Chapter 8 - Chapter 6: Finding Lawsons lab

The humid, heavy air of the Louisiana bayou clung to the Quadjet as it touched down near a secluded farmhouse. The scent of salt, moss, and blooming jasmine replaced the sterile ozone of Project Pegasus. As the ramp lowered, a woman and a young girl stepped out onto the porch, their expressions a mixture of disbelief and guarded hope.

Maria Rambeau looked exactly like the photos—strong, steady, and wearing the invisible weight of a pilot who had lost her wingman. Beside her, Monica, no older than eleven, stared with wide, sparkling eyes at the group descending from the experimental craft.

"Carol?" Maria whispered, her voice cracking.

The reunion was a whirlwind of tears and confusion. Inside the house, the atmosphere was thick with the kind of history Tony only knew from a screenplay, but feeling it in person was different. It felt heavy. It felt real.

"Look, I think it's best if the kids stay out of this for a minute," Fury said, gesturing toward Tony and Monica. "Jarvis, you mind keeping an eye on them? We need to talk logistics."

"Actually, Agent Fury, I believe I have already exceeded my 'supervision' quota for the decade," Jarvis remarked, though he dutifully stood by.

Maria nodded, her hand resting on Carol's arm. "Monica, baby, why don't you take Tony and... Mr. Jarvis, was it? Go show them where we put the old flight gear. We need a minute."

Monica didn't need to be told twice. She grabbed Tony's hand—much to his internal surprise—and led the way toward the stairs. "Come on! My mom has all the boxes from the hangar in the spare room. We've been sorting them for years."

Upstairs, the "Alfred" of the Stark household (as Tony occasionally thought of him, though Jarvis was his own brand of legend) and the actual Jarvis helped Monica haul heavy cardboard boxes down to the living room. Tony made a show of struggling with a small box, playing the part of the ten-year-old, while Jarvis moved with the effortless grace of a man who could carry a grand piano if it meant keeping his suit unwrinkled.

"Alright, bring 'em here!" Monica shouted down the stairs.

Carol came into the living room, her eyes scanning the debris of her former life. Monica began pulling out photos, one by one. "This was at the academy. And this one... look, this was the day you taught me how to make a paper airplane that actually flew across the yard."

Carol touched the glossy paper, her fingers trembling. The memories were there, dancing just behind a veil of Kree conditioning.

"I'm gonna go get your jacket," Monica said suddenly, her face lighting up. "Mom wouldn't let me wear it since I spilled ketchup on it, but it's still the coolest thing in the house."

"I'll help," Tony said quickly, hopping off his chair.

As they walked toward the back porch, Tony's internal alarm bells started ringing. He remembered this part. The Skrull, Norex, would try to intercept them by mimicking Maria. He reached into his waistband, feeling the cold plastic of the high-voltage taser he'd "borrowed" from a security station back at Pegasus while everyone was looking at the holes Carol was punching in the ceiling.

"Monica!" a voice called out from the shadows of the yard.

It sounded exactly like Maria Rambeau. The figure stepped into the light of the porch, smiling warmly. "Honey, what are you doing out here? Come here, give me a hand with these supplies."

Monica started to step forward, but Tony grabbed her arm. He felt the girl flinch, but he didn't let go. He looked at the "Maria" in the yard and smirked. It was a cold, knowing expression that didn't belong on a child's face.

"Hey, 'Mom'?" Tony called out. "Quick question. What's my favorite flavor of ice cream?"

The Skrull blinked, the Maria-mask faltering for a split second. "Sweetie, you know I—"

"Wrong. I'm not her son, and you're a terrible spy," Tony snapped.

Before the Skrull could react, Tony lunged forward with a speed that surprised even himself. He jammed the taser into the Skrull's side and pulled the trigger. A crackle of blue electricity lit up the porch. The Skrull let out a gargled yelp, his form shimmering and rippling like a glitching hologram before he collapsed into a heap of green scales and unconsciousness.

Monica let out a blood-curdling scream. "Mom! You killed my mom!"

"Look at the floor, Monica!" Tony shouted, pointing.

The girl gasped as the body on the ground shifted into its true green, ridged form. Her eyes went wide as saucers. Tony didn't give her time to process it. He grabbed her hand and ran back into the house. "Inside! Now!"

They burst into the living room just as Talos, the Skrull leader, was being backed into a corner—not by Fury or Carol, but by Goose. The cat was hissing, its back arched, and Talos looked like he was staring down a hungry tiger.

"That's not a cat!" Talos yelled, pointing a trembling finger at the orange furball. "It's a Flerken!"

The group turned as the kids skidded into the room. Monica ran straight to her actual mother, sobbing into her waist.

"What happened?" Fury barked, his hand going to his holster.

"One of his guys was playing dress-up on the porch," Tony said, holding up the taser like a trophy. "He's taking a short nap in the garden."

