Chapter 78 - Chapter 78: The Two-Thousand

Lucius

The recruitment finale launched January 1st, 2015.

One hundred teams—doubled from previous deployments—fanned across every unmapped territory that remained. Siberian Russia, Central African interior, Pacific islands, remote South American tribes. Every location that might harbor vampires who hadn't yet encountered alliance outreach.

Eve had allocated unlimited resources.

Synthetic blood in quantities that previous offers hadn't matched. Financial incentives that exceeded anything we'd provided before—ten thousand euros joining bonus plus housing assistance for relocation. Military protection guarantees backed by Hybrid Squads stationed across global network.

The results exceeded even optimistic projections.

January brought forty-seven new members. February added fifty-three. March contributed sixty-one. April reached sixty-four. By May 15th, the counter that Tanis maintained in the intelligence center reached a number I'd never expected to witness.

[ ALLIANCE MEMBERSHIP: 2,000 ]

The two-thousandth member was Elder Tomás of Cuba—ninety-four BP, one hundred fifty years old, survivor of revolutions and embargoes that had isolated Caribbean vampires for generations.

His induction ceremony took place via video conference, twenty-three cities watching simultaneously as a vampire from an island the United States had blockaded for half a century became symbol of unity that transcended political boundaries.

"I've watched your alliance grow from news reports and rumors," Tomás said during his acceptance speech. "Watched you build something that seemed impossible—vampires cooperating across cultures that spent centuries fighting. When your recruiters arrived in Havana, I didn't believe them. But the synthetic blood was real. The protection guarantees were real. And the vision..." He paused, emotion visible despite his century of experience hiding it. "The vision of immortals united was too beautiful to reject."

[ ALLIANCE: 2,000 MEMBERS ]

[ TARGET: ACHIEVED ]

Eve's expression as the milestone registered combined triumph with something more complex—recognition that achievement was beginning rather than ending.

"We're no longer minority," she announced to the watching assembly. "Two thousand of approximately three thousand global immortals. Sixty-seven percent majority. The alliance represents immortal species now."

The treaty completion followed in the next six weeks.

Russia signed in January—complex negotiations that required addressing Kremlin concerns about supernatural beings operating within Russian territory. Putin's government ultimately accepted pragmatic framework that provided monitoring capabilities in exchange for legal recognition.

Turkey signed in March, bridging European and Asian treaty structures. Pakistan followed in May—challenging negotiations that required careful cultural assurances about religious compatibility.

Australia completed the framework in June—enthusiastic signature from a nation with minimal vampire population but strong commitment to treaty principles.

[ TREATY NATIONS: 51 ]

[ TARGET: EXCEEDED ]

[ COVERAGE: 72% GLOBAL HUMAN POPULATION ]

The Global Immortal Assembly convened June 21st, 2015.

Summer solstice. The longest day of the year. The date Eve had chosen for its symbolic significance—immortals gathering in maximum sunlight, demonstrating UV immunity that Viktor's generation had never possessed.

Ördögház 2.0's great hall couldn't hold all two thousand thirteen members who'd joined by that date—the final week's recruitment had added thirteen more beyond the original milestone. Instead, two hundred delegates represented the global membership, joined by all eight Elder Council members and fifty human diplomats from the fifty-one treaty nations.

I delivered the keynote address from the platform where I'd announced Viktor's death eleven years earlier.

"Eleven and a half years ago, I killed Viktor—tyrant who ruled supernatural Europe through fear for over a thousand years. Sixty-one vampires survived that night, scattered and afraid, uncertain whether liberation meant freedom or simply different form of destruction."

The hall was silent. Two hundred supernatural delegates, fifty human diplomats, eight Elders—all focused on words that summarized a journey most of them had only partially witnessed.

"Today: two thousand thirteen immortals united peacefully across four continents. Fifty-one nations recognizing our legal rights, protecting our existence, integrating our capabilities into human civilization. A next generation raised in peace, educated for partnership, prepared to build on foundations we've established."

I let the magnitude of that transformation settle.

"Viktor's legacy is dust. His tyranny, his secrets, his thousand-year reign of terror—forgotten except as cautionary tale. What remains is what we chose to build instead. Not empire. Not domination. Partnership that respects difference while providing collective strength."

