Chapter 34 - War Shadows

After a few days...

I had around 35k.

Enough to buy that short sword. Finally.

One dive left. Only one. For armor. And for survival.

Safe and sound. Quick peek at floor 4, kill a few kobolds or anything that crossed my path, hit the pantry.

If it's empty? Lucky. If not? Kill whatever's on the spot.

Got Blue Patheon Wings? Double luck.

No? Just a full sack of whichever herb I can get my hands on.

But too much work. And carrying it back to surface? Hell.

Still. One dive. Then armor. Then I'm set.

I tightened my grip on my pouch and headed for the entrance.

One more time.

---

I entered the dungeon.

It was quiet.

Not just quiet. Like… something different.

Floor 1. 2. 3. All nearly empty. No monsters.

I passed through easy. Too easy.

Maybe a party just passed through? That would explain it.

The fourth floor. Finally.

Two kobolds.

I quickly finished them and collected the magic stones. Must be my imagination.

---

Then I entered the pantry.

The place looked beautiful.

Blue Latheon Wings. Last time I found 7. But now? At least 15.

Fifteen. Wow.

They grow in wall cracks. Not underneath. Mainly on the walls.

I set the sack down carefully and looked around. There. And there. And over there.

Clusters of blue petals tucked into crevices. Delicate. Fragile. Less money if damaged.

Slow. Steady. Gentle.

This was it. Armor money. Right here.

I started working, reaching for the first cluster, then the second.

---

As I worked my way through, it happened.

Like knives. A bunch rubbing all together.

Sharp. Metallic. Wrong.

My heart thumped.

Oh god! No!

War Shadows.

I turned back slowly.

A bunch.

Not one. Not two. Four.

Standing there. Blocking the exit. Silent. Waiting.

Why the hell are you on floor 4?

Yours is 5. Floor 5!

Already last time doesn't make sense. But now?

Not here. Not here!

---

Be calm. Be calm.

They know I'm screwed. So if I panic? Quick death.

If I keep quiet I may have—

Nope. I'm dead.

Ok. Ok. Heart. Calm down.

I took my sword out in one hand. Sack in the other.

Their faces followed my every movement.

I adjusted my stance. Shifted my weight.

Then ran towards them.

They moved the same instant. Hands raised. All in sync.

I threw the sack at their faces.

Can't cover all of them, but at least for a fraction of a second their focus faltered.

Then I jumped left, breaking through the line.

One swiped its hand. I rolled. Just an inch from my head.

If I hadn't tucked, my head would've been on the floor.

I scrambled up and ran towards the crack—the exit back to floor 4.

---

What waited outside?

Another two War Shadows.

Not only them.

A Frog Shooter. Two kobolds. At least four goblins.

I stopped. Chest heaving. Sword still in hand.

Ok.

Something is off.

Dungeon trap. Specially set.

This is gonna be my grave.

The end card!
