Chapter 81
The Call She Couldn't Ignore
Jay's POV
The moment I stepped inside the car, I knew something was wrong.
Aurora never called three times in a row.
Not unless something was burning.
Figuratively.
Hopefully.
I leaned back against the leather seat and finally called her.
The phone barely rang once.
Aurora answered immediately.
"About time."
I rolled my eyes.
"Hello to you too."
"Don't start."
That got my attention.
Aurora rarely sounded serious.
Annoying?
Always.
Dramatic?
Constantly.
Serious?
Rarely.
I sat up straighter.
"What happened?"
The line went quiet for a moment.
Then Aurora sighed.
"Jay."
The way she said my name made my stomach twist.
"What happened?"
Aurora didn't answer immediately.
Instead she asked:
"Where are you?"
"In the car."
"Alone?"
"Yes."
Another pause.
Then—
"It's about Kaizer Watson."
My grip tightened around my phone.
Kaizer Watson.
Keifer's father.
The man Keifer hated more than anyone.
The man whose name alone could ruin his mood.
The man Keifer never talked about unless he absolutely had to.
I frowned.
"What about him?"
Aurora's voice lowered.
"He's moving."
The air inside the car suddenly felt heavier.
"What do you mean moving?"
"I mean exactly what I said."
My expression hardened.
Aurora continued.
"Our people have been watching him for months."
That wasn't surprising.
Justice Veil kept eyes on a lot of powerful people.
Especially dangerous ones.
"And?"
Aurora exhaled slowly.
"And whatever he's planning..."
Another pause.
"It's big."
I stared out the tinted window.
Traffic moved around us.
People walked along sidewalks.
The world continued normally.
Meanwhile my instincts were screaming.
"How big?"
"We don't know yet."
Not knowing was worse.
Much worse.
Because Aurora hated uncertainty.
If she was calling me over uncertainty...
Then it was serious.
"Who told you?"
"Sebastian."
That made me freeze.
Sebastian never panicked.
Never overreacted.
Never called meetings without evidence.
If Sebastian was involved...
Then this wasn't a rumor.
This was real.
I closed my eyes briefly.
"What else?"
Aurora became quiet.
Too quiet.
Then she said something I wasn't expecting.
"We think he has backing."
My eyes snapped open.
"What?"
"We don't know who."
The words hit harder than I expected.
Kaizer Watson was already powerful.
Already wealthy.
Already influential.
If somebody else was backing him...
That changed everything.
"How sure are you?"
Aurora didn't hesitate.
"Ninety percent."
Damn.
That wasn't speculation.
That was practically confirmation.
I rubbed my temple.
A headache was already forming.
"When did this start?"
"Recently."
"Does Keifer know?"
The silence that followed answered the question before Aurora did.
"No."
Of course he didn't.
Because if Keifer knew, the entire country would probably know.
The man had many talents.
Being subtle wasn't one of them.
I looked out the window again.
Thinking.
Connecting pieces.
Trying to understand where this fit.
Something wasn't right.
Something felt off.
Aurora seemed to read my thoughts.
"You're thinking too much."
"I always think too much."
"True."
"Thanks."
"You're welcome."
I hated her.
Not really.
But still.
Then her tone softened.
Just slightly.
"Jay."
"What?"
"Be careful."
That made me pause.
Aurora wasn't warning Justice Veil.
She wasn't warning J & Elvara.
She was warning me.
Personally.
Which meant she was worried.
And that almost never happened.
"I'll be fine."
"Liar."
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
I rolled my eyes.
The audacity.
Spending years together apparently gave people permission to insult me.
"Sebastian said the same thing."
"See?"
"That's not helping."
"It wasn't supposed to."
I groaned.
Aurora laughed softly.
Finally sounding like herself again.
"Meeting tomorrow."
"Do I have a choice?"
"No."
"Thought so."
The call ended shortly afterward.
But the feeling remained.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Like a storm gathering somewhere beyond the horizon.
I stared at my dark phone screen.
Then at my reflection.
Keifer had no idea.
No idea his father's name had just become part of a Justice Veil discussion.
No idea people were investigating Kaizer.
No idea something bigger might be happening behind the scenes.
And for now...
I intended to keep it that way.
---
Meanwhile, several streets away, Keifer stood outside his house.
His phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown Number.
His eyes narrowed.
The message contained only a single sentence.
> Be careful who you trust. Not everyone around you is who they seem to be.
Kiefer stared at the screen.
Then scoffed.
Probably some idiot.
Probably a prank.
Yet for some reason...
His thoughts drifted toward a girl with sharp eyes, endless secrets, and a habit of making everything complicated.
Jasper Jean Mariano
The message shouldn't have reminded him of her.
And yet...
It did.
---
The most dangerous storms are not the ones you can see coming from the horizon... but the ones already gathering behind the people you love. ✨📖🌤️
