri smiled back.

A real smile.

One of the few he still had left.

"Morning."

"You're late."

"It's six in the morning."

"Still late."

Yuri laughed quietly.

For a few precious minutes, things felt normal.

His mother talked about work.

His sister complained about school.

The conversation was ordinary.

Simple.

Safe.

Exactly the kind of morning he wished could last forever.

But it couldn't.

Because reality always returned.

It always did.

As he stood to leave, his mother gently fixed his collar.

The same way she had done since he was a child.

"Take care of yourself."

Yuri swallowed.

"I will."

His mother smiled.

His sister hugged him before running back to her homework.

And suddenly—

The fear returned.

Because all he could think was:

What if something happens to them?

The thought followed him all the way to school.

Jay's POV

By the time Jay arrived at HVIS, the campus was already crowded.

Students filled the hallways.

Teachers rushed between classrooms.

The usual morning madness.

She had barely stepped through the gate when somebody grabbed her wrist.

"Hi."

Jay didn't even need to look.

"Hello, boyfriend."

Keifer smiled.

"Good morning to you too."

"You look rich today."

"I always look rich."

"Fair point."

For a moment they simply walked together.

Comfortable.

Easy.

The kind of silence that only existed between people who knew each other well.

Keifer glanced down at her.

"You seem happy."

"I stole Aries's toast."

"Ah."

"Victory tastes delicious."

"I'll pray for him."

"You should."

Keifer chuckled.

For the first time that morning, some of the tension in his shoulders disappeared.

Jay had a way of doing that.

Making difficult things feel lighter.

Making problems seem smaller.

Unfortunately, the feeling didn't last.

Because the moment they entered the classroom—

Keifer noticed Yuri.

Again.

And the uneasy feeling returned.

Yuri was already seated.

Already quiet.

Already staring out the window.

As if he hadn't slept.

As if he hadn't rested in weeks.

Jay followed his gaze.

"He's been weird lately."

Keifer looked at her.

"So you noticed too."

"Kind of hard not to."

Neither of them said anything after that.

But the concern remained.

Growing.

Slowly.

Like a crack spreading through glass.

Neither of them realized it yet.

But today was the beginning.

The beginning of questions.

The beginning of doubt.

The beginning of a secret that would eventually change everything.

And Yuri—

Sat in his seat pretending everything was fine.

Even though his entire world was falling apart.

...

The first period had barely started when Section E proved once again why most teachers considered them a headache.

Sir alvin had been explaining a lesson for less than ten minutes when a crumpled piece of paper suddenly flew across the classroom and hit Blaster directly on the forehead.

The entire class went silent.

Blaster slowly picked up the paper.

Looked at it.

Then looked across the room.

"Ci-N."

Ci-N gasped dramatically.

"You accuse me without evidence?"

"You drew a stickman on this."

"So?"

"The stickman has your face."

"That's called self-expression."

A few students burst into laughter.

Even Jay couldn't stop herself from smirking.

Sir alvin closed his eyes.

Took a deep breath.

And immediately regretted becoming a teacher.

Meanwhile, Yuri sat near the window.

Pretending to listen.

Pretending everything was normal.

Pretending he wasn't constantly checking the time.

Every minute felt longer than it should.

Every vibration from his phone made his chest tighten.

He knew another message would come.

It always came.

The waiting was almost worse than the threats.

Because at least threats ended.

The waiting never did.

"Yuri."

He blinked.

His attention snapped back to reality.

Sir was staring at him.

The entire class was staring at him.

"Would you like to answer the question?"

Yuri froze.

"What question?"

The classroom immediately exploded with laughter.

Sir alvin sighed.

"Exactly."

Normally, Yuri would've made a joke.

Normally, he would've found a way to turn the situation around.

Today, he simply lowered his head.

"Sorry, sir."

The teacher studied him for a moment.

Something in his expression softened.

"Pay attention."

"Yes, sir."

Keifer noticed that too.

Yuri never apologized that quickly.

Never.

The realization sat uncomfortably in the back of his mind for the rest of the lesson.

When the bell finally rang, the classroom instantly came alive.

