Chapter 541 - [541] The Forbidden Forest Ambush

"The best approach is for us to proceed in pairs, maintaining two-minute intervals between entries, then immediately vacate the entrance area," one Kunlun student proposed tactically. "Even if Hogwarts attempts an ambush at the bottleneck, at least we won't be completely wiped out in a single coordinated strike."

The other Eastern practitioners nodded approvingly. It was fundamentally sound strategy.

Erwin observed from his vantage point, nodding to himself with satisfaction. Sunny Finch's tactical mind remains sharp as ever. Entering separately represented the safest possible option given the circumstances.

While this defensive approach sacrificed the fifteen-minute head start advantage they currently held over both Beauxbatons and Durmstrang delegations, the reality was that East and Hogwarts represented the only genuine rivals in this competition. The other two schools simply didn't factor into serious strategic calculations. Preventing total elimination took absolute priority over maintaining temporal advantages.

Time passed with agonizing slowness as the minutes ticked steadily away. Finally, the crucial fifteen-minute mark elapsed.

At the primary entrance to the Forbidden Forest, the Hogwarts participants had efficiently regrouped to inventory and assess their acquired equipment.

"I successfully located an item keyed to the Shield Charm!" Cedric Diggory announced, holding up a small shield-shaped metallic model etched with intricate, mysterious runic patterns.

"I also discovered a defensive artifact," Charlotte added smoothly, producing an elaborately carved wooden array plate from her robes.

Every eye turned expectantly toward Penelope Clearwater. She held up what appeared to be a miniature wand model with obvious satisfaction.

"Looks like fortune favored me specifically," Penelope declared with barely concealed excitement. "I acquired the Stunning ability modifier!"

"That represents only one offensive capability item," Charlotte observed analytically, her tactical mind already calculating implications. "We can only effectively target a single opponent initially, and the Stunning effect won't achieve permanent elimination. Still, temporarily incapacitating an opponent represents significant tactical gain. It provides crucial time to search for additional resources and systematically build our strategic advantage."

Barton Durkheim asked the obvious question. "Should we specifically target Sunny Finch? She's unquestionably their strongest combatant."

Charlotte shook her head decisively. "Negative. While neutralizing her would appear cost-effective from a pure power perspective, she's their strongest practitioner for legitimate reasons. Directly attacking her carries excessive risk—she almost certainly possesses unknown trump cards and contingencies we haven't accounted for. We should instead target someone occupying the middle capability tier."

Everyone nodded understanding. The Eastern delegation remained far too mysterious and unpredictable to risk confronting their acknowledged ace directly without overwhelming advantage.

Outside the forest perimeter, the assembled Kunlun team prepared for their staggered entry. Sunny Finch signaled toward a younger boy standing somewhat nervously nearby.

"Liam Liu, you're accompanying me on the initial entry."

"Yes, Senior Sunny!" Liam Liu responded with obvious determination despite his anxiety.

Liam Liu objectively represented the weakest contestant among their delegation. Another student immediately protested the pairing with obvious concern.

"Senior, isn't this approach excessively risky? If you're successfully ambushed and eliminated, we lose our primary asset."

Sunny scoffed dismissively. "Our magical abilities and physical strength are uniformly sealed across all participants. We begin on completely equal footing regardless of prior experience. Besides," she added with a knowing smirk, "who here doesn't possess at least one hidden trump card?"

She glanced triumphantly toward where she knew Erwin was observing, as though deliberately showing off her tactical reasoning.

Erwin merely chuckled quietly at the display. He knew with absolute certainty that Sunny Finch, Charlotte, and even Viktor Krum all possessed concealed tools and advantages. True survivors always maintain hidden resources.

Their specific tricks and preparations didn't particularly concern him—he was here to observe strategy and execution, not micromanage individual loadouts.

Sunny Finch led Liam Liu confidently into the shadowed depths of the Forbidden Forest.

Inside the treeline, Charlotte's expression tightened with sudden concern. "Just two of them entering? That's unexpected."

Penelope whispered urgently, "Something feels wrong about this pattern."

Charlotte's lips curved into an appreciative smile. "Interesting tactical adaptation. Sunny Finch correctly deduced we'd attempt an entrance ambush. She's deliberately splitting their forces to minimize potential losses."

"That's genuinely terrifying," Penelope murmured with grudging respect. "That level of tactical cunning and risk assessment."

"Engaging in psychological warfare and complex tactical maneuvering represents precisely what Eastern practitioners excel at traditionally," Charlotte observed calmly. "Let her proceed unmolested. We won't engage this particular pair."

After successfully entering the forest, Sunny Finch paused deliberately, scanning the surrounding trees with obvious suspicion.

"Charlotte, aren't you going to make your move?" she called out clearly to the apparently empty forest. "I know you're positioned nearby somewhere. If you're not going to attack, I'm proceeding deeper!"

Only profound silence answered her challenge.

Sunny frowned with genuine uncertainty. Not here at all? Or simply waiting for a more opportune moment to strike?

"Senior," Liam asked nervously, clearly unsettled by the eerie quiet, "did we perhaps guess incorrectly about their strategy?"

"Possibly. Whatever the truth, let's continue moving."

They proceeded cautiously deeper into the forest. Shortly afterward, the next pair of Kunlun students entered through the same entrance. They observed no signs whatsoever of recent combat or confrontation.

"It appears Senior Sunny was perhaps overly cautious in her assessment," one student remarked with visible relief. "Let's accelerate our pace and catch up with the advance group."

Hidden in their concealed positions, Cedric asked the obvious question. "Should we attack this pair now while we have clear advantage?"

Charlotte shook her head, leaning casually against a massive tree trunk. "Negative. We'll target the final entry group specifically. That tactical approach ensures we won't risk accidentally running into the earlier groups during our withdrawal. We'll catch the last pair in a completely unguarded moment when they assume the danger has passed."

The remaining Kunlun students continued trickling steadily into the forest over the following minutes. The established pattern repeated itself without variation. Finally, the last designated pair crossed the threshold.

Charlotte whispered with cold precision, "Prepare to execute the attack!"

Penelope smoothly tapped her modified wand against her palm. A concentrated stunning spell shot forth, striking one completely unsuspecting Kunlun student squarely in the center of his chest.

He crumpled to the forest floor instantly, rendered unconscious before his body even struck the thick carpet of fallen leaves.

"Retreat immediately!" Charlotte commanded with absolute authority.

The Hogwarts students bolted into the shadowed distance without the slightest hesitation, executing their planned withdrawal with practiced efficiency.

They hadn't proceeded far into their escape route when a sharp, commanding shout suddenly rang out from the concealing shadows ahead.

"Charlotte! I've been waiting specifically for you!"
