Chapter 4 - Mana Storm

Over a month has passed since Matthew woke up in Evan's body. He decided to be a handyman like his father and and earn some money. He spent the rest of his time training to fight with his sister. Sometimes his father and uncle Wade also tagged along to train him. This causes his fighting skills to steadily improve. However he still wasn't on the same level as professional soldiers yet. On day he was coming home from being a handyman at a nearby farmer's house. While on the road he saw that the sky darkened relatively quickly. At first he thought that is was a regular storm. However his opinion changed once he saw that a few red clouds started appearing over the city. "Mana storm" he said.

Mana storms were special events. They were different from regular storms. They only appear over a particular area at a time. Coloured clouds always appeared during every Mana storm. The coloured clouds were different from regular clouds as they contained a large amount of Mana. The coloured clouds that appeared during every mana storm signifies the teir of the Mana storm. Red coloured clouds represents low teir Mana storm. Yellow clouds represents mid teir Mana storm. Blue clouds represents high teir Mana storms. Each teir of Mana storm discharges lightning of colour, that is based on the teir of the Mana storm. The lightning is called Mana lightning. Since it was a low teir Mana storm, it was expected that the storm would discharge red Mana lightning. Whenever a Mana lightning strikes the ground, monsters are created on the spot. The strength of monsters and the number of monsters depends on the strength of the Mana lightning. The strength of the Mana lightning gets stronger successively. Each Mana lightning is stronger than the previous Mana lightning. This goes on until all the Mana in the storm is exhausted. Then the Mana storm stops.

Matthew was alarmed. Was a Mana storm about to start in the city? The red clouds started to move in a circular path. They revolved around a point that was less than a kilometre from where Matthew was standing. Several people noticed the red clouds. "Look mama there are red coloured clouds in the sky." "Everyone run, a Mana storm is about to begin." "Quick someone send a message to the city lord." "Oh no! A Mana storm means stronger wild beasts. I am more scared of them."

Everytime a Mana storm begins, the density of Mana increases in the surrounding air. The radius of Mana empowered air depends on the teir of the Mana storm. Even a low teir Mana storm can empower dozens of kilometres of radius of air. This air has a scary property. Whenever the Mana empowered air is inhaled by wild, savage, untameable beasts and large plants they mutated and grow stronger in various ways. They almost certainly become more aggressive. However the relief is that their metamorphosis can take time as they continue to digest their gains. So dealing with them could wait.

Now the more important task was to deal with the monsters created by the Mana storm. The spinning Mana clouds created a large vortex. The vortex kept on getting more powerful with each passing moment. Matthew knew that he had to get ready to fight. Fighting and killing the monsters created by the Mana storm would earn him a lot of rewards from the City lord. On top of that he would get some real fighting experience in the process. When Matthew was thinking about this, abruptly a message appeared on his retina.

[Quest:

Be a Hero(C grade): protect the city of Dunbreagh which has become your current residence from the low grade Mana storm. Defeat all the monsters which are created by the Mana storm with the help of the citizens of Dunbreagh.

Reward: 30 exp points will be added to ability Sense of Mana and 10 attribute points will be added to each attribute.]

Matthew salivated when he saw the reward. It would definitely make him a lot more powerful. However he was also scared at the prospect of fighting his first real battle. Thankfully he wouldn't have to deal with all the waves of monsters on his own. The City lord should start mobilizing all the troops under his command as soon as he learns of the impending Mana storm. He took out his dagger and became ready.

CRACK

The first lightning struck the ground. On the spot where the lightning fell a goblin appeared. Matthew took out his basic sword, that he purchased a few days ago with his own money. The goblin was green skinned, yellow eyed, short, hunched, lean and thin. He had a spear in his hand. The goblin spotted Matthew and charged at him pointing the spear at his chest. Matthew was ready. He doged the attack and smirked. He was faster than the goblin. The goblin screeched and thrust his spear again.

CLANG

Matthew knocked the spear away by using his sword and surged forward. The goblin raised his spear to defend himself and block Matthew but it was too late. Matthew was already in the goblins reach. He gave the goblin a sharp kick to the knee. The goblin's knee snapped and bent at an unnatural angle. The goblin screamed in pain and folded downward. The sword in Matthew's hand flashed under the bright light of the Sun. With one clean strike, like the one which he had practiced tens of times before, the sword in his hand cut across the goblin's neck before the goblin could even land on the ground. The goblin's body collapsed on the ground lifelessly, his spear clattering uselessly beside his severed head. The fight had come to an end. Matthew was victorious. Matthew was extatic over his first kill. Then a system notification appeared on his retina.

[You have successfully killed a speargoblin. You have gained the following attribute points: speed+2, agility+1, constitution+1.]

"Yes" he said. This was just the beginning of the Mana storm. More waves would come, bringing even stronger monsters, which would strengthen him further.
