Chapter 60 - Chapter 55: The Attack on Yunkai

When Viserys left riding Ghidorah, the two Mercenaries companies also began packing their gear, ready to coordinate with Viserys's main army at any moment.

At dawn, Viserys returned to the rendezvous point agreed upon with Ser Arthur, a canyon less than thirty miles from Yunkai. The fifteen thousand soldiers led by Arthur were already camped there. The Unsullied phalanxes were neat and solemn, while the Freemen troops seemed noisy but were in high spirits.

"Your Majesty." Ser Arthur greeted him, joy apparent on his face. "You have returned safely."

"Mhm." Viserys then briefly explained what had happened. "So now Yunkai is left with less than twenty thousand Slave Soldiers and Freemen troops, while we have added four thousand combat-ready Mercenaries."

Ser Arthur couldn't help but show admiration.

After the representatives of the Second Sons Company and the Stormcrow Company arrived at the main camp, the final pre-war meeting began.

"Look here." Viserys's finger traced the outline of Yunkai on the map. "Yunkai has three main gates. The East Gate faces Slavers Bay and is the most heavily defended. The North Gate connects to the Coastal Road leading to Meereen. The South Gate leads to Astapor, which is the direction we plan to attack. I want your Mercenaries companies to split into two teams and attack the North Gate and the East Gate, respectively."

Mero frowned slightly. "Dividing our forces for attack? Your Majesty, this will scatter our strength. Besides, we Mercenaries are not good at siege warfare."

"Not a real attack," Viserys explained. "It's a Feint. Your main task is to prevent the Wise Masters of Yunkai from escaping through these two points. The main Unsullied force will launch the real attack from the South Gate."

"Ghidorah and I will provide air support. When you begin the Feint, I will first help the Unsullied destroy the Defensive Structures and Scorpion Crossbows on the southern wall, and then break open the gate directly."

With the plan set, the various units began to move.

When Viserys appeared at the Mercenaries camp, someone had already informed the Wise Masters of Yunkai. However, it wasn't until Viserys safely departed that the Wise Masters became truly restless.

In the Pyramid Council Hall of Kraznys, the Wise Master of Yunkai, twelve Wise Masters wearing luxurious Tokar Robes were engaged in a fierce argument.

"I have always said that the Mercenaries companies are the least trustworthy; they only trust gold." A Wise Master wearing a Gold Nose Ring slammed his hand on the table. "Now that Targaryen bastard has come knocking, are we going to surrender to this fellow who looks like he was born of a whore?"

"Calm down, Yazzan." Kraznys, the Wise Master, tapped the table with his hand. "Our walls are strong enough, and we have enough food and water inside. As long as we hold out until reinforcements from Meereen arrive, we can coordinate an attack from both inside and out to annihilate these rebels."

"But what about the Demon Dragon?" The voice of another, younger Wise Master trembled slightly. "The slaves who escaped from Astapor all say there is a dragon that breathes Golden Fire and burns everything to ashes."

"They were just scared witless," Kraznys said dismissively. "Even if there is a dragon, it's just a fire-breathing lizard. Our Scorpion Crossbows can pierce the thickest armor; surely they can handle a lizard with wings."

That being said, Kraznys's fingers unconsciously rubbed the Gem Ring on his hand. He had indeed heard some disturbing news, about a Three-Headed Giant Dragon, and about the land in Astapor that vanished instantly.

But none of this could be spoken in the council. What the Wise Masters needed was confidence, the belief in certain victory. Once fear spread, the city's defenses would collapse from within.

"Send down the order," Kraznys decided. "All Slave Soldiers man the walls, and the Freemen form the second line of defense. Open the Armory and distribute weapons to everyone who can hold one. Tell everyone in the city that if they can hold the city, they will each receive freedom and a bounty."

This was a huge gamble. The promise of freedom and weapons to the slaves might bring unforeseen consequences, but Kraznys believed that in the face of external threat, these people would see the situation clearly, and he thought the Wise Masters' commands were inviolable to them.

But he was wrong.

Early the next morning, outside Yunkai's South Gate.

Ser Arthur Dayne rode on his warhorse, behind him were dense phalanxes. Ten thousand Unsullied were arranged into twenty neat phalanxes of five hundred men each, their spears like a forest and their shields interlocked. Behind them were five thousand Freemen troops.

"How are things with the Mercenaries companies?" Arthur asked the Messenger beside him.

"The Stormcrow Company has sent word; the Feint was successful, and they have drawn a large number of Defenders to their section of the wall."

Just then, a Dragon Roar echoed in the sky.

All the soldiers looked up.

The morning fog dissipated, and sunlight began to spread across the land. And within that golden sunlight, a massive figure was flying in from the east.

Ghidorah's three heads shone with a metallic luster in the sunlight, and its dragon wings beat the air, stirring up a great wind. Viserys, on the dragon's back, wore Black and Red Armor and a Dragon-Winged Helmet; his exposed silver hair fluttered in the wind.

The giant dragon circled once above the Unsullied phalanxes before flying toward Yunkai's city walls.

When Ghidorah first appeared above Yunkai, the entire city descended into chaos.

"A dragon. It's a dragon."

"May The Gods protect us..."

"Archers, Scorpion Crossbows, aim!"

The Officers shouted hoarsely, trying to maintain order. The Slave Soldiers trembled as they raised their spears, while the Freemen Archers frantically began nocking arrows.

Twenty Scorpion Crossbows were pushed to the edge of the wall. These giant crossbows could shoot massive Bolts, and were specifically designed to combat War Elephants and Siege Towers. Now, their target was the Three-Headed Giant Dragon in the air.

"Fire!" The Commander gave the order.

Twenty massive Bolts whistled as they flew toward the sky. The tips of these Bolts were wrapped in iron sheets, and their tails were tied with oil-soaked rags, leaving streaks in the air.

Ghidorah's three heads turned simultaneously, and six golden Dragon Eyes locked onto the incoming Bolts. She did not dodge, but instead opened her central Dragon Mouth.

A fan-shaped golden ray erupted.

There was no fire, no explosion, only a chilling 'Annihilation.' Where the golden ray swept, the twenty Bolts instantly turned into nothingness, leaving no ashes behind. The ray continued forward, hitting several Scorpion Crossbows on the wall.

The result was the same. The massive crossbows, the operating soldiers, and even the masonry beneath their feet silently vanished in the golden ray.

A semi-circular gap with smooth edges was left on the city wall, as if an invisible giant beast had taken a bite.

Dead silence.

The Defenders on the wall stared dumbfounded at the sight. Even the bravest among them began to retreat; fear spread like a plague.

"Keep firing, don't stop!" The Officer was still shouting, but his voice was trembling.
