Chapter 30 - Lines That Shouldn’t Be Crossed

The rain started without warning.

One moment the island was quiet under a heavy sky—the next, wind tore through the palms and water fell in sharp, relentless sheets.

By nightfall, the storm had swallowed everything.

The lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then darkness.

Only the sound of rain remained. Loud. Surrounding. Endless.

Inside the villa, Ji-Ah stood near the window, watching lightning split the horizon over the sea. The room behind her was lit only by occasional white flashes from the sky.

She should have stayed inside.

She didn't.

Barefoot, without thinking, she stepped out onto the rain-soaked pathway outside the villa. The stone was cold beneath her feet. The rain hit her skin instantly, drenching her hair, her clothes.

She didn't move back.

She just stood there.

Breathing.

Feeling.

As if the storm outside was quieter than the one she had been holding in all day.

Behind her, the villa door opened.

She didn't turn.

She knew who it was.

Min-Ho didn't call her name.

Didn't ask what she was doing.

He simply walked out into the rain.

Stopped a few steps behind her.

Close enough to reach.Far enough to pretend he wouldn't.

Water ran down his face, his shirt clinging to his shoulders, but he didn't seem to notice.

His eyes were only on her.

Ji-Ah finally turned.

Lightning lit the sky between them.

For a second, they saw each other clearly.

No distance. No pretense. No daylight to soften the edges.

Just truth.

She held his gaze.

Too long.

And something in his expression changed.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Something far more dangerous.

Restraint… thinning.

He took one step forward.

Then stopped himself.

His jaw tightened.

Rain fell harder around them.

"If you look at me like that again," he said quietly, voice almost lost in the storm,

"I won't pretend this is simple."

The words didn't sound like a threat.

They sounded like a warning to himself.

Ji-Ah didn't speak.

Didn't step back.

But she lowered her eyes.

And that was the only thing that saved the moment.

Min-Ho exhaled slowly, running a hand through his wet hair, breaking the intensity before it crossed into something neither of them could undo.

"Go inside," he said, softer now.

This time, she listened.

She walked past him toward the villa door.

Close enough that her shoulder almost brushed his chest.

Almost.

He didn't move.

Didn't reach.

Didn't allow himself to.

She went inside.

The door closed.

Min-Ho remained in the rain long after.

Because he knew—

The line hadn't been crossed.

But it had been seen.

And that was worse.
