Efrain slowly opens the door.
Beyond it lies an enormous chamber, far larger than the corridor they just fought through. The walls are decorated with intricate carvings, and strange black veins spread across the stone like roots. Dim purple light pulses through them.
The room is unnaturally quiet.
At the far end a man sits on an imposing chair, his hands resting on its armrests. At first glance, he looks like an ordinary human. But something about him feels wrong. His posture is unnaturally still. His skin looks pale, almost lifeless, and faint black markings creep along his neck before disappearing beneath his collar.
Two guards stand in front of his chair. They too, look human, but their eyes are empty. Dark veins run beneath their skin, and their expressions show no emotion.
Cafra: "Efrain... something's wrong with that guy."
Efrain studies the man carefully. His expression hardens.
Efrain: "That's because he's no longer entirely human."
Cafra: "What do you mean?"
Efrain: "Look at his neck. Those black markings."
The man on the chair slowly raises his head. His eyes meet theirs. For a brief moment, Cafra feels something strange pressing against his chest. It's not the overwhelming bloodlust he felt from the Aswangs. It's something colder. A feeling of hopelessness.
As though every reason to fight, every reason to keep moving forward, has suddenly become meaningless. Cafra tightens his grip on his bamboo sword. Efrain immediately notices.
Efrain: "Don't let it get inside your head."
Cafra: "Get what inside my head?"
Efrain: "Nok'tur."
The name echoes through the chamber.
Cafra looks at him.
Efrain explains that Nok'tur is the Essence of Despair, a corrupting force that can prey upon negative emotions and weaken a person's will.
The man smiles faintly.
Barangay Captain: "How interesting. Someone here knows what I am."
He slowly leans forward.
Barangay Captain: "And yet you still came all this way."
The barangay captain recognizes Cafra and Efrain as threats to his operation. He reveals that their actions have disrupted his plans. The Aswangs they defeated, the guards they've encountered, and the disturbance throughout the facility have all interfered with his work. The captain knows they have already spent much of their strength fighting the Aswangs.
Efrain: "Aren't you the barangay captain of this village? What are you doing with your people?"
Barangay Captain: "You have no idea how much trouble you've caused me."
Cafra: "Then maybe you should explain what you're doing here."
The captain chuckles.
Barangay Captain: "Explain? To two children who think they can change the world with a sword and a little fire?"
Efrain: "You're collecting something. I can feel it in these walls."
The captain's smile disappears.
Efrain: "What are you gathering?"
Barangay Captain: "Something this miserable world produces in abundance."
He slowly spreads his arms.
Barangay Captain: "Fear. Grief. Helplessness. The moment a person realizes that no one is coming to save them. That is when Nok'tur grows strongest."
Cafra realizes the significance of the prisoners. The people being held here aren't simply captives. Their suffering is being used to generate the very essence that sustains the operation. Before Cafra can demand more answers, the captain raises one hand.
Barangay Captain: "Enough. You've interfered long enough."
He gestures toward the two guards.
Barangay Captain: "Kill them."
The guards step forward. Their heads tilt at unnatural angles. Black energy spreads across their bodies. And the battle begins.
They were trained fighters before their corruption, Nok'tur hasn't merely turned them into mindless monsters. It has amplified their physical abilities while suppressing their fear and pain.
One guard specializes in close combat, fighting with enhanced strength. The other is faster, using unpredictable movements and black energy to disrupt their opponents. Together, they force Cafra and Efrain to coordinate their attacks.
Cafra initially relies on his lightning to overwhelm the faster guard. But something unusual happens. When his lightning strikes, the guard staggers without falling. Black energy spreads across the wound, holding the corrupted body together. Cafra realizes that ordinary attacks aren't enough. He needs to concentrate his electricity instead of wasting it on large, indiscriminate bursts.
Efrain's flames are effective, but the guards use coordinated attacks to keep him from landing a decisive strike. One distracts him while the other attacks from behind. Efrain must learn to anticipate their movements rather than simply reacting.
At one point, Cafra gets knocked to the ground. The faster guard raises its weapon for a finishing strike. Efrain tries to reach him, but the second guard intercepts him. For a moment, it looks as though Cafra is about to lose. Then Cafra notices something. Whenever the guards move, the black markings on their bodies brighten. The energy seems to flow from the chamber's walls into them. Their strength isn't entirely their own. They're being sustained by Nok'tur.
Cafra calls out to Efrain.
Cafra: "Efrain! The markings! Look at their bodies!"
Efrain understands.
Instead of attacking the guards directly, they begin targeting the points where the black energy gathers. Cafra uses a concentrated lightning strike to disrupt the flow of energy through one guard. Efrain follows with a precise flame attack that burns away the corrupted markings.
The guard screams as its unnatural strength collapses. The other guard becomes increasingly aggressive, but without the first one's support, its coordinated attacks falter.
Together, Cafra and Efrain defeat the remaining guard. Both collapse to one knee, breathing heavily. The chamber falls silent. For a few seconds, they think the fight is over. Then they hear slow, deliberate clapping. The barangay captain rises from his chair.
Barangay Captain: "Impressive."
Dark energy coils around his arms.
Barangay Captain: "But you still haven't understood what you've walked into."
The captain steps down from the platform. As he moves, the chamber begins to change. The black veins across the walls pulse in unison. The lights dim. Shadows stretch across the floor, converging around his feet. His human appearance begins to deteriorate. Black markings spread across his face. His eyes become dark, with a faint purple glow at their centers. His voice deepens, carrying an unnatural resonance. He is still recognizably the barangay captain, but Nok'tur has taken a much stronger hold of him. Unlike the guards, he retains his intelligence. He can speak, strategize, and deliberately exploit his opponents' weaknesses.
