Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Road of the Future

"Ow! Was that really necessary, Annie?" Yago rubbed his chest. Annie's punch had landed solidly on him just now. He had thought she was just a small girl—no matter how strong she was, how much force could she really have?

But when Annie's fist hit him, Yago realized just how wrong he was. This girl was genuinely strong. Maybe not as exaggerated as Yago himself, but definitely stronger than the average adult. Yes, an adult. Thankfully Yago's body was tough enough—if it were someone else, like Armin, that punch would probably have kept him in bed for a week.

There was still a faint blush on Annie's small face, not very noticeable under the sunset.

Yago watched as Annie slowly tied her hair back into a bun. He suddenly had the strange feeling that he could tie her hair for her too. It was odd. Every time he was with Annie, everything felt odd. Could this be what they called fate?

"Annie, after we graduate, which regiment do you plan to join? I feel like your results definitely won't be bad," Yago asked, sounding casual.

Annie: "Which regiment? Probably the Military Police. Isn't everyone envious of life in the inner districts? What about you?"

Hearing Annie's answer, Yago felt an emptiness inside. So she longed for life in the Military Police.

"Me? I decided a long time ago to join the Survey Corps. It's fine if you go to the Military Police—at least it's safer there....."

Disappointment seeped uncontrollably into Yago's eyes, and Annie naturally noticed. It was getting late. Annie stood up, and Eren and the others were also preparing to leave. Yago hesitantly scratched his head.

"Actually, the Survey Corps isn't bad either. Brave soldiers fighting Titans—it sounds pretty cool,"

Annie said to Yago as she was leaving. Yago's eyes lit up.

"Yeah, the Survey Corps are all great, they @#$amp;amp;%" Yago rambled on incoherently, probably not even knowing himself what he was talking about.

Deep down, Yago didn't want to be separated from Annie at all, even if it was in the Survey Corps. It wasn't that Yago was selfish—he..... If Annie really did join the Survey Corps, Yago swore that before he himself fell, he would never let anything happen to Annie.

The short rest days were about to end. Yago lay on his bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, his mind filled entirely with Annie.

"What's wrong with me? Am I possessed? This is so annoying!"

...

"Drip, drip." Water droplets fell onto stone slabs, making crisp sounds, and Yago gradually woke up in a daze.

"Where is this? Huh? What does this mean?" Yago froze. His whole body seemed to be fixed to a chair. Everything around him was pitch black, and it felt as if countless iron chains were locking his body in place.

Yago struggled desperately, the chains clattering loudly.

"This scene—why does it feel like I've seen it before?" As he tried to break free, Yago thought to himself. Could this be some kind of prank? But that didn't really seem possible either.

Just as Yago was struggling with all his might, a blinding light appeared. Like the sun itself, a sudden brilliance burst before Yago's eyes, which had just adapted to the darkness, making it impossible for him to open them.

"Clack." Along with the sound of a door closing, footsteps rang out near Yago's ears. Yago could only frown deeply—the intense light irritated his eyes so badly that he couldn't see who was coming at all.

"Heh, truly pitiful. Like an ant that's been caught—tiny and helpless," a hoarse voice mocked.

Yago: "Hey, that's really rude, you know. Who are you? Did you bring me here? Let me tell you, I'm a soldier from the Training Corps, and I'm on very good terms with Instructor Keith Shadis. I suggest you don't mess around, or you'll definitely regret it."

While stalling for time, Yago quietly felt around with his hands. Whoever this person was, he had to escape as soon as possible.

The person seemed to see through Yago's intentions and sneered.

"It's useless. You can't transform into a Titan here."

Yago's heart sank. The power of the Titan had always been his secret—he had never told anyone. At the same time, the elongated nails on his right hand shrank back again. Since the other party knew about his trump card and was still this calm, something was definitely wrong. Yago didn't dare act rashly for the moment.

"Say, you're not some crazy scientist, are you? What, curious about Titan power? Actually, I'm pretty curious too. How about we team up and crack the Titans' secrets together?" Yago changed his tone again, while his nails secretly extended once more, their sheen growing duller and sharper. If it really came down to it, he'd have to try.

Yago gradually recovered his vision, but everything around him was still pitch black.

"Hahahaha... ha." The person suddenly burst into laughter, the hysterical kind.

Yago was covered in black lines. What was so funny?

"I finally understand. How ridiculous. The one resisting fate itself turns out to be fate itself. So that's how it is. Haha, so that's how it is."

After laughing, the shadowy figure seemed to turn around.

"Then let me see whether you can really reach that day. You say the future isn't predetermined—then I want to see your so-called future, Yago, or rather, the Fate Titan."

At this moment, Yago was full of confusion, and a sense of danger erupted in his heart. Something bad was definitely about to happen.

"What do you mean? What Fate Titan? Hey! Explain it clearly!" This was the first time Yago had been so anxious, as if all the truths of time were laid out before him, yet like illusions, completely impossible to grasp.

"I know you're here. Come out and meet me, Yago," the person said calmly.

Yago: "? What? Aren't I right here?"

"I knew you'd be here. Do you still not believe what I said?" A voice came from behind Yago—strange, yet very familiar.

"It's always necessary to confirm it, isn't it? But now I understand—you were right, Yago. What a pity. If back then it had really appeared—uh, no, now you are the real one. Haha. But that's fine. This kind of result is the best, isn't it?" The person's voice sounded doubtful, then regretful, and finally turned into acceptance.

"It's time for me to leave. I shouldn't have appeared here in the first place. Goodbye, Yago," the person said calmly.

The voice behind Yago replied just as calmly, "Goodbye, Eren."

Yago's heart shook violently. Eren?! What on earth was going on?

Crack—like glass shattering. The darkness broke apart piece by piece, revealing light beneath it. The surroundings almost turned into a kingdom of light, and the chains on Yago's body seemed to disappear without him noticing.

Yago immediately stood up and turned around. Suddenly, his pupils shrank. "You!"

"Remember this: you are the Fate Titan. Walk calmly toward the road of the future."

Those words became the last thing Yago heard.

Morning. Yago groggily climbed out of bed, his head aching slightly. Did he dream last night? Why couldn't he remember anything at all? But Yago didn't dwell on it—what did a dream matter?

Suddenly, inspiration struck him. My Titan is the Fate Titan. Huh? Why is it called that? Yet Yago subconsciously ignored the question. The fact that he was the Fate Titan felt as natural as a thirsty person drinking water—simple common sense.
