Chapter 20 - Curse

During the journey to Tsige City, Makoto's group was attacked by monsters several times. At first, Makoto asked Mio to deal with them, but since Toa and the others wanted to collect valuable monster parts—and because Makoto himself wanted to learn how to dissect monsters and identify which parts were valuable—Mio ended up sulking. She was constantly being told what she could or couldn't attack. As a result, the task of dealing with monsters that Toa's group couldn't defeat fell to Tomoe. Tomoe accepted the role gladly, as it allowed her to act like a samurai, just as she had always wanted.

The cart that had initially been empty was now filled with materials and various valuable monster parts. After traveling for several days, Makoto could finally see the gates of Tsige City in the distance. While passing through a forest, Makoto discovered a group of monsters called Ruby Eyes, materials required by Patrick Rembrandt to cure his wife and two daughters.

"Tomoe, there are monsters ahead. Aim for their bellies so the valuable parts won't be damaged," Makoto instructed.

"Leave it to me, Waka," Tomoe replied, then rushed ahead to defeat the monsters.

By the time Makoto and the others caught up, the monsters had already been cleanly split in half by Tomoe.

"As expected, Tomoe-sama is amazing," Toa said.

"All the monsters were cut in half with incredible precision," Louisa added.

Toa and her group immediately began dissecting the monsters to collect the valuable parts. After resuming their journey, they soon arrived at the gates of Tsige City. After a brief inspection by the gate guards, Makoto and his group entered the city without any trouble.

Makoto decided to head to the Adventurers' Guild to sell the monster materials they had obtained and to accept Patrick Rembrandt's request to deliver Ruby Eye monster eyes.

"Excuse me, I'd like to take this quest," Makoto said to the receptionist using written magic.

"This is a special-grade quest. Are you sure you can handle it?" the receptionist asked hesitantly.

Makoto then showed his adventurer card.

"This is my adventurer card. I've already collected the required materials," he wrote.

Since Zetsuya City hadn't been completely destroyed, information from there hadn't been cut off, so Makoto, Tomoe, and Mio didn't need to register as adventurers again. After confirming Makoto's card, the receptionist gladly approved the quest.

After splitting the profits from selling the monster materials with Toa and her group, Makoto was about to leave when Toa stopped him.

"Um, Makoto-sama, I want to thank you for saving us. May I treat you all to dinner tonight?" Toa asked earnestly.

Makoto, Tomoe, and Mio exchanged glances.

"Alright. Contact me later tonight using the adventurer card," Makoto replied in writing.

After that, Makoto and Toa's group went their separate ways. Makoto began searching for a hotel to stay at for the night.

"Waka-sama, there's so much food I've never seen before," Mio said excitedly while looking at the food stalls along the street.

"If you want, feel free to buy whatever you like," Makoto replied.

"You might get some new cooking ideas," Tomoe added.

"Then I'll be off for a bit, Waka-sama," Mio said before heading off to buy food.

Makoto and Tomoe went to the hotel recommended by the guild receptionist. After parking the cart and putting the horse in the stable, they booked a room at the hotel. Soon after, Mio returned carrying a huge pile of food.

"Waka-sama, I'm back!" Mio said cheerfully.

Seeing the mountain of food, Makoto could only shake his head.

"You can eat it slowly in the room," he said as they headed upstairs.

That night, Makoto received a message from Toa via the adventurer card, telling him the location of the restaurant where they would meet.

"Tomoe, do you think we could make something like an adventurer card?" Makoto asked.

"Making something with similar functions isn't difficult, Waka, but making it exactly like an adventurer card would be," Tomoe replied.

"What part would be difficult?" Makoto asked.

"The materials used. To create a card with so many functions requires rare materials and deep knowledge," Tomoe explained. "For example, the material used in this card seems to be made by combining various substances through alchemy."

"If we just made something like a simple smartphone from your previous world—with functions like sending messages, calling, or taking pictures—we could do that. But it wouldn't take the form of an adventurer card," Tomoe continued.

"What do you think about asking the elder dwarves to create devices like smartphones for the people of the new world?" Makoto suggested. "They could make daily life easier and also serve as identification."

"That's a great idea, Waka. We should also plan a currency system for the new world," Tomoe said.

"I've already thought about it," Makoto replied seriously, "but I don't want to rush a technological leap that could destabilize the foundation itself. I want the people of the new world to develop step by step. Even with the knowledge I brought from another world, a sudden leap in technology could easily cause deadly incidents."

"For example, relativity theory—used correctly, it leads to positive technological advancement. But in the wrong hands, it becomes the seed of weapons of mass destruction," Makoto said solemnly.

"Waka-sama, Tomoe-san, why are you discussing such difficult topics?" Mio interrupted. "Right now, we're about to meet Toa and the others for dinner."

Makoto and Tomoe looked at each other and forced awkward smiles.

"You're right, Mio. We should hurry or we'll be late," Makoto said stiffly.

