Chapter 17 - Destroying Humanity

As Hayashi observed the task force soldier, Yukino had already pulled out her tablet and began reading his identity information:

"Member of an unknown organization from another world, equipped with tactical gear, carrying what appears to be a UMP9 submachine gun, HK416 assault rifle, dagger, and silencer...

Suspected special forces unit, approximately twelve members in total. Yesterday, they captured Tokyo's largest signal base station and subsequently breached Tokyo's root server base, injecting certain data into it...

As of now, local cybersecurity personnel have yet to discover what exactly they injected into the server and network.

After receiving the alarm, anti-terrorist forces engaged in a fierce firefight, killing eleven and capturing one.

Upon detecting abnormal physical readings—body temperature far below normal human temperature, strength and agility far exceeding ordinary people, no pain sensation—genetic testing found no evidence of unknown genetic agents being used...

His existence was classified as an anomalous item and transferred to the Anomaly Management Bureau."

Yukino recited the identity information of the 'terrorist,' who was bound in shackles, in one breath, her brows slightly furrowed.

She didn't understand why these guys would attack communication base stations and root servers. Were they terrorists? Just to disrupt the network?

But if they were truly terrorists, wouldn't it be better to physically destroy the servers directly?

However, Yukino wasn't particularly concerned about him; after all, he was just a slightly stronger living dead, at most equipped with special gear.

In her eyes, such an anomaly was far from reaching a dangerous level.

It was far inferior to the Rule [Anomaly] she had encountered.

Yukino then scanned the subsequent information and finally concluded:

"After his capture, the Bureau interrogated him several times, but no valuable information was obtained. Hmm... no pain sensation, living dead state.

If not for the glint of spirituality and intellect in his eyes, he would be no different from a zombie. Conventional interrogation methods would certainly be ineffective on him."

Yukino glanced at the terrorist's eyes, then reminded Hayashi.

However, despite the reminder, after seeing his file, she didn't believe Hayashi could really get anything out of him.

In his current state, he was no better than a biological weapon.

"Thank you."

Hayashi nodded to Yukino, thanking her for her detailed explanation.

"A living dead, huh? How about Hayashi tries to get him to play a game with you? ~ If he loses, he has to tell you all their objectives!"

Yuki suggested from the side.

But to her and Yukino's surprise, Hayashi said something inexplicable to the terrorist.

"Secure, Contain, Protect!"

"?" Yukino and Yuki were full of questions.

But they noticed that the terrorist, whose expression hadn't changed since they entered, reacted to the outside world for the first time.

He raised his resolute, indifferent eyes and looked at Hayashi.

"Omega-2 'Watchmen' member."

He introduced himself in a cold tone, waiting for Hayashi to state his identity.

"Field Team under Doctor D. We arrived in this world earlier than you. Why did you attack the root servers?"

Hayashi lied without blinking; after all, a man's identity abroad is self-proclaimed.

And Doctor D of the Foundation is the head of the Training and Development Department, responsible for cultivating response teams and field agents.

He is a Level 4 clearance agent of the Foundation.

"Field? Agent? What's D's nickname?"

He clearly knew of the Foundation's famous Doctor D and perhaps even participated in projects led by Doctor D himself.

"King of Butterflies, Doctor Apocalypse."

Hayashi answered without hesitation.

"…"

After a moment of silence, he finally spoke, much to Yukino and Yuki's surprise.

And what he said immediately startled Yukino and Yuki and also stunned Hayashi.

"To destroy humanity."

"Huh?" Yukino and Yuki.

"What did you say?" Hayashi.

"We injected a dormant virus containing SCP-096's image into the base stations and root servers and simultaneously deployed an externally modified SCP-173..."

Yukino and Yuki didn't understand what SCP-096 and SCP-173 meant, but Hayashi did.

And precisely because he understood, Hayashi fell into deep suspicion regarding the identity of this guy in front of him.

Good heavens, although in his previous life, people on the internet always joked about the Foundation, 'We Secure, We Contain, We Protect, We Run'—but no matter what, the Foundation's overall direction is an organization that protects humanity!

Protecting humanity within normal cognition, burying anomalies in the dark!

And now, what did he hear?

To destroy humanity, this guy simultaneously released SCP-096 and SCP-173... one an immortal monster that, once someone sees its face, will relentlessly pursue them, even if they escape to Mars; the other an immortal sculpture that will instantly snap your neck if you don't look at it, even if you just blink.

The Shy Guy and the Peanut.

Wait, he just said they made external modifications to SCP-173, the Peanut, didn't he? They wouldn't have carved SCP-096's face onto the Peanut, would they!

—!

Instantly, Hayashi felt that things had become serious.

However, compared to this, Hayashi felt that what was more important was:

"Why destroy humanity?" Hayashi asked.

"This is a resolution unanimously passed by all O5 Council members and approved by the Ethics Committee."

After saying this, he fell silent.

"…"

His words made Hayashi take a sharp breath.

One must know that the Foundation's council members are not like those internet-famous politicians. Their selection criteria are as stringent as, or even exceed, the Xuanwu Gate succession system of the Tang Dynasty.

As the brain of the Foundation—the O5 Council members may lack morals, but they are certainly not incompetent.

And what's even more crucial is... the 'Destroy Humanity' resolution passed the Ethics Committee's review.

Although the Foundation's ethics are a joke in some people's eyes.

But... in the current situation, it's not funny at all.

"Why..."

Hayashi continued to press but couldn't get any more answers.

It wasn't that the remaining information was too classified for him to speak, but rather that as an executor of Foundation projects, even as part of the Watchmen unit, he didn't know the specific reasons.

Hayashi fell into deep thought but for a moment couldn't figure out what kind of crisis the Foundation had fallen into that would lead them to make such a choice.

After all, the Foundation is a large fan-fiction project, with fan-made secondary settings as numerous as stars and parallel universes even more abundant than the Marvel Universe.

It wouldn't be strange for them to encounter any kind of world-ending crisis.

Hayashi only knew about some popular containment projects.

"From what you're saying, your organization in your world intends to eliminate the humans in your world, right? Why are you spreading dangerous creatures in our world?"

Although she didn't understand what the 173 and 096 he mentioned represented, she understood that he wanted to destroy humanity.

She couldn't help but question him angrily.

Upon hearing this, the task force member looked at Hayashi, then said to Yukino.

"Mission directive: eliminate all humans!"

'That naturally includes you, even if you are from another world.'

The meaning conveyed in his eyes was precisely this, which Yukino found incomprehensible!

She couldn't understand what kind of organization it was, that such a project, such a mission, could be carried out!

And even carried out in another world.

This terrifying execution ability... was even more horrifying than the most extreme cults!
