While Shiraishi's current development of combined techniques seemed independent on the surface, he was being subtly reshaped by Asura's ancient theories of Ninshu.
The silver Magnet Release, born from the Treasure Gathering Art, possessed incredible plasticity and creative potential.
"A fascinating technique," Asura said, his eyes lighting up with interest. "Let me test its mettle."
With a casual flick of his wrist, Asura unleashed a powerful Wood Release jutsu.
The trees surrounding him groaned and twisted, instantly forming a small Wood Dragon with a long, hooked nose and thorn-covered scales. It lunged forward, seeking to coil around Shiraishi.
Magnet Release: Silver Sand Defense!
The silver sand surged, forming a perfect sphere around Shiraishi. Simultaneously, the magnetic field began to oscillate violently.
The resulting magnetic "shears" were so sharp they sliced off the tip of the Wood Dragon's snout in an instant.
The first strike failed, but Asura was far from finished. Possessing a Wood Release even more potent than that of the future First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, Asura quickly gauged the defensive limits of Shiraishi's silver sand. His next move was like a thunderclap.
The Wood Dragon's nose regrew instantly as it opened its maw, firing a sphere of condensed energy. As the projectile traveled, it combined with the surrounding air to form a massive, swirling vortex of pressure.
Is that...?!
It was a technique strikingly similar in principle to the Tailed Beast Bomb—a unique, hand-sign-less orb of destruction.
While Minato Namikaze would spend years developing the Rasengan in the future, Asura had mastered this "Sphere Art" a millennium ago to repel his brother, Indra.
The sheer tearing force of the vortex shredded through Shiraishi's silver sand defenses. Seeing his static defense failing, Shiraishi shifted tactics.
He commanded the silver sand to draw metallic essence from the ground, manifesting a pair of gargantuan silver hands that reached out to crush the Wood Dragon.
Magnet Release: Hands of Silver Sand!
However, before the hands could close, dozens of smaller energy spheres rained down from above.
Shiraishi manifested multiple Silver Sand Shields in the sky, blocking the bombardment with precision, but each impact sent a shudder through his meridians. Asura's offensive was relentless.
Yet, despite the pressure, Asura was holding back, using the agile Wood Dragon to test Shiraishi's reflexes and force him to adapt.
He was accelerating Shiraishi's mastery over this unique form of Magnet Release. Compared to traditional sand, the silver sand was faster, more durable, and capable of much more intricate shaping.
This Wood Dragon is essentially an extension of Asura's will, Shiraishi realized. It's his chakra made manifest.
Magnet Release: Silver Sand Drizzle!
Shiraishi switched forms again. The silver sand dissolved into millions of microscopic needles, launched from all directions toward Asura.
The Wood Dragon roared, exhaling a massive blast of wind that shattered the incoming needles into dust.
But Magnet Release was not so easily destroyed. The shattered silver dust reformed in mid-air, piercing through the Wood Dragon's body.
After a series of high-intensity exchanges, Shiraishi was beginning to tire. The fact that Asura could push him this far with just a single Wood Dragon summon illustrated the staggering gap between them.
"Haha! You won't catch up to me in a few days," Asura laughed, though a flicker of "sand-like" erosion appeared on his arm, which he quickly hid.
After a thousand years, this remnant of his chakra was finally reaching its limit. He had originally planned to wait for his official reincarnation, but seeing Shiraishi here, he felt that fate had offered him one last chance to pass on his legacy.
With a simple seal, Asura restored the surrounding environment to its original state, showcasing his absolute mastery over natural vitality.
"The development of techniques is about finding what fits you," Asura advised. "Every attribute must be integrated.
Your Magnet Release is your primary Ninjutsu, your Wind Style should be fused with your swordsmanship, and your Blue Flames are your unconventional trump card."
As for Genjutsu, Asura wasn't a master of it—his immense life force and Sage Body made him naturally immune to most mental interference—but he had specific plans for Shiraishi's mental training.
"Next... comes your final trial."
Asura looked at the rapidly progressing young man and smiled, leading him toward the absolute core of the forest.
Watching them leave, the tubby orange cat let out a worried mewl. Having spent a millennium by Asura's side, it felt a sudden, heavy sense of foreboding.
Big Brother Asura... please don't leave me behind...
The West Coast of the Land of Wind
Following the battle at Kikyo Mountain, the Hidden Sand had fortified its defenses against the Mist. The Arakawa and Yamaji clans had been redeployed to garrison the western coastline.
"Father, a secret letter from the Kazekage."
Arakawa Maru stepped forward cautiously, handing a scroll delivered by a messenger hawk to his father, Arakawa Akita.
Akita had been in high spirits lately. His partnership with Shiraishi in the explosive tag trade had brought the family immense wealth. However, as he read the Kazekage's secret orders, his expression soured, turning pale and strained.
"Father?"
"The Kazekage has lost his mind..." Akita whispered. He hadn't expected Rasa to be so desperate as to use the Hidden Mist to dismantle the Elder Faction's power.
"I am feeling unwell lately," Akita announced suddenly. "I cannot oversee the West Coast defenses. I recommend Yamaji Ryōko to take over my post."
Arakawa Maru was baffled. Seeing his son's confusion, Akita tossed him the scroll. "Tell me what you think."
"Isn't this... a great chance to eliminate the Elder Faction's influence?" Maru asked.
"Idiot!" Akita barked, smacking his son with the scroll. "What if it fails? The Arakawa clan will not be the 'blade' in someone else's hand. Let Yamaji Ryōko deal with this mess."
To Akita's surprise, Yamaji Ryōko also refused the post, claiming she was too young for such a heavy responsibility. Instead, she recommended an elite jonin from the Ro family—Rasa's own clan—to take the position.
When Akita heard this, he was stunned. Since when did Yamaji Ryōko get so smart? Why pass up a chance to hurt Shiraishi?
But upon reflection, Yamaji Ryōko had changed since the "Night of the Coup." She was calmer, her hatred for Shiraishi now buried under a layer of cold calculation. She wasn't looking for a quick strike; she was looking for a fatal opening.
Rasa, hearing that both the Arakawa and Yamaji clans were playing "fence-sitter," was furious. Akita was faking illness, and Ryōko was being uncharacteristically humble. It was frustrating, but at least his own kinsman now held the post. The orders were carried out, and the defense forces were redeployed, leaving the coast exposed.
As Yamaji Ryōko began her journey back toward the village, she looked back at the shifting troops and sneered.
Does Rasa think I'm brain-dead? She thought. Under normal circumstances, I'd love to help kill Shiraishi. But the Mist is invading.
If the Yamaji family helps you sell out the village, you'll just turn around and 'clean up the mess' to look like a hero. Dream on.
As for you, Black Mist Shiraishi... let's see if you have the power to survive this 'gift' the Kazekage has prepared for you.
The Core of the Forest
Deep within the Forest of Asura, a mysterious black rod stood vertically in the center of a massive ritual array. The ground was covered in dense, pulsing seal formulas that radiated an overwhelming sense of dread.
A pitch-black, malevolent chakra was churning beneath the earth, surging against the seal like a trapped beast.
As Shiraishi and Asura stepped into the area, the ground groaned, and the atmosphere grew suffocatingly heavy.
"This," Asura said, his voice grave, "is your final training ground."