They met Toa's group at a meat restaurant. Upon seeing the food, Makoto completely forgot about his earlier conversation.

"Mio, this meat is really good," Makoto said while eating enthusiastically.

"Then I'll definitely look for the recipe and ingredients so I can cook it for you, Waka-sama," Mio replied happily.

During dinner, Makoto chatted casually with Toa and the others. Afterward, Makoto, Tomoe, and Mio took a walk to enjoy the city atmosphere before returning to the hotel.

Inside the room, as Makoto prepared to sleep, Tomoe suddenly spoke up.

"Waka, don't you feel like something's been missing these past few days?"

"Something missing?" Makoto asked, confused.

"For the past few days, you've been so energetic that you haven't touched us at all. We need affection too," Tomoe said seriously.

Mio nodded vigorously beside her. "Tomoe-san is right, Waka-sama."

"I guess I got too excited about seeing the outside world and neglected your feelings," Makoto admitted after thinking for a moment.

Without hesitation, Makoto hugged the excited Tomoe and kissed Mio, who blushed slightly.

(What happened next can be left to the reader's imagination.)

The next morning, Makoto woke up with Tomoe and Mio clinging to both of his arms. When he tried to move, they woke up as well.

"Good morning, Tomoe. Mio," Makoto said.

"Good morning, Waka," Tomoe replied.

"Good morning, Waka-sama," Mio said.

"Could you let go of my arms?" Makoto asked.

"Isn't this fine, Waka?" Tomoe replied.

Mio didn't answer and only hugged his arm even tighter.

After pampering Tomoe and Mio, Makoto finally managed to get out of bed. After getting ready, they had breakfast at the hotel. Afterward, Makoto planned to visit the Rembrandt Company to deliver the Ruby Eye materials needed to cure Patrick Rembrandt's family.

Upon arriving at the Rembrandt Company, Makoto approached the receptionist.

"Excuse me, I'm here to complete a special quest from the Adventurers' Guild," he wrote.

The receptionist was slightly surprised by Makoto's appearance but maintained a professional smile.

"May I ask who you are?"

"My name is Makoto. I'm an adventurer," Makoto wrote, showing his adventurer card.

Seeing Makoto's level, the receptionist was shocked.

"Please wait a moment," she said.

Soon, she returned with an elderly servant who carried the aura of a veteran.

"My name is Morris, head butler of Master Patrick Rembrandt," the man introduced himself.

"My name is Makoto, an adventurer," Makoto replied in writing.

"The receptionist told me you've come to deliver the materials from the guild quest," Morris said.

"Yes, I've brought the required materials," Makoto replied, pointing to the sack he carried.

"Then please follow me to meet the master," Morris said.

Makoto followed Morris into a luxuriously designed room decorated with expensive antiques such as vases and paintings. Standing before him was a serious-looking middle-aged man.

"Welcome to the Rembrandt Company. My name is Patrick Rembrandt. It's a pleasure to meet you," Patrick said, extending his hand.

"My name is Makoto, an adventurer. It's a pleasure to meet you," Makoto wrote as he shook Patrick's hand.

"I've heard from my subordinates that you brought the materials we need," Patrick said seriously.

"Yes, I did," Makoto replied, then produced two Ruby Eye monster eyes.

"May I examine them?" Patrick asked eagerly.

"Of course, Rembrandt-san," Makoto replied calmly.

"These are genuine," Patrick said after examining them.

"If I may ask, why do you need these materials?" Makoto wrote, pretending not to know.

Patrick exchanged glances with Morris and nodded.

"My wife and two daughters are suffering from a severe illness," Patrick explained. "They're afflicted with an eighth-level curse. The only way to save them is with a universal magical medicine called Ambrosia. These eyes will be refined and used to create that medicine."

"We've already captured the mastermind behind this, but we still don't know anything beyond the curse's level," Patrick said sadly.

"If you don't mind, I'd like to help with refining the Ambrosia. I also have an acquaintance who's an alchemy master. I think we could save time and effort by asking for his help," Makoto wrote.

At first, Patrick was hesitant, but when he learned that Makoto knew an alchemy master, his expression brightened.

"That exceeds my expectations. Until now, I've felt nothing but despair—but now it seems I can take a step forward," Patrick said.

"A step forward?" Makoto asked in writing.

"To make one dose of medicine, two Ruby Eye eyes are needed," Patrick explained.

"In that case, everyone can be saved," Makoto wrote, then took out four more Ruby Eye eyes.

Seeing the six Ruby Eye eyes, Patrick and Morris were overwhelmed with joy and even shed tears. At the same time, Rembrandt's subordinates who had been eavesdropping rushed in to congratulate him.

"Sorry for the commotion," Patrick said to Makoto. "Here is the signed receipt. The refinement will be done at a later date."

"Understood. I'll contact my acquaintance and bring them here tomorrow," Makoto replied using written magic.