The Barangay captain starts to attack. He managed to separate Cafra and Efrain.
He strikes Cafra with a blast of dark energy, sending him crashing into a pillar. Efrain attempts to attack, but the captain catches his arm and throws him aside. For the first time, neither hero can immediately get back up. The captain approaches Cafra.
Barangay Captain: "Look at you. Exhausted. Injured. Barely able to stand."
Cafra struggles to rise.
Barangay Captain: "And for what? You cannot save everyone."
The words strike a nerve. Cafra remembers the people they've encountered, the visitors they've tried to protect, and the danger surrounding them.
The captain continues pressing him.
Barangay Captain: "No matter how hard you fight, someone will suffer. Someone will die. And when that happens, what will your precious strength mean?"
Cafra's lightning flickers.
For a moment, his grip loosens.
Then he hears Efrain.
Efrain: "Cafra! Don't listen to him!"
Efrain struggles to stand, his arm trembling.
Efrain: "He's trying to make you believe there's no point in fighting. Don't give him what he wants!"
Cafra: "Maybe I can't save everyone."
His sword begins to crackle with electricity.
Cafra: "But that doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying!"
His lightning flares. This is the emotional turning point of the battle. Cafra doesn't overcome despair by pretending that failure is impossible. He overcomes it by refusing to let the possibility of failure decide his actions. Efrain joins him, reigniting the flames around his dagger.
Together, they launch a coordinated attack.
Cafra disrupts the captain's dark energy with concentrated lightning, while Efrain strikes the exposed areas with his flames.
The captain fights back fiercely, but the combined assault finally overwhelms his defenses. The black markings across his body flare brightly.
He staggers.
Then the energy surrounding him begins to collapse. He falls to his knees. The chamber becomes quiet.
Cafra and Efrain have won, but they're both exhausted and injured. And the captain is still alive.
After the battle, Cafra and Efrain approach the fallen captain.
The man appears to have regained some awareness, although he remains visibly corrupted.
Cafra demands to know what happened to the people being held in the facility.
At first, the captain refuses to answer.
But when Efrain threatens to destroy the remaining corrupted energy, the captain finally reveals the truth.
He has been capturing tourists and visitors who came to the area. Some were lured in through false promises. Others were abducted. They were brought to hidden chambers beneath the facility and kept imprisoned. Their suffering produced Nok'tur. The facility's black markings, the corrupted guards, and the Aswangs were all connected to the same operation.
Cafra realizes that the people trapped here weren't merely victims of an attack. They were deliberately kept in misery to sustain a supernatural operation.
Cafra: "You did all this to innocent people?"
The captain looks away.
Barangay Captain: "You don't understand. I was promised power. Influence. A world where no one could ever look down on me again."
Efrain: "So you sacrificed innocent people for your own ambitions."
The captain doesn't respond.
Cafra: "Who promised you those things?"
The man's expression changes.
For the first time, genuine fear appears in his eyes.
Barangay Captain: "You don't understand what you're dealing with."
Efrain: "Then explain it."
The captain looks toward the ceiling, where black energy continues flowing through the walls.
Barangay Captain: "There's someone. Someone who comes here to take what we've gathered."
He hesitates before speaking the name.
Barangay Captain: "Azragon."
Cafra's: "Azragon? Who the hell is that?"
Barangay Captain: "I don't know much about him. All he gave me is his name, and the task he's given me."
The captain reveals that Azragon has been collecting the harvested Nok'tur and transporting it elsewhere for purposes the captain doesn't fully understand.
After extracting the information, Cafra and Efrain search the facility for the prisoners. They discover several locked chambers containing tourists and visitors in various conditions. Some are physically injured. Others are weak from prolonged confinement.
They begin freeing them. Visitor 1 and Visitor 2, despite their own injuries, helped guide the rescued people out.
However, the operation isn't completely over. As Cafra examines the chamber, he notices that some of the black markings are still glowing. Efrain approaches one of the walls.
Efrain: "This is strange."
Cafra: "What is?"
Efrain: "The captain has been defeated. The guards are gone. But the Nok'tur is still flowing."
They follow the energy toward a smaller chamber behind the main room.
Inside is a strange sphere, filled with concentrated dark energy. The Nok'tur is being drawn into it through channels carved into the floor. Cafra realizes that the sphere is part of the collection system. But before they can investigate further, the dark energy suddenly begins to move. It gathers into a shadowy projection.
An armored figure slowly takes shape.
Azragon.
His image is incomplete, as though he is communicating through a distant connection rather than physically appearing before them. They heroes immediately recognize the danger.
Azragon's gaze settles on Cafra.
Azragon: "You again?!"
Cafra raises his sword, despite his exhaustion.
Cafra: "You know me? Who are you!?"
The general's expression remains unreadable.
Azragon: "You've destroyed a useful asset and interrupted a collection that has taken considerable effort to establish."
Efrain steps forward.
Efrain: "Then tell us what you're planning."
Azragon lets out a low, humorless laugh.
Azragon: "You still believe that defeating one corrupted human will change anything?"
The projection begins to fade.
Azragon: "Enjoy your little victory, Cafra. The despair you've witnessed here is insignificant compared to what is coming."
His image vanishes. The chamber falls silent.
Cafra stares at the place where Azragon appeared. He has finally discovered the truth behind the operation, but the revelation leaves him with more questions than answers.