Eve followed my address with her own—ten years old chronologically, but speaking with authority that exceeded most beings centuries her senior.

"I'm ten years old by the calendar humans use. But I've watched this alliance grow from sixty-one desperate survivors to two thousand thirteen united citizens. I've seen impossible become inevitable through patient work and unwavering vision."

She moved to the hall's center, surrounded by delegates representing every continent, every tradition, every variation of immortal existence that had ever emerged.

"My generation will see ten thousand members. Twenty thousand. We'll expand what our parents built until every immortal who wants community has access to it. Until every government that claims authority over supernatural beings does so through partnership rather than persecution."

Her voice carried conviction that made the ambitious projections seem inevitable rather than aspirational.

"We're not hiding anymore. We're citizens, contributors, partners with humanity. The future is ours to build."

The assembly concluded with ceremonial signing of the Pact of Eternal Coexistence—symbolic document that reinforced commitment to principles the treaty had established.

Two hundred delegates adding signatures to parchment that Tanis would preserve in archives that had survived centuries of conflict. Fifty human diplomats witnessing the ceremony, their presence demonstrating that partnership extended beyond immortal boundaries.

I found a moment of quiet on the rooftop afterward.

Budapest spread below, the city that had witnessed my awakening, my transformation, my rise from confused fledgling to Elder of global alliance. The sun was setting, painting the sky in colors that my enhanced vision perceived with impossible clarity.

Eve found me there, as she often did during reflective moments.

"Papa, we did it. Two thousand thirteen members, fifty-one nations. Your dream realized."

"Your dream. I dreamed of survival—avoiding the Purge that meta-knowledge warned me was coming. You dreamed of unity that exceeded anything I'd imagined."

"You gave me foundation to dream on." She joined me at the rooftop's edge, watching the sunset together. "Without Viktor's death, without the alliance you built, without the treaty you negotiated—none of this would exist."

"And without your vision, we'd have stopped at six hundred members, content with regional power instead of global civilization."

Selene appeared behind us, completing the family that had been built through circumstances neither of us could have predicted.

"What now?" she asked. "Goals achieved, peace stable. We've won."

"Now we maintain," I answered. "Peace is harder than war—requires constant vigilance, adaptation, renewal. The next decade determines whether this lasts for centuries or collapses within our lifetimes."

Eve nodded, wisdom that exceeded her chronological age evident in her expression.

"2015 to 2025: consolidation period. Strengthen what we have before expanding further. Build institutions that function without any individual Elder's involvement. Create succession plans that ensure leadership continues regardless of who holds power."

"And after consolidation?"

"Maybe ten thousand members by 2035. One hundred nations. But slowly—sustainable growth, not explosive expansion. We've proven we can build quickly. Now we prove we can maintain what we've built."

The measured ambition represented evolution from the aggressive expansion that had characterized her leadership since achieving Eldership. She was becoming statesman rather than conqueror—exactly the transformation that sustainable power required.

I put my arms around both of them—wife and daughter, family that had emerged from violence and manipulation to become something genuine.

"Twelve years ago, I woke up in a Budapest alley with nothing but hunger and confusion. No plan, no allies, no understanding of what I'd become." The memory felt distant now, like story someone else had lived. "Now I have this. Family. Alliance. Legacy that will outlast any individual lifetime."

"You built it," Selene said.

"We built it. All three of us. And two thousand others who chose to believe in something better than fear."

The sun completed its descent, painting the sky in final colors before darkness claimed the horizon.

Two thousand thirteen immortals across four continents. Fifty-one nations recognizing their existence. A daughter who would lead the next generation toward achievements I couldn't imagine.

[ 2010-2015 CAMPAIGN: COMPLETE ]

[ OBJECTIVES: EXCEEDED ]

[ ALLIANCE STATUS: GLOBAL CIVILIZATION ]

[ NEXT PHASE: CONSOLIDATION (2015-2025) ]

The foundation was laid for centuries ahead.

Whatever challenges emerged—and challenges would emerge, because peace was never permanent and vigilance was always required—the alliance had proven that cooperation could replace conflict, that partnership could supersede persecution.

Eve was right. The future was ours to build.

I intended to spend the next century helping her build it.
