With the Spies
"They gave each other a notebook," Cameron said.
"A notebook?" Claire asked.
"A leather notebook with initials. Very pretty," Cameron said.
"That's a couples' gift," Gloria said.
"That's an old people's gift," Haley said.
"It's a gift from people who love each other," Cameron said.
"And now what are they doing?" Claire asked.
"They're... holding hands," Cameron said.
"Nothing else?" Haley asked.
"What else do you want them to do?" Claire asked.
"I don't know. Something more exciting," Haley said.
"Like kissing," Gloria said.
"Gloria!" Claire said.
"What? It's the truth. Young people kiss," Gloria said.
"Not my daughter," Claire said.
"Your daughter has already kissed. For sure," Gloria said.
"How do you know?" Claire asked.
"Because I saw her when she came back from the movies. Her lips were shiny, and she had a grin from ear to ear," Gloria said.
"And you didn't tell me anything?" Claire asked.
"I thought you knew," Gloria said.
"How was I supposed to know?" Claire asked.
"Because mothers know these things," Gloria said.
"I don't know these things," Claire said.
"That's why I'm helping you," Gloria said.
With Alex and Leo
"Can I ask you something?" I said.
"Sure," Alex replied.
"Why did you say yes? When I asked you to be my girlfriend," I asked.
Alex thought for a moment.
"Because I'm not scared anymore," Alex said.
"Of what?" I asked.
"Of you hurting me. Abandoning me. Getting tired of me," Alex said.
"And why aren't you scared?" I asked.
"Because you taught me that waiting isn't bad. That being still isn't being dead. That silence isn't emptiness," Alex said.
"That's very cheesy," I said.
"I know," Alex said.
"It's okay. It can be cheesy sometimes," I said.
Alex leaned in. She kissed me. It wasn't a quick kiss. It was a slow, deep, meaningful kiss.
When we pulled apart, her cheeks were red and her eyes were shining.
"That was definitely cheesy," I said.
"That was love," Alex replied.
With the Spies
"They kissed," Cameron said.
"How was it?" Gloria asked.
"Slow. Soft. Like in the movies," Cameron said.
"Can we see it on the camera?" Haley asked.
"Sure, but it's for the wedding, not for gossip," Cameron said.
"Everything is for the wedding," Haley said with irony.
"Everything is for love," Cameron corrected.
Haley fell silent. She looked toward the blanket, where Alex and Leo were still holding hands.
"Dylan never made me a picnic," Haley said quietly.
"What?" Claire asked.
"Dylan never cut fruit into star shapes for me. Never gave me a notebook with my initials. Never looked at me the way Leo looks at Alex," Haley said.
"And how does he look at her?" Gloria asked.
"Like she's the only person in the world," Haley replied.
"That's love," Gloria said.
"That's envy," Claire said.
"It's both," Cameron said.
"Why do you always say that?" Haley asked.
"Because it's true," Cameron replied.
Haley looked toward the blanket again.
"I want someone to look at me like that," Haley said.
"Someone will look at you like that," Claire said.
"When?" Haley asked.
"When you stop looking for guys who play guitar and start looking for guys who cut fruit into star shapes," Claire replied.
"That's very specific," Haley said.
"That's very wise," Gloria said.
"That's very motherly," Cameron said.
"All three," Haley said.
Everyone smiled.
With Alex and Leo
The sun was beginning to set. The breeze grew cooler. Alex and I were packing up the blanket.
"Did you like it?" I asked.
"I liked it," Alex replied.
"The star-shaped fruit?" I asked.
"The fruit, the notebook, the kiss. Everything," Alex said.
"Even the cheesy parts?" I asked.
"Even the cheesy parts," Alex replied.
"That's very cheesy," I said.
"I know," Alex said.
We walked toward the park exit. On the path, I saw a bush moving. I didn't pay it any attention. It must have been the wind.
Or maybe not.
With the Spies
Claire, Gloria, Cameron, and Haley came out of the bush covered in leaves and twigs.
"That was exciting," Cameron said.
"That was exhausting," Claire said.
"That was necessary," Gloria said.
"That was pathetic," Haley said.
"All four," Cameron said.
"Can you stop saying that?" Haley asked.
"When it stops being true," Cameron replied.
They walked toward the car. Claire was driving. Gloria in the passenger seat. Cameron and Haley in the back.
"Do you think they'll last?" Haley asked.
"Who?" Claire asked.
"Alex and Leo," Haley said.
"They're going to last," Gloria said.
"How do you know?" Haley asked.
"Because I saw them. Wait. Grow. Choose each other," Gloria said.
"That's very poetic," Cameron said.
"That's very Colombian," Gloria said.
"It's both," Cameron said.
"Can you stop saying that?" Haley asked again.
"No," Cameron replied.
Haley sighed. She looked out the window. She saw Alex and Leo walking toward Phil's car. How Leo opened the door for her. How Alex smiled.
"I want that," Haley said quietly.
"You'll have it," Claire said.
"When?" Haley asked.
"When you're ready," Claire replied.
"What if I'm never ready?" Haley asked.
"Then you'll be alone. But not sad. Because being alone isn't the same as being sad," Claire said.
"That's very deep," Cameron said.
"That's very Claire," Gloria said.
"It's both," Haley said.
Everyone laughed.