Jarvis looked at Tony, then at the taser, and finally let out a breath he'd been holding since they landed. A small, proud smile touched his lips. "Well done, Master Anthony. A remarkably... measured response. I am pleased to see you've learned the value of a preemptive strike over a headlong rush."

"Listen to me!" Talos pleaded, holding his hands up. "I didn't come here to fight. I came to talk. Please. Just... sit down. Listen to the truth."

The group moved to a small, cluttered shed in the backyard. Talos pulled out a high-tech Skrull hard drive and connected it to a makeshift interface. The screen flickered to life.

It was the black box recording from the crash.

The audio was grainy but unmistakable. The voice of Dr. Wendy Lawson—Mar-Vell—filled the room, followed by Carol's voice. They heard the frantic struggle, the realization that they were being hunted by the Kree, and finally, Mar-Vell's dying wish.

"Follow these coordinates... 5-4-0-3-1..."

Tony watched Carol. Her fists were clenched so tight they were glowing, and tears were tracking through the soot on her cheeks. As the log ended, she turned and sprinted out of the shed into the night air.

"They lied to me," she whispered as the others followed her out. "Yon-Rogg... he killed her."

"Now you understand," Talos said softly, standing by the door. "You're on the wrong side of an unjust war, Carol."

"No," Carol snapped, her voice trembling with rage. "You're terrorists. I saw the ruins on Tonfa. My people told me—"

"The ruins were made by the Accusers!" Talos interrupted, his voice rising with desperate passion. "My people were refugees on Tonfa. We were homeless because we resisted Kree rule. They destroyed my planet, and the handful of us left will be slaughtered unless you help me finish what Mar-Vell started."

Maria Rambeau stepped forward. "Lawson always told us our work at Pegasus was meant to help stop wars, not fight them."

"She wanted you to help us find the Core," Talos told Carol.

"I already destroyed it," Carol said.

"No," Talos spoke, stepping closer to Carol. "You destroyed the engine. The Core—the power source—is in a remote location. A lab."

Carol turned to him, her brow furrowed. "And you'll use it to destroy us, won't you?" she asked Talos.

"Or he'll use it to find his family," Tony said firmly.

The silence that followed was heavy. Jarvis tried to pull Tony back by the shoulder, but Tony gave him a look—a look that said I've got this—and the butler slowly let go.

Tony walked right up to the space between the Kree soldier and the Skrull commander. "Think about it," Tony said, his voice dropping into that analytical tone that made him sound thirty years older. "Talos, you came to Earth with only a handful of soldiers. That means you're desperate. You don't know where the rest of your people are. Mar-Vell was developing a Light Speed Engine at her lab. If you're making a ship capable of traversing space, why build the lab on a planet with a hostile atmosphere and high gravity?"

Tony looked up at the stars. "The lab isn't on Earth. It's in space. In orbit. That's why you couldn't find it. You were looking down when you should have been looking up. And Dr. Lawson was a scientist, not a conqueror. She wouldn't hide a weapon. She'd hide people. Refugees... Your family."

Talos looked at Tony with a look of pure, unadulterated awe. "I... I have met many beings in this galaxy, child. But your mind... it is a special thing." He turned to Carol and nodded slowly. "It is true. We just want a home. You and I, Carol... we both lost everything to the Kree. Can't you see it? You aren't one of them."

"You don't know me," Carol whispered, her eyes dark. "I don't even know who I am."

Maria Rambeau stepped into her space, grabbing Carol's shoulders. "Your name is Carol Danvers. You are the woman on that black box risking her life to do the right thing. You're my best friend who supported me as a mother and a pilot when no one else would. You are a huge pain in the ass, and you are the strongest person I knew way before you could shoot fire from your hands. You are a good person, Carol. Look at me. I know you."

Carol crumbled, leaning into Maria's embrace as the tears finally came.

Maria:" I got you girl, I got you"

Back inside the house, the mood shifted. Maria made everyone coffee—and handed Tony a juice box with a knowing wink.

"So," Fury said, leaning back in a wooden chair. "Where do we find this lab?"

"The location where I crashed," Carol said, her voice steadying. "It was just below the lab's position in orbit. Just like Tony said."

"Basic physics," Maria added, shrugging.

Talos turned to his science officer, Norex—the Skrull Tony had tasered, who was now awake and looking very sheepish. "In orbit," Talos muttered. "It's been in orbit this whole time and we never knew? You are my science guy, right?"

"Space is big, boss!" Norex defended.

"Yon-Rogg will catch up to us soon," Carol warned.

"Are we going to space?" Fury asked, sounding both excited and terrified.

Norex stood up. "A few tweaks to your vessel out there should do it. I can handle the modifications. We just need to boost the shielding and the thruster output."

Tony's eyes lit up. He slammed his juice box down on the table. "Can I help? I want to see how you interface your skrull technology with the Earth-based avionics."

Norex looked at Talos, who nodded. "He's earned it. Let the hatchling watch."

