The air was heavy, saturated with the stench of rusted iron and ancient rot. But to Ren, it tasted like ash in his mouth.
"H… h…"
The sound of his broken breathing was the only thing audible in the deadly silence of the corridor, as if he were drowning in an ocean of black oil. His lungs burned—not from lack of oxygen, but from the terror gripping his heart with icy fingers. Cold sweat poured from his forehead, mixing with blood and dust on his face, and his body trembled with uncontrollable spasms.
This was not fear for himself. He had faced death many times before.
But this… this was different.
His eyes did something he had not consciously commanded them to do. They activated on their own. The world around him lost its colors, transforming into horrifying, transparent anatomical diagrams.
[Transparent World: Activated]
His vision pierced flesh and bone, focusing on the body of Yuji Itadori, slumped against the wall.
What he saw made him want to tear his own eyes out.
The torn arteries at the shoulder pulsed weakly, pumping the last drops of life out of the boy's body. Muscles were shredded, bones shattered, and Yuji's life aura… was fading, like a candle in a hurricane.
"No… no…"
Ren's expression shifted from shock into a mask of absolute sorrow. His lips trembled, and his emerald eyes—usually shining with confidence—were now glassy, on the brink of collapse and tears.
His gaze darted around frantically, scanning the area for any hope, anything that told him the scenario was not over yet.
He saw the stains on the far wall. There, the body of Megumi's White Divine Dog was embedded into the concrete, its bones crushed and blood staining the pure white fur. Nearby, in a deep crater, the Black Dog lay torn apart, its remains scattered brutally.
Megumi's shikigami had been killed.
He had sacrificed them.
In the far corner of the dark corridor, Ren spotted something metallic glinting faintly. Nobara's hammer, discarded carelessly on the ground.
"Megumi… Nobara…" Ren muttered hoarsely, his mind racing madly as he tried to connect the dots. "They escaped. The wolves were bait… and the hammer fell during the retreat… they survived."
That assumption was the drowning man's straw, the only thing keeping his mind from total collapse.
"Yes. This matches the original story. Megumi escapes to save Nobara, and Yuji sacrifices himself to buy time."
But—
"Kiiieh he he he!"
The laughter of the Special-Grade Curse echoed again through the corridor. A sticky, nauseating sound, dripping with mockery and pure malice. The laughter of something that did not belong to this world—something that delighted in tearing children apart.
That laugh snapped the thread of Ren's rational thoughts.
His gaze returned to Yuji. The boy who always smiled, who had a heart larger than his body, was now nothing more than a blood-soaked mass of flesh, struggling to remain conscious for one reason alone: waiting for Megumi's signal to release the monster within him.
"Why…" Ren whispered, his voice coming out like the whimper of a wounded animal.
Suddenly, he no longer saw the dark corridor.
Memories overlapped.
He saw his old room from his previous life. Scattered clothes, empty ramen cups, and the glow of his phone screen in the dark. He was watching that episode. The episode where Yuji died for the first time.
He remembered Yuji's face in the anime. The hole in his chest. And that bitter, sorrowful smile he gave Megumi before falling dead. The smile that said: Live long.
"No."
One word escaped from between his clenched teeth—sharp, decisive, like a blade.
The trembling vanished from his body. The cold sweat stopped. The sorrow evaporated, replaced by something else. Something older, darker, and far more terrifying than any curse.
"Kraaaak!"
The sound of his teeth grinding echoed from the pressure. Slowly, he raised his hand and grasped the heavy crimson necklace hanging around his neck—the necklace that served as a restraint, a prison for his true power and his vast, chaotic cursed energy.
When he lifted his head again, there were no tears.
The emerald in his eyes no longer shone with intelligence or cheer. It had transformed into glowing green pools, radiating raw killing intent so dense it made the air in the corridor tremble. A killing intent he had never dared to reveal, not even before Muzan or the Upper Moons.
Because what he felt now was not the desire to fight.
It was the desire to annihilate.
"I will kill you…"
Ren whispered, his voice deep and distorted as black cursed energy began to leak from his body like smoke.
"I will torture you… I will erase you from existence!"
[BOOOOM!]
The ground beneath his feet exploded. No one saw him move. There was no running—only disappearance. Ren became a black flash laced with demonic green lightning, crossing the distance in a fraction of a second.
The entire building shook, and thick dust filled the corridor.
When the dust cleared slightly, Ren was standing away from the danger zone, Yuji in his arms.
Yuji struggled to open his swollen eyes, his vision blurred, but he recognized the familiar face.
"R… Ren?" Yuji whispered weakly, shock written across his pale features.
Ren looked down at him. Seeing his friend in this state up close was like pouring oil onto fire. The anger he felt was not hot—it was cold, like the ice of hell.
He gently laid Yuji on the ground, away from the rubble.
"Wait here, my friend…" Ren said, his voice devoid of any human emotion, like a death sentence. "I have something simple to take care of."
Before Yuji could respond, Ren vanished again.
