Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Historia’s Secret

Historia dragged Daz along, and suddenly, with one careless step, she slipped and fell into the snow. Ymir hurriedly helped her back up.

"Huff, huff, thank you, Ymir." Historia's small face was frozen red, and she thanked Ymir with visible exhaustion.

Ymir really didn't know what to say about this girl. Clearly her own stamina was poor, yet she still insisted on dragging along dead weight. The key point was that Ymir herself was right there, yet Historia stubbornly refused her help.

Ymir was just about to say something when a sound suddenly came from the mountainside, startling both of them. They looked up to see an avalanche rushing toward them with terrifying momentum.

"Historia!" Ymir cried out and immediately wrapped her arms around Historia. Luckily, the avalanche was more frightening in appearance than in reality. By the time it reached them, it had already lost its force, merely knocking the two of them down. Daz, who had already been half-unconscious on the stretcher, was also flipped over.

Pulling Historia out of the snowdrift and patting the snow off her, Ymir spoke to her with a rare seriousness on her face.

"That's enough! Historia, you're not trying to save Daz at all, are you? You're just trying to die, aren't you?"

Historia froze, her expression turning unnatural.

"Ymir, w-what are you talking about?"

Ymir moved her face close to Historia's, facing her directly.

"You want to die here, don't you? Historia, I always thought you were a good girl. How could you do this? At the very least, you should act the part—pretend like you're actually trying to save Daz."

Historia's eyes widened, her small mouth slightly open. Ymir continued whispering into her ear.

"You want to become a hero? Make everyone think you died saving someone? Then you shouldn't drag Daz along to die with you. That's something only bad girls do."

"No! That's not it! I really just wanted to save Daz!" Historia retorted excitedly, tears already shimmering in her eyes.

"Why deny it? So, Historia, you're that illegitimate daughter who was being hunted down, right?" Ymir said with certainty.

Historia froze. "How did you know?"

Ymir said, "So it really was you. I only overheard it by chance. Back then I was in a church, surviving by stealing here and there. How ironic—your noble father wanted to kill his own illegitimate daughter to prevent her from inheriting power. Later, they agreed that if the girl was willing to change her name and live under a new identity, they'd spare her. They planned to send her to the training corps."

Historia's expression dimmed. This was something she had always been unwilling to face.

"So you came to the training corps to find me? If that's true… why?" As she spoke, Historia looked at Ymir with a hint of hope in her eyes.

Stared at by Historia like that, Ymir's face turned slightly red, though it wasn't very noticeable.

"Why? Maybe… because we're alike."

Historia said, "Alike? Do you have the same background as me?"

Ymir said, "What? More or less… no, that's not right. We're not the same. We can't be compared at all. We both got a second life, but I didn't change my name. If I changed my name, wouldn't that prove I was afraid? I want to keep my name! Live the best life possible. Only then can I get my revenge!" As Ymir spoke, a trace of hatred appeared on her face.

"And you? Historia, what are you trying to do? Die here in a pathetic suicide, letting the people who ruined your life laugh in secret? If that's really the case, why not use this passion to live properly!" Ymir harshly questioned Historia.

Historia was clearly at a loss.

"I—I don't know. I can't do it. And now… we might all die here. Wuwuwu." As she spoke, Historia began to sob softly.

Seeing this, Ymir couldn't help but feel a bit reluctant. After thinking for a moment, she seemed to make up her mind.

"There's a way. Come with me."

Historia wiped her tears and dragged Daz along as she followed. They came to the edge of a cliff. Ymir pointed down and said,

"Below the cliff is the camp. Right now there's only one way—throw Daz down. Whether he lives or dies will be up to fate. Unless a miracle happens, otherwise you and Daz will both turn into popsicles!"

Historia said, "No! If he falls, Daz will definitely die!"

Ymir said, "Shut up, you're too noisy. I'll handle it. You move, now!" Ymir grabbed Historia, lifted her up, and threw her toward the snowdrift on the back slope.

"Ymir, don't!" Historia struggled, but it was completely useless. She was flung straight into the snowdrift.

Ymir turned and walked toward Daz. A streak of yellow lightning flashed past.

...

Historia crawled out of the snowdrift, only to find that Ymir and Daz were already gone.

Just as Historia was completely confused, she suddenly felt a tremor beneath her feet. Crash! The snowdrift seemed to be pushed up by something. Unable to keep her balance, Historia fell hard onto the ground, letting out a cry of pain.

Historia raised her head, and a pair of enormous crimson eyes stared straight at her. Black hair was matted with chunks of snow. A huge mouth big enough to fit two Historias, filled with dense, terrifying sharp teeth—a giant's head was staring right at her.

"Ah!!!" Historia let out a piercing scream.

The giant seemed startled.

"Roar!!" An even more terrifying roar frightened Historia so badly that she turned and ran. Then—bang! In her panic, Historia crashed headfirst into a large tree and was knocked unconscious on the spot.

Even the giant seemed stunned by this turn of events, standing completely still. Then, the giant lowered its entire head. Steam billowed out, and from the nape of its neck, a figure burst forth, tearing through flesh and blood.

Yago broke free from the giant's body, gasping for air. He clenched his fists, feeling a power several times stronger than before surge through him.

As he stepped out of the giant's body, the giant began to evaporate. Vast clouds of steam melted the surrounding snow, and the blood and viscous fluid on Yago's padded coat also began to evaporate.

Yago looked at the unconscious Historia. In truth, he himself was somewhat bewildered. Buried by the avalanche, he had been unconscious for a while, and when he finally lifted his head, the first thing he saw was Historia.

...

In her haze, Historia suddenly opened her eyes.

"There's a giant!!"

"What nonsense are you talking about, Historia?" Regaining her senses, Historia realized she was being carried on someone's back. The one carrying her was Yago.

"Yago? Why are you here? And I just saw a giant! Hiss, my head hurts so much!"

Yago said, "What giant? Historia, did you knock yourself out? When I saw you, you were lying face-down in a snowdrift. As for me? I got lost at first. I only just found the way."

Historia looked confused.

"What? So I really did knock myself out?"

Yago carried Historia and quickly returned to the camp.

...

In the camp—

"Annie, Reiner, are we really going to secretly go search for Yago and the others without telling the instructor?" Marco asked hesitantly.

Annie silently put on her padded coat. Reiner fastened his gear. Eren and Mikasa were already ready to set out, along with Thomas, Mina, Ilse…

Ymir stood at the camp entrance, looking anxious. Daz was currently wrapped in blankets, shivering.

"What's going on? Why hasn't Historia come back yet?" Ymir was clearly starting to panic.

Finally, just as everyone was about to depart, two figures appeared before them. Yago, carrying Historia on his back, walked toward the camp step by step.

Historia waved to everyone.

"Hey! You bastard, don't think about taking advantage of Historia!" Ymir charged toward Yago like a hundred-meter sprint, snatching the petite Historia down from his back and glaring at Yago warily.

"I'm fine, Ymir. Don't misunderstand Yago. Where's Daz?"

Ymir carefully checked Historia's clothes and replied casually,

"In the room, drinking soup." Historia wanted to ask more, but the many companions had already crowded around.

They were still very worried about Yago's and Historia's safety. As Yago rubbed his nose and boasted about how difficult it had been to carry Historia back, he suddenly felt a chill. Turning his head, he saw Annie's beautiful blue eyes staring at him.

Yago's heart skipped a beat.

This is bad.