Jarvis let out a groan of pure frustration. "Anthony, we should really stay on Earth. The 'great beyond' is no place for a child of your... energetic temperament."

"J, you know I'm going to sneak on board anyway," Tony whispered. "Might as well let me go through the front door."

Jarvis closed his eyes and whispered a silent apology to Maria Stark. He pulled out the brick-phone and typed out a message: Master Anthony had a very late night and is currently in a deep sleep. We shall be indisposed for several hours. Do not worry.

For the next few hours, Tony was in heaven. He hovered over Norex, watching as the Skrull used a handheld multi-tool to rewrite the Quadjet's code. Tony asked questions about plasma cooling, sub-light navigation, and gravitational plating. Norex, surprisingly patient, answered them all, clearly impressed by the human boy's theoretical grasp.

As they neared completion, Tony remembered the movie. He remembered that Norex wouldn't make it if things went south with Yon-Rogg. He looked around at the spare parts on the hangar floor. He grabbed a small energy capacitor, some copper wiring, and a handful of magnesium shavings.

He worked quickly, his small fingers nimble. He handed a small, metallic cylinder to Norex.

"What's this?" the Skrull asked.

"A makeshift flash-bang," Tony whispered. "Not enough to blow up the ship, but enough to stun someone like Yon-Rogg if he gets too close. Keep it in your pocket. You might need it later."

Norex looked at the device, then at Tony, and tucked it away. "Thanks, kid."

Finally, the ship was ready. Carol walked out of the house, and the room went silent. She had used the Kree tech on her wrist to change the colors of her suit. No more Kree green and black. Now, she wore a striking combination of red, gold, and deep blue.

"Looking good, Captain," Tony said, leaning against the ramp. He gave her a playful wink. "You know, ladies sometimes dig the kid with the high-tech weaponry. Just saying."

Carol laughed, a light, genuine sound. She actually blushed a little, shaking her head. "You're a charmer, Tony Stark. Maybe in fifteen years, come find me."

"I'll put it in my calendar," Tony flirted back, making Fury snort and Jarvis put his head in his hands.

They boarded the plane. Talos was the last one in, pressing his forehead against his soldier's in a traditional Skrull goodbye before the ramp sealed.

"Alright," Carol said, taking the pilot's seat. "Let's go find a lab."

Tony sat in the back with Goose on his lap. He scratched the Flerken behind the ears. "Good girl," he murmured. Goose purred, a sound that felt like a low-frequency engine.

As they ascended, the group began pepper Talos with questions.

"So, the shapeshifting," Fury said, leaning over. "Physiologically, how does that work? Can you turn into anything? Like a Venus Flytrap? I'll give you fifty bucks right now if you turn into a Venus Flytrap."

Talos sighed, looking at the ceiling. "I am the commander of a displaced people, not a party trick, Nicholas."

"Fifty-five," Fury countered.

Tony looked at Maria Rambeau. "Hey, Maria? Can you show me the controls? I've flown a lot of... simulators... but I want to see how this handles."

Maria looked at Carol, who nodded. "Give him a go, Maria. I bet he'd be better than most pilots I've seen."

Maria showed him the yoke, the throttle, and the new fusion-drive toggle Norex had installed. Tony's hands were steady as he absorbed the data.

"Buckle up," Carol called out. "We're switching gears from scramblejet to fusion."

She slammed the lever forward.

The Quadjet didn't just fly; it punched through the sky. The atmosphere blurred, then thinned, as they shot through the stratosphere and into the blackness of space.

"Is the turbulence normal?" Fury asked, gripping his armrests.

"Pretty much," Carol replied.

Suddenly, the weight of gravity vanished. Everyone lifted slightly out of their seats. Goose drifted an inch off Tony's lap, meowing in surprise as she clawed at his shirt to stay anchored.

"Locking down on coordinate grip," Carol said.

Talos unbuckled as the artificial gravity Norex had rigged kicked in. "It's here."

"I don't see anything but stars," Fury said, squinting through the cockpit glass. "Is it in front of the nothing or behind it?"

Carol activated her wrist device. A holographic map of the immediate space projected into the air. She pressed a sequence of buttons. "Decloaking activated."

In front of them, the stars seemed to ripple and tear. A massive, jagged shadow emerged from the void—a Kree Imperial Cruiser, silent and imposing, hanging in the dark like a sleeping giant.

Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Maria Stark sat in her hotel suite, staring at a security recording Howard had managed to pull from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s backup server.

The footage showed Tony and Jarvis—the latter looking remarkably nimble—running down a flight of emergency stairs with a black man in bandaids and a blonde woman in a flight suit.

"Howard," Maria said, her voice terrifyingly calm. "When we catch up to them, I'm going to ground him until he's thirty. And Jarvis is going to be doing the laundry for the entire staff by hand for a year."

Howard stared at his son on the screen, who was laughing as he leapt into a government sedan. "I don't know, Maria... look at that form. The kid's a natural."

"Howard!"

"Right. Grounded. Definitely grounded."
