Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Night of Disbandment (Part One)

Keith opened the roster of the 104th Training Corps. The detailed records of all 218 trainees were listed inside. On the first page of the roster were the top ten trainees of the 104th.

(A/N: The following character introductions—I thought about it for a bit and decided to write them anyway. Mainly to help everyone recall them again. It's absolutely not because I want to pad the word count! Definitely not! (?o?o?))

10th Place: Sasha Braus

Closing the roster, night had already fallen. Above the training camp, torches clearly illuminated the faces of all 218 trainees.

Led by Yago, the top ten trainees stood at the very front of the formation. They were the most outstanding trainees of the 104th, and only they were qualified to choose whether to join the glory-filled Military Police.

"Dedicate your hearts!" With a loud shout from the instructor, all 218 trainees clenched their fists, placed them over their left chests, and shouted in unison, "Dedicate your hearts!"

"I am proud of you. From today onward, you will become true soldiers and dedicate your hearts to humanity!" Instructor Keith said with his hands behind his back. After speaking, Instructor Keith stepped back, and another instructor stepped forward to introduce things to everyone.

"After graduating from the Training Corps today, you have three choices. Join the Garrison, which is responsible for reinforcing the walls and protecting the cities. Or join the Survey Corps, who risk their lives to enter Titan territory. And finally, join the Military Police, who serve the king and are responsible for supervising the populace and maintaining order. Of course, only the top ten trainees have the right to choose the Military Police."

Immediately, all eyes turned toward the ten figures standing at the front. Gazes filled with envy, jealousy, and regret swept over the ten of them, one by one.

The thoughts of the ten were also different. Most wore proud expressions, filled with longing for the comfortable life inside the inner territories after joining the Military Police.

Eren, however, wore an expression of determination. His hatred for Titans and his yearning for freedom meant that he would definitely join the Survey Corps.

Mikasa's choice could naturally be ignored. Everyone knew that wherever Eren went, Mikasa would follow. It had to be said that Mikasa's feelings for Eren made many people somewhat jealous—Jean, for example. Even though joining the Military Police made him very happy, the moment he thought about his ranking being below Eren's, Jean ground his teeth in anger.

Unfortunately, Eren truly didn't know how blessed he was, nor did he cherish Mikasa's feelings. Perhaps only when he was about to truly lose them would he learn to treasure them.

...

Yago's face was expressionless, but there was an indescribable feeling in his eyes. Of course, his original intention to join the Survey Corps had never changed. Whether for the sake of his own secrets or the trust Vige had shown him back then, Yago would join the Survey Corps to fight for humanity without hesitation. However, the conversation with Commander Pixis that day felt like a thorn lodged deep in Yago's heart.

Indeed, putting himself in Pixis's position, if Yago were the commander, he too would harbor doubts about a powerful soldier of unknown origin. The logic made sense, but truly experiencing the feeling of being suspected still made Yago deeply uncomfortable.

However, from a certain perspective, Commander Pixis's guess wasn't entirely wrong. Yago now suspected that he himself was not a native of within the walls, because the white lab coat in his memories didn't resemble the style inside the walls at all.

The vague memories of a "transmigrator" reminded him that he might have been modified by a mad scientist, which was why he possessed the power of Titans. But where did Titans actually come from?

How did that person in the white lab coat master the ability to turn humans into Titans? And in his memories, that person had called him a failure—so what, then, was the successful product?

The more he thought about it, the gloomier Yago's gaze became. He didn't even realize when the instructor announced dismissal. In the end, it was Thomas Wagner who nudged the dazed Yago, snapping him back to his senses.

...

Tonight, the trainees were free to revel as much as they wanted. The mess hall even provided some alcohol and roasted meat. Sasha was overjoyed, and the graduating trainees celebrated together in the dining hall.

Only, no one noticed that three figures swept past through the darkness.
