Chapter 131: Nemesis Appears
Perhaps due to good timing, the group didn't encounter any more infected hordes or Cerberus hounds after leaving the school.
They stopped to rest in a relatively open, flat area.
Angela, being a child, secured one of the only two available seats, while L.J. shamelessly claimed the other.
Alice stared at Angela for a while, then suddenly said, "She's infected. Heavily infected."
Before anyone could react, L.J., sitting next to Angela, let out a yelp and scrambled away.
He was completely ignored.
"How did you know?" Jill glanced disdainfully at L.J., then looked at Alice and asked.
Angela's eyes remained fixed on Alice. "Because she was too."
"You were infected too. When were you going to tell us?"
This demonstrated how women could hold grudges. Jill still remembered what Alice had said after Peyton was bitten. Although Peyton eventually turned, she still remembered those words.
Alice smiled slightly, ignoring Jill's accusatory tone, and turned to Angela. "Let me see."
"No," the little girl refused.
"You know I won't hurt you," Alice crouched down to Angela's eye level and said gently. "Let me see."
Her demeanor persuaded the little girl.
Rolling up Angela's sleeve, Alice saw numerous injection marks on her arm. She opened Angela's backpack and found a medical case inside.
It was full of T-virus antivirus!
"Where did you get these?"
"My dad. My dad made them for me," Angela said, slightly flustered. She seemed to understand that her current situation was connected to the drug her father had created for her.
"He's sick, and one day I'll get sick too," she tried to explain. "He just wanted to prevent it from happening. When I was little, I needed leg braces to walk."
"The doctors said my condition wouldn't improve, only get worse. He found a way to make me stronger."
"The T-virus," Alice murmured softly.
Angela continued, "Then they took his invention." She was defending her father. "He's not a bad person. He didn't want this to happen."
"It's okay," Alice hugged the little girl tightly, offering comfort.
Suddenly, a retching sound broke the tender moment.
Alice reflexively drew her weapon and pointed it toward the sound.
Her gun was aimed at Carlos, the sole survivor of the U.B.C.S. team.
"When were you bitten?" Alice asked seriously. Judging from her stance, if Carlos couldn't give a satisfactory explanation, she would definitely shoot.
"Two hours ago."
Depending on individual physiology and luck, two hours was already pushing into dangerous territory.
Alice didn't want to give up on anyone easily. "Congratulations, today's your lucky day!"
The handsome soldier with strong features still didn't understand what was happening.
At this moment, L.J., who had just run away from Angela and taken refuge next to Carlos, let out another yelp and bolted again.
He looked around wildly, realizing that almost everyone present was potentially dangerous, and finally focused his attention on Jake, who hadn't spoken yet, and stood next to him with a nervous smile.
"You're not infected, are you?" L.J. asked.
"No."
"That's good, that's good. You haven't introduced yourself yet. You can call me L.J."
Jake nodded. He didn't dislike this rather comedic character, so he casually chatted with him.
After talking with the nervous survivor for a while, when Jake turned his attention back to Alice, Carlos had already finished administering the antivirus.
After resting, everyone prepared to move out, when the phone nearby rang again.
Alice answered it.
The conversation was brief, and Jake didn't concern himself with the details. His next objective was to find Dr. Ashford, negotiate terms, and convince him to work for him.
As for whether Dr. Ashford would refuse?
He couldn't think of a reason why. He had leverage that Dr. Ashford couldn't refuse—like a world without the undead.
After agreeing on the rendezvous point, the group set off again, heading toward City Hall.
The last extraction helicopter would be leaving in 47 minutes.
They had to reach it before then.
"One, two, three, four..."
In front of City Hall, Jake raised his right index finger to count. "Ten total."
"We'll split into two teams. There's one with a sniper rifle up there. You'll draw their attention," Jake said to Alice. "Then I'll take them out."
Knowing Jake's combat abilities, Alice didn't hesitate and nodded in agreement...
Far above on the City Hall rooftop, hundreds of feet high, the sniper watched an interesting scene unfold below through his scope.
The woman had skillfully taken down two guards, then rushed toward the building boldly.
"Is that all you've got? You think you can escape by helicopter?"
The sniper chuckled to himself, aiming for the woman's head to deliver a clean kill, when suddenly everything went black.
Jake released his grip, tossing the sniper—stunned by an elbow strike—to the ground.
With his anti-gravity mode engaged, even from the high vantage point, the hundred-meter distance was nothing—he could cover it in less than ten seconds.
After easily neutralizing the sniper, Jake didn't hesitate; he leaped directly off the building!
A hundred meters—even peak human athletes would be killed by such a fall.
Jill and the others, watching from concealment, almost cried out; they'd never seen anyone so reckless.
But their fear quickly turned to astonishment.
Jake jumped, then defied gravity itself, landing on the smooth glass wall and beginning to run down it!
Without any safety equipment, he ran as if on flat ground!
With the ground almost within reach, just ten feet from the surface, Jake suddenly pushed off the glass wall, deactivated his anti-gravity mode, and delivered a devastating kick to a guard below.
The guard, completely unprepared for an attack from above, was knocked unconscious instantly.
The others were equally shocked, not expecting anyone to literally fall from the sky. In that brief moment of stunned silence, Jake swiftly incapacitated them.
Two nearby guards noticed the commotion and raised their weapons to fire.
Jake flicked his wrists, sending two pistols spinning through the air to strike the guards' weapon hands precisely. He then sprinted forward, leaping high to catch the pistols mid-air.
As he closed on the guards, he brought both pistols down hard with both hands!
The reinforced grips shattered the guards' tactical helmets instantly!
Jake then took advantage of their dazed state to apply sleeper holds, rendering them unconscious.
Meanwhile, Alice successfully reached the helicopter, eliminating the guards stationed there with a display of skill no less impressive than Jake's.
The group quickly boarded the aircraft. Alice stepped forward and pointed a pistol at the pilot, commanding, "Take off! Take off now!"
Despite being at gunpoint, the pilot showed no fear.
Just then, L.J.'s voice rang out, "Oh shit! We just stole their ride!"
"I said take off now!" Alice, already sensing something was wrong, raised her voice.
The pilot turned around with a questioning look.
A sense of dread washed over Alice.
"What's the rush?" Major Timothy Cain had appeared behind Alice unnoticed, while everyone else had been surrounded at gunpoint by Umbrella security forces.
"We've been waiting for you."
Jake was escorted into position with his hands raised. This was part of his plan; leaving without dealing with Nemesis seemed unrealistic.
However, upon being forced from the helicopter, his eyes widened in genuine shock.
Nemesis was indeed waiting for them—but not just one.
There were two!
