Chapter 74 - Confronting

The sky above the orphanage didn't darken—it distorted.

Deep, shimmering violet-black energy cascaded down from the clouds like a heavy curtain of ink, sealing the entire compound under a massive, reinforced Pandemonium Realm Barrier. Over the past months, Kd had refined his control over Underworld energy to a terrifying degree. What used to be a local domain was now a sprawling, impenetrable dome stretching across the entire perimeter, humming with oppressive static power.

Inside the quiet halls, Kd rested his fingers against the hilt of his katana, feeling the barrier's pulse beneath his palms.

Miles away, bathed in the dim luminescence of an overhead bulb, Nox sat completely still in a high-backed leather chair. He was reading a thick, weathered leather book, his expression unnervingly peaceful—unbothered by the heavy atmosphere surrounding him.

The heavy door creaked open. Karai, Katina, a tall figure completely concealed under a heavy dark hood, and Prime Clone stepped into the room.

"Nox," Karai said, his voice cold, sharp, and businesslike. "It's time. Everything is aligned."

Katina adjusted the faint, invisible spools of spatial thread hovering around her fingers, a malicious smile touching her lips. "The perimeter is locked, but we aren't here to play hero hunter. The objective comes first."

Prime Clone leaned against the wall, crossing his arms with a sharp smirk. "Don't get it twisted—I'm only running with you four because our interests happen to align for this job. Just make sure you hold up your end of the deal."

Prime Clone glanced toward Nox, whose eyes hadn't left the page. "We move now. Are you coming, or are you going to keep staring at ink?"

Nox slowly, deliberately turned a page. The paper rasped softly in the quiet room.

"I am already present," Nox murmured softly, his voice dripping with an unsettling, calm certainty. "Let us see how long their resolve holds when the inevitable arrives."

Outside the Orphanage Grounds

The air pressure shattered.

It wasn't a slow build-up—it was an instantaneous, suffocating weight that dropped onto the entire courtyard.

Tae stopped dead in his tracks. His hand rested immediately on the hilt of his katana. Beside him, Kd's dark Underworld veins flared along his arms and neck, responding instinctively to the massive malice radiating from the treeline. Joseph's HUD flared to life behind his eyes, his hand already clamped tightly on his own katana as tactical warnings flooded his sight.

Tae turned his head, looking silently at Ayden.

No words were needed. Ayden met Tae's glance with a hardened stare, rolling his shoulders and taking a grounded stance.

Around them, every single member stood ready.

Ethan raised his hands, deep purple dark matter and atomic energy swirling violently around his arms. Diego pulled back the string of his light construct bow, aiming a glowing arrow forward. Marcos balanced his purified mana-infused soccer ball at his feet, ready to strike. Jax's body flared with golden solar heat, bright light gathering at his fists. Rashad primed his tech backpack, the mechanical arms unfolding as electrical bursts hummed along the conduits. Standing slightly offset from the brothers, Walker drew his combat blades, his eyes locked on the horizon.

Nobody hid. Nobody ran.

Emerging from the shadows of the forest edge came Genesis—all of them pulling up at once: Karai, Katina, Nox, the shrouded hooded figure, and Prime Clone.

"They didn't come to scout us," Joseph muttered, his finger tracing the hilt of his katana as his tactical display scanned the threat levels. "They came prepared."

"Then we test the rule," Tae said softly, his voice cutting through the tension as the black mark on his chest pulsed faintly. "We make them come to us."

Nox stepped forward first, his dark aura flaring as his gaze locked straight onto Tae.

"Tae," Nox purred, a dark grin spreading across his face. "I've been waiting for this moment."

"You won't get past me," Tae replied smoothly, unbending his spine as he drew his katana in one fluid motion, the blade gleaming under the dim light. "Not today."

Katina smirked, extending her hands as razor-thin spatial threads swept across the field, aiming directly to sever the coordination between the group. "Let's see how tight your little family bond really is when I tear it apart."

"Not on my watch!" Jax roared, stepping in front of Joseph and Ayden as solar fire erupted around him to scorch the incoming threads.

"Joseph, Ayden, focus!" Kd yelled, drawing his katana with a dark metallic scrape, his Underworld aura surging to match Katina's pressure. "Don't let her divide us!"

Meanwhile, on the eastern flank, Karai and Prime Clone lunged forward with brutal speed.

"Leave these two to us!" Diego shouted, firing a salvo of light arrows from his bow to force Karai back.

"I've got the clone!" Ethan called out, blasting a wave of atomic dark matter from his palms while Marcos booted his mana-charged soccer ball straight into the fray, and Rashad's backpack deployed twin particle beams to flank left and right.

Walker moved like a ghost alongside them, his bladed combat style perfectly echoing the rhythm of the frontline. "Keep them pinned! Don't let them retreat into the tree line!"

As the battlefield erupted into multi-front chaos, the hooded figure stood near the rear, entirely untouched, their face obscured in total darkness as they quietly observed every single movement.

Joseph's tactical interface flashed red as he swept the unknown figure's position.

"Wait..." Joseph whispered, staring at his tactical display. "Zero? His energy signature reads complete zero..."

Ayden broke off from the central clash, stepping into the hooded figure's path to keep them from flanking Tae.

