Daisy Irving sat by the second-floor railing, listening, her hand involuntarily gripping the handrail tightly.
She longed to speak with Ryan Osborne face-to-face, but she was terrified of him seeing her in such a wretched state.
She quickly turned her wheelchair, intending to flee.
But the man from downstairs had already bounded up the stairs. Just as she was frantically trying to get away, he came to a stop at the end of the hallway.
Mrs. Irving followed closely behind him, her voice trembling. "Daisy, Ryan said he wants to talk to you."
Daisy Irving's back went rigid. She wanted to cry, to lash out at Mrs. Irving. 'Why did you let Ryan Osborne come up here?'
But she didn't. Years of suppressing her feelings had taught her to be strong and stoic. Even though her heart felt like it was being twisted by a knife, she still managed to force a calm smile onto her face.
