Chapter 17 - The Architect of the Doom

Humanity's fear of fellow humans... That was how he was born. He is a manifestation of humanity's negative emotions toward itself—a "Disaster Curse" embodying the human condition and the soul. While most Curses are driven by primal instincts, Mahito is highly intellectual and philosophical. He considers Curses to be the "true" humans because they act on their rawest desires without the hypocrisy or social constraints that humans use to hide their dark nature. He is the oldest Curse alive, having been around since what humans call the Golden Era of Jujutsu.

Though he underwent a Binding Vow that currently restricts his movements, he was the individual responsible for ending that Golden Era. Yes... he was the one who caused it. "The Doom," as the humans so aptly named it.

Ever since Mahito was born, he has been a Special Grade. However, among the monsters of the Golden Era, he was just another Cursed Spirit to be exorcised. He had been humiliated in a fight with the strongest Sorcerer of that time; his comrades died, and he barely managed to escape with his life intact. He understood then that he would not be able to defeat them with brute force... so he made sure that monsters like that were never born again—at least, until now.

Mahito is deeply philosophical regarding the concept of souls. He believes the human soul existed before the body and is intrigued by its nature. His cursed technique, Idle Transfiguration, is derived from this obsession. He has no sympathy for humans and places little value even on his own life. He is devoted to the cause; as long as Cursed Spirits eventually reign supreme, Mahito does not care if he is there to see it.

When Mahito caused "The Doom," he underwent two massive Binding Vows:

The First: In exchange for restricting his movements to a specified one-mile radius, the physical restriction on his Cursed Technique was lifted. Through this vow, he can use Idle Transfiguration remotely without physically touching his target.

The Second: Because his range was still not satisfactory for his plans, he went against his very nature. In exchange for never "harming" humans using Idle Transfiguration, his technique's range reached a global scale.

Both Binding Vows took hold. From then on, Mahito used Idle Transfiguration to adjust the brain and body structure of all newborns—whether natural-born sorcerers or not—to ensure they could not harness cursed energy. Under the Second Binding Vow, "harm" is defined as using Idle Transfiguration to shorten a human's lifespan or change them into Transfigured Humans. Since changing the physical chemistry of the brain to prevent the use of a Cursed Technique does neither of those things, he is not in violation of the vow.

He remotely activated these changes over the previous millennia. Normally, "Cursed Technique Removal" involves the forced extraction of an innate technique, which acts as a death sentence. Because techniques are engraved in the brain, removing them causes fatal damage, effectively killing the sorcerer. This is why Mahito applies his technique only to newborns, as sorcerers born with an innate technique typically see it manifest around the age of five or six.

A Binding Vow is a powerful contract made with oneself or another, using cursed energy to trade a restriction for a significant power-up—an "equivalent exchange." Mahito, in exchange for never using his technique to "harm" a human, was able to cast his technique worldwide. He believed that through this sacrifice, Cursed Spirits would finally reign supreme in about a century, but he underestimated human tenacity.

Agamotto was able to connect with a dimensional being and thwart his plans, but no matter; the Sorcerer Society has been on the decline ever since "The Doom." Sooner or later, Cursed Spirits will take their place as the "true humans." At least, that is what he thought until a natural sorcerer was born... Mahito did not know how this human wretch escaped his vision as a newborn, as not even the Sorcerer Supreme could do it.

But it happened, and that sorcerer had to be dealt with. The technique was too dangerous. Atlas Orian, a predecessor of the Ten Shadows Technique, still haunts his nightmares. And so, Mahito observed him for years since he killed Delgour, watching as he grew stronger and killed fellow Cursed Spirits. Mahito's blood boiled, but he calmed himself; he had to play it smart.

Being alive for millennia had taught him many things, including complex barrier techniques. He has been able to completely erase his cursed energy signature using these seals and has assisted his fellow Special Grades with their Domain Expansions and barrier knowledge. He contacted his fellow spirits and set up the perfect trap for Ethan Park.

He lured Ethan into his specified radius. With Lex's Domain, they confiscated his technique. Now, Jogo—using the Executioner's Sword—only has to land one hit for it to be over. Hanami will provide support by stripping Ethan's will to fight, while Mahito himself protects Lex, knowing Ethan Park will target the Law Spirit first to reclaim his Cursed Technique.

Mahito cannot use Idle Transfiguration on humans with the intent to harm due to his Binding Vow, yet he remains the strongest Cursed Spirit alive simply based on his cursed energy reserves, which rival almost 75% of Park's. All his fellow spirits knew there was a gap in their strength based on his energy alone.

Ethan's predicament is classic JJK. He did the "right" thing by stopping the planes on 9/11, but the Court of Convection does not care about utilitarian ethics; it cares about the letter of the California Penal Code. This makes the domain a hard counter to "heroes" who have blood on their hands.

The Disaster Curses, Ethan thought. The embodiments of human fear toward the earth, the forest, and humanity itself. This wasn't just a trap set by a weak Special Grade. The Law Cursed Spirit was just the bailiff. These three are the executioners.

"Hahaha... You have intrigued me now, Cursed Spirits... Come," Ethan whispered, the word a challenge to the very concepts of Earth, Forest, and Man. "Let's see if the law can actually protect you from me."

Jogo snatched the hilt of the Executioner's Sword, his single eye widening with sadistic glee. The heat radiating from his head increased instantly, turning the asphalt beneath his feet into a viscous liquid. "A blade that kills on contact? You've done well, vermin," Jogo spat, his gaze locking onto Ethan. Mahito had told them they would not be able to defeat this human alone. Jogo had protested, of course, but then he had seen the recordings of Ethan's fights—especially that Tiger Shikigami. Jogo knew he couldn't win a battle of domains, but landing one hit... that should be possible, right?

Hanami did not give Ethan a second to process. With a silent wave of its wooden arms, the ground exploded. Thick, cursed roots—reinforced with enough energy to crush a tank—erupted like geysers, weaving together to form a cage around Ethan. This was not meant to kill him; it was meant to narrow his lanes of attack. Ethan saw the dome of roots forming but did not change his relaxed position. His main focus was on Mahito. Ethan watched Mahito's approach. He did not know about the Binding Vows. To him, those hands represented Idle Transfiguration—and though the Ancient One had told him he could instinctively protect his soul, he did not want to experience it.

He has to kill that Law Cursed Spirit first. It will remove the Executioner's Sword from the equation and return his technique. Mahito was going to act as the guardian, while Jogo with the sword and Hanami with its roots acted as offense and defense respectively.

He was in the center of a storm of fire, wood, and transfiguration, stripped of his powers, facing the ultimate "Sure-Kill" weapon. Ethan landed on a stray root, his eyes cold and focused. He did not look at Jogo. He looked at Lex Mortis, who was hiding behind Mahito's bulk.

"Three against one, a cursed sword, and a cage," Ethan muttered, his voice a low growl. "You guys really are terrified of me."

This situation also presented an opportunity: to kill three Disaster Curses in one go. Ethan would not let it pass. If they were the "True Humans," then he would have to show them what a "Monster" looked like. If he couldn't touch the sword, then he'd make them hit each other with it.