"You're not moving another step," Ayden said plainly, dropping his hands into a loose combat position.

The hooded figure didn't answer right away. Slowly, raised hands reached up to grab the fabric of the hood, pulling it back to reveal the sharp, chilling features of Veyr.

Katina's smile widened as she cast a glance over her shoulder.

"Been hiding long enough, brother?" she purred, her voice dripping with dark affection.

Karai and Nox didn't say a word, but the shared, resonant pulse of their bloodline energy flared around the four of them in unison—confirming the terrifying reality to everyone watching. They weren't just comrades; they were blood siblings. Prime Clone merely watched the exchange with an amused smirk, completely unbothered.

"Interesting," Veyr murmured quietly, stepping forward and staring at Ayden's raw physical presence.

Veyr's fingers twitched.

Having just observed the battle across the courtyard, Veyr's posture shifted. A thin, brilliant beam of hard light suddenly formed between his fingers—a precise, unmistakable replica of Diego's bow energy.

Ayden's eyes narrowed.

"You copied Diego."

Veyr smiled softly. "Borrowed."

He fired. The beam shot forward like a lightning bolt, cutting through the dirt straight for Ayden's shoulder.

Ayden didn't flinch. Possessing the highest battle IQ on the entire team, Ayden immediately picked up on how Veyr had traced Diego's energy. Sensing that Veyr was trying to analyze and copy external magic or activated abilities, Ayden made a split-second tactical choice: he locked away every flashy technique, deciding to use purely raw hand-to-hand combat and Infinite Adaptation.

Ayden lunged, ducking inside the trajectory of the light beam. He threw a heavy, straight right hand—pure speed and physical momentum. Veyr slipped the punch easily, ducking under Ayden's guard and striking Ayden across the ribcage with a palm strike.

Ayden absorbed the blow, barely swaying. He adjusted his center of gravity instantly, driving a vicious left hook toward Veyr's temple.

Veyr parried it, but felt the raw weight behind the counter. He changed his angle, sweeping low to disrupt Ayden's footing—yet Ayden adjusted in mid-air, shifting his weight before his feet even touched the dirt.

Veyr's eyes narrowed slightly. He's adjusting too quickly. He's learning my patterns.

Veyr backed up two paces, lifting his palm directly toward Ayden. Triggering his ability—Borrowed Power—he locked onto Ayden's flow, attempting to pull the underlying mechanism of Ayden's movement into his own arsenal.

Veyr looked down at his open palm.

Nothing.

No energy gathered. No power signature registered.

Veyr flexed his fingers, focused again, and channeled his power directly toward Ayden.

Nothing.

Ayden paused, watching Veyr stare blankly at his own hand.

"What are you doing?" Ayden asked, genuinely confused.

Veyr raised his gaze, his eyes locked onto Ayden with genuine, creeping astonishment.

"What... are you?" Veyr asked softly.

"I don't know," Ayden replied honestly, stepping forward again. "Are we fighting or not?"

Veyr took a slow step backward as Ayden pressed the offensive, realizing that there was no "technique" or "activated skill" to copy. Because Ayden relied strictly on his instincts, martial art discipline, and innate adaptability, Infinite Adaptation wasn't a spell—it was an underlying property of Ayden's very existence. There was simply nothing conventional to borrow.

Ayden drove a massive shoulder check into Veyr, sending the operative sliding back several yards through the dirt.

Instead of looking frustrated, a quiet, eerie smile touched Veyr's face.

"I understand," Veyr whispered.

Ayden narrowed his eyes, his fists still raised. "Understand what?"

"I can't borrow what you haven't finished becoming," Veyr said quietly, stepping backward into the shadows cast by Katina's thread barrier.

Suddenly, a high-pitched alarm shrieked inside Joseph's tactical system.

"Wait—!" Joseph shouted, his voice cutting over the roar of Diego's arrows and Tae's clashing blade. "The barrier! Something bypassed the perimeter!"

Tae's eyes widened as his black chest mark flared with a burning pulse. He disengaged from Nox, landing heavily beside Kd and Joseph.

"They weren't trying to destroy the orphanage," Joseph realized, his voice trembling slightly as he looked at the building behind them. "They were keeping us occupied out here... so someone could get inside!"

Across the clearing, Nox lowered his hand, his creepy, serene smile returning as Karai, Katina, and Prime Clone fell back into formation beside Veyr.

"Objective complete," Nox said smoothly. "We have what we came for."

Tae looked back at the orphanage where the children were housed, then back at Genesis. His fist tightened on his katana until his knuckles turned white.

"We protect our home first!" Tae commanded, making the choice without hesitation as he turned toward the building. "Disengage! Secure the kids!"

Genesis didn't flee or run. They simply turned and stepped back into the shadows of the forest, their mission accomplished without ever needing a final winner.

As the dust settled, Ayden walked back over to where Joseph and Tae were standing, staring at his hands.

"That guy... Veyr," Ayden muttered, brow furrowed. "I don't think he was actually trying to beat me."

Joseph looked up from his tactical interface, his eyes grim.

"No," Joseph said softly, looking toward the dark forest where Genesis had vanished. "He was studying you."
