Chapter 16 - Chapter fifteen

The sun set behind the tall trees that bordered the village, the sky smeared with hues of orange and purple. The streets, once alive with laughter and chatter, lay quiet in the aftermath of chaos. Cade stood at the edge of the village square, the adrenaline that had once surged through him now replaced by an unsettling stillness. Blood, dark and thick, clung to his skin and clothes—a stark reminder of the violence he had unleashed.

As he examined the aftermath of the battle, Cade felt the weight of the villagers' gazes bearing down on him—some filled with gratitude, others tinged with fear. The memory of slaying the trolls hung heavily in the air, visceral and raw. He could see whispers passing between them, a mix of reverence and apprehension against a backdrop of lingering relief.

"Cade…" Lyrica's voice pulled him from his thoughts, her gentle hand resting on his arm. "You should talk to them."

"I know," he replied, his voice heavy as he scanned the faces in the crowd. "But… what will I say? How do I explain what happened? How do I make them understand?"

"You start by being honest," Lyrica encouraged softly, her eyes urging him to take the first step. "Show them that you're still the person they knew. Show them that you're still you."

Taking a deep breath, Cade nodded, steeling himself. He stepped forward, the villagers parting slightly as he approached. Murmurs filled the air, but this time, there was a question of understanding rather than outright fear. The anxious glances were tempered with a yearning for connection, for reassurances that they could still rely on him.

"Everyone," he called out, his voice steady yet tinged with vulnerability. "I know you saw things today that you shouldn't have to bear witness to. I… I am deeply sorry for the violence and horror that unfolded."

A hush fell over the crowd, broken only by the rustle of hesitant movements. Cade noticed heads nodding, expressions softening as they absorbed his words. He pressed on, the urgency in his heart pushing him forward.

"Those trolls—what I did was to protect you. I didn't want you to be harmed by them or by anything that could come from their darkness. But I understand that I unleashed something primal in myself."

A woman's voice broke through the quiet, trembling yet steady. "It was terrifying to see that side of you, Cade. But we know you fought for us. If you hadn't acted as you did, we might have faced greater horrors. Please, help us understand how we can help you."

Cade's heart swelled at her words, the gratitude mingling with the guilt that had been festering inside him. "I can promise you that I will try harder to keep my darkness at bay. To be less King Slayer and more protector. But I need your trust."

The villagers began to exchange glances, their expressions reflecting a collective decision. "Cade, we all have darkness," spoke a middle-aged man from the back. "What matters is how we fight against it. We trust you to guide us because we believe in you—in the goodness you've shown us."

"Exactly," another villager chimed in, stepping forward. "You've always stood by us. We've seen your strength and your heart. Together, we can help each other heal."

Their words wrapped around him like a warm blanket, infusing him with strength. Cade nodded, hope mixed with gratitude blooming within him. "Then let's work together. We need to clean up the village, and I'd like to ensure we find out how those trolls got here in the first place. They were never spotted this close before, which means someone or something lured them here."

There was a sense of resolve in the air, a shared determination that colored their interactions. The villagers began to disperse, organizing into groups to help clear debris and rebuild what had been damaged. Cade felt the tension shift in the atmosphere as he joined them—fear transformed into a sense of community and resilience.

As the work began, the physicality of rebuilding helped occupy Cade's mind, allowing him to process the emotional fallout. Together, they gathered the remains of the trolls, removing marks of destruction and restoring the market stalls that had been shattered.

Lyrica moved between groups, offering her healing magic to those who needed it, her presence a calming balm amidst the chaos. She approached Cade with an encouraging smile. "You see? They understand. They want to support you."

"I hope they know I won't let them down," Cade muttered, still grappling with his own sense of worth amidst the weight of expectation.

"Dad," Lyrica said, the sincerity in her voice cutting through the anxiety, "You're not alone in this. We're all healing together."

Not long after, Lyrica called out to him, gesturing toward the outskirts of the village where the forest began. "Come look at this."

Cade followed, curiosity piqued. When they reached the edge of the woods, Lyrica knelt, pointing to the ground. "Tracks. They don't look like the trolls'. They're smaller… but there are a lot of them."

Cade leaned down, inspecting the faint indentations in the earth. "You're right. These footprints are too small for the trolls, yet they seem fresh. They're not broken like the others."

"What if there's something else out there?" Lyrica said, her brow furrowing with concern. "Something that could have led the trolls to our village?"

Cade straightened, a renewed determination sparking within him. "We need to gather information from the other villagers to see if anyone has noticed anything unusual leading up to today. We can't let our guard down."

As they turned back toward the village, Cade felt a sense of purpose rekindle within him. The path of recovery would not be easy, but he had Lyrica by his side and a community willing to heal. Together, they would uncover the mystery that lay beyond the shadows, facing whatever darkness lurked in the deep woods, united in their determination to protect each other and their home.

With every step forward, Cade felt the weight of his past transform into a strength that could bridge the divide between his darker instincts and the father he wanted to be. Recovery was a journey, and while the scars of battle would leave enduring marks, it was the future—uncertain but glimmering with hope—that beckoned them onward.

As they rejoined their fellow villagers, Cade's heart swelled with determination. He knew they would tackle the brewing mystery together. He might have been shaken, but the light of his daughter and the understanding of the villagers would guide the way toward a brighter future.