Students stood.

Conversations started.

Chaos returned.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, Yuri quietly slipped outside.

Keifer watched him leave.

For a brief moment, he considered following.

Instead, he remained where he was.

Maybe he was overthinking.

Maybe there was a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Maybe—

"You're staring."

Jay suddenly appeared beside him.

Keifer glanced at her.

"What?"

"You're staring at Yuri."

"No, I'm not."

"You absolutely are."

Keifer sighed.

Jay crossed her arms.

"You noticed too."

It wasn't a question.

It was a statement.

Because she had noticed.

Of course she had.

Jay noticed everything.

The things people said.

The things people didn't say.

The little details others ignored.

And lately—

Yuri had become one giant walking detail.

"Something's wrong."

Keifer finally admitted.

Jay looked toward the door Yuri had disappeared through.

Her expression grew thoughtful.

"I know."

The answer surprised him.

"You do?"

"I just don't know what."

Neither of them spoke after that.

Because neither of them had answers.

Only questions.

And questions were dangerous.

Especially when they involved people you cared about.

The rest of the morning passed slowly.

Or at least it felt slow.

Mostly because Section E refused to behave.

Ci-N somehow convinced Blaster that the vending machine hated him personally.

Blaster spent fifteen minutes trying to prove him wrong.

Drew continued his mission to borrow money from every living creature within a five-kilometer radius.

Including teachers.

Including the janitor.

Including a delivery driver.

David slept through two lectures and somehow still answered a question correctly.

Nobody knew how.

Not even David.

Josh remained quiet as always.

Watching.

Observing.

Listening.

While everyone else talked.

Josh noticed things.

And lately—

He had been noticing Yuri.

At lunch, Section E gathered around their usual table.

The cafeteria buzzed with noise.

Students filled nearly every seat.

Conversations overlapped.

Trays clattered.

Laughter echoed.

Yet somehow Section E remained the loudest group in the building.

"Who ate my fries?"

Blaster looked personally offended.

Ci-N pointed at Drew.

Drew pointed at David.

David pointed at Josh.

Josh continued eating.

Completely unbothered.

The chain of accusations immediately ended.

"See?"

Ci-N declared dramatically.

"It was Josh."

Josh didn't even look up.

"Prove it."

"I can't."

"Then stop talking."

"Rude."

"Accurate."

Jay laughed.

Keifer shook his head.

For a moment—

Everything felt normal.

Comfortable.

Familiar.

Like every other lunch they had shared over the years.

Like every other day.

Like nothing had changed.

Then Yuri's phone vibrated.

A tiny sound.

Almost impossible to hear.

Yet Yuri reacted immediately.

His entire body stiffened.

His hand moved toward his pocket.

His breathing changed.

And just like that—

The normal moment disappeared.

Keifer saw it.

Jay saw it.

Josh saw it.

This time, even David noticed.

Yuri quickly looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

Only for a second.

Then he locked the phone and shoved it back into his pocket.

Too fast.

Way too fast.

Nobody said anything.

But the table had gone noticeably quieter.

"Everything okay?"

Keifer asked casually.

Yuri looked up.

For a moment—

A thousand emotions flashed through his eyes.

Fear.

Stress.

Guilt.

Exhaustion.

Then they disappeared.

Replaced by a smile.

A fake one.

"Yeah."

The answer came too quickly.

Too easily.

Too rehearsed.

Nobody challenged it.

Not because they believed him.

But because they respected him.

If Yuri wanted to talk—

He would.

At least that's what they thought.

The truth was far more complicated.

Because Yuri desperately wanted to tell them.

Every day.

Every hour.

Every second.

He wanted to tell Keifer.

Wanted to tell Jay.

Wanted to tell somebody.

Anybody.

But every time he imagined doing it—

He saw his mother's face.

His sister's smile.

And then Kaizer's threats.

The choice became impossible.

So he stayed silent.

And the silence continued growing heavier.

Little by little.

Day by day.

Until eventually—

It would become too heavy to carry alone.

...

The afternoon bell rang, signaling the end of another class.

Students immediately poured into the hallways.

Some headed toward the cafeteria.