He appeared in the middle of the corridor, facing the Special-Grade Curse that had just emerged from the crater, searching for the prey that had disappeared.
Ren did not attack immediately.
He simply stood there. Slowly lifted his head, and stared with cold, glowing eyes directly into the curse's many distorted eyes.
A terrifying silence fell.
For the first time, the curse—that being born from fear—felt something strange crawl through its body.
It trembled.
The curse took a step back, its primal instincts screaming that the being standing before it was not human… but something far more dangerous.
"Are you afraid?"
No one saw Ren's lips move, but the voice echoed throughout the space.
[Sun Breathing + Cursed Energy Reinforcement: Dragon Flash!]
Ren vanished from the curse's sight. It was not speed—it was displacement. He appeared directly behind it.
"BOOF!"
One punch.
Just one punch, yet it carried the scorching blaze of the sun and densely compressed cursed energy. Ren's fist pierced through the curse's back and burst out from its chest, leaving a massive hole the size of a basketball.
Purple blood and chunks of flesh sprayed everywhere.
There was no satisfaction on Ren's face. Pain tore through his body; using Sun Breathing with cursed energy made his blood boil, veins bulging as if they would explode—but he did not care. Pain was fuel.
He violently pulled his arm back, making the curse scream and collapse to its knees.
The hole in its chest began to regenerate at a grotesque speed, flesh knitting itself together.
"You regenerate?" Ren said coldly, looking down at it. "Good. That means I can kill you more than once."
"BAAAM!"
A crushing kick slammed down on the curse's back like a hammer, burying its face into the shattered concrete floor.
Ren straddled the curse's back and grabbed its long, twisted arms. A grin formed on his face—no, not a grin. A manic, demonic snarl reflecting a sadistic desire for destruction.
"You won't be needing these anymore."
He planted his foot on its back to pin it down—and pulled.
The sound of tearing flesh, cracking bones, and the curse's screams—turning into desperate wails for mercy—filled the corridor. Ren did not stop. He increased the flow of cursed energy into his arms.
"KRAAASH!"
The curse's arms were ripped from its body in a fountain of black blood. Ren tossed the severed limbs aside like trash.
The curse, once an embodiment of absolute terror, now crawled across the ground like a pathetic worm, trying to escape this monster.
Ren stood and extended his right hand into the empty air beside him.
"System Storage: Summon."
The air split open, and the hilt of a massive sword appeared.
Ren's hand closed around it, pulling the weapon from the void.
It was no ordinary sword.
It was the Demonic Blade Igris.
A greatsword so massive and heavy it resembled a giant iron cross. Its metal was a dark crimson red, pulsing like a living heart and radiating a terrifying bloody aura. The blade seemed to devour the light around it, starving for blood.
"That sword…" Rina thought as she floated in her ghostly form, watching silently, a rare concern on her face. "He obtained it from the secret reward. It's a legendary-grade cursed weapon, but it feeds on the user's darkness. With Ren's current mental state… this is dangerous."
Ren felt the cold metal in his hand, felt the blade's dark whispers seeping into his mind, urging him toward more violence, more blood.
He did not resist.
He welcomed them.
[Sun Breathing: Modified Thirteenth Form – Guillotine of Hell]
Ren took a deep breath, exhaling real flames that mixed with the black steam of his cursed energy.
He vanished and appeared before the crawling curse.
He raised the massive sword overhead with ease, as if it weighed nothing.
"Goodbye, trash."
The blade came down.
It was not a cut—it was a smash. The crimson blade tore through the air with a horrific sound and slammed into the curse.
"SHOOOOOM!"
The curse's body, the ground beneath it, and even the surrounding walls split in half along a glowing red line.
The curse's scream vanished into nothingness.
Ren stood amid the destruction, the massive sword embedded in the ground, steam rising from his body. The blade vanished suddenly back into storage, leaving Ren facing the remains of the curse that were desperately trying to regenerate one last time.
He raised his open palm toward the remains.
Dense, black cursed energy gathered in his hand, compressing and spinning until it became a small sphere of pure destruction.
"Disappear."
He released it.
"BOOOOOOM!"
A wave of cursed energy exploded like a demonic hurricane, swallowing everything in its path—the prison walls, the curse's remains, even the darkness itself. Everything was erased.
When the storm subsided, nothing remained. No curse. Not even dust. Just a massive crater and absolute silence.
Ren exhaled slowly, releasing the last of the hot air in his lungs. The green glow in his eyes faded, his aura calming—but the anger still boiled beneath the surface.
He slowly turned toward where he had left Yuji.
Yuji was still lying there, staring at Ren with wide eyes, a mix of awe and disbelief.
Ren walked toward him, his expression complex. There was no victory. No joy in survival. There was only… hesitation.
"And now…" Ren thought bitterly as he looked at his injured friend, fully aware of what came next.
"I have to face the King of Curses."
Ren looked at Yuji, his face filled with reluctance and readiness for the worst.
