The celebration continued without interruption.
The orchestra played another elegant piece while guests laughed over champagne and conversations drifted effortlessly through the ballroom. Couples occupied the dance floor, and those who had chosen to remain at their tables seemed completely unaware that anything was out of the ordinary.
From where she stood, Mrs. Hart accepted another round of congratulations with practiced grace.
She thanked the guests politely before allowing her eyes to wander around the ballroom. Almost immediately, she frowned ever so slightly.
Miranda hadn't returned yet.
At first, she dismissed the thought.
It wasn't unusual for a bride-to-be to spend a few extra minutes touching up her makeup or collecting herself after so many hours of greeting guests. Tonight had been exhausting, and a brief moment alone was understandable.
She turned her attention back to another guest.
Another conversation followed.
Another polite smile.
Another toast.