Others rushed to clubs.

A few simply wanted to escape their classrooms as quickly as possible.

Jay was one of them.

She had barely taken three steps outside the classroom when someone grabbed her wrist.

Before she could react, she was pulled around a corner.

"Keif—"

"Shh."

Jay narrowed her eyes.

"Did you just shush me?"

"No."

"You literally did."

"Details."

Jay crossed her arms.

"Where are we going?"

"You'll see."

"That's exactly what kidnappers say."

Keifer laughed.

A few minutes later, they stopped in front of an old music room that had been unused for years.

Jay immediately raised an eyebrow.

"The music room?"

"It has memories."

"Most of them involve Ci-N getting kicked out."

"True."

Keifer opened the door and let her inside.

Dust floated through the sunlight streaming from the windows.

An old piano sat in one corner.

Several chairs were stacked against the wall.

The room was quiet.

Far away from the noise of the campus.

Far away from everyone else.

Jay turned toward him.

"Okay."

"What?"

"What do you want?"

Keifer stared at her.

"You."

Jay blinked.

Then immediately looked away.

"That's disgusting."

"You love me."

"Unfortunately."

"See?"

"I didn't say that."

"You basically did."

Jay rolled her eyes.

A smile tugged at the corner of her lips.

Keifer noticed.

Of course he noticed.

He always did.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence wasn't awkward.

It never was.

Not with them.

Then Keifer stepped closer.

And closer.

And closer.

Until Jay had to tilt her head slightly to look at him.

"What?"

She tried to sound annoyed.

Failed miserably.

Keifer folded his arms.

"I have a complaint."

"A complaint?"

"Yes."

"Should I call customer service?"

"I'm serious."

Jay laughed.

"Okay, Watson. What's your complaint?"

Keifer looked genuinely offended.

"You've been ignoring me."

Jay stared at him.

Then laughed harder.

"I have not."

"You absolutely have."

"I literally saw you this morning."

"You saw me."

"Yes."

"You greeted me."

"Yes."

"You insulted me."

"As I always do."

"Exactly."

Keifer pointed dramatically.

"You didn't spend enough time with me."

Jay looked at him like he had lost his mind.

"You're impossible."

"I know."

"You sound like a child."

"I miss my girlfriend."

"You saw me three hours ago."

"Longest three hours of my life."

Jay groaned.

"You're so dramatic."

"You're avoiding the issue."

"There is no issue."

"There is."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

Jay opened her mouth to argue again.

Only for Keifer to gently cup her cheek.

The words disappeared immediately.

Her heart betrayed her.

Again.

The idiot smiled.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

"See?"

"I hate you."

"No, you don't."

A soft kiss landed on her lips .

Jay froze but melted into the kiss anyways.

Keifer chuckled.

"Cute."

"Don't."

"Very cute."

"Keifer."

"Yes?"

"I'm trying to be annoyed."

"You're failing."

"Shut up."

His grin widened.

For a few moments, the weight of the day seemed to disappear.

No investigations.

No secrets.

No tension.

No Kaizer.

Just them.

Just Jay and Keifer.

The way things used to be.

The way both of them wished they could stay.

Keifer rested his forehead against hers.

"You okay?"

The teasing disappeared from his voice.

Just concern remained.

Jay blinked.

"You noticed?"

"I always notice."

For a second, she hesitated.

Then sighed.

"I don't know."

"About?"

She looked away.

"Something feels wrong."

Keifer's expression softened.

Because he understood exactly what she meant.

He felt it too.

That strange feeling.

That uneasy sensation that something was coming.

Neither of them knew what.

Only that it existed.

Waiting.

Watching.

Slowly moving closer.

Keifer squeezed her hand gently.

"Whatever it is."

Jay looked at him.

"We'll handle it."

The confidence in his voice made her smile.

A real smile.

One that reached her eyes.

"Together?"

Keifer smiled back.

"Together."

Outside the old music room, the school continued as normal.

Students laughed.

Teachers taught.

The world kept moving.

Unaware that a storm was already approaching.

And when it finally arrived—

It would test every promise they had ever made.
