Chapter 5 - New Kids

The morning after their harrowing encounter with the twisted entity possessing Sister Patricia, the orphanage hummed with an unusual quiet. The children, still shaken, were comforted by the remaining nuns, but the air was thick with the unspoken fear of what lay beyond their walls. For Tae, Kd, and Joseph, the night had been a crucible, forging their resolve and unlocking dormant potentials .

"We need to train," Tae declared, his golden eyes, normally bright with curiosity, now held a deep intensity. "We barely survived last night."

Kd's red eyes crackled with anticipation. "Good. I'm ready to push this further." Joseph, ever the pragmatist, simply nodded, a quiet determination radiating from his blue aura .

They ventured into the orphanage's vast, secluded backyard, a place that had witnessed their earlier struggles and triumphs. The air was crisp, the morning sun painting long shadows on the dewy grass. As they prepared, their auras flared, a silent pact of their shared journey and growing power .

New Powers Awakened

Tae moved first, his golden eyes blazing with focused energy. He practiced the Flash Step, a technique that allowed him to vanish and reappear in a shimmering burst of golden light, leaving fleeting afterimages in his wake. He darted around, a golden blur, each movement refining his control, pushing his speed beyond what was humanly possible .

Joseph, his blue eyes shimmering with The Azure Singularity, began to experiment with a startling new application of his power: Portal Creation. He focused intently, and a small, shimmering rift, crackling with blue energy, appeared in the air before him. He stepped through, reappearing a few feet away, the portal dissolving behind him. He grinned, a rare, genuine smile. "This changes everything," he whispered.

Kd, determined not to be outdone, concentrated on a new form of transportation. His red eyes burned with The Crimson Conductor, and he felt the ambient electromagnetic energy around him surge. With a powerful leap, he shot upwards, a trail of black lightning marking his ascent. This was Electromagnetic Flight, allowing him to soar above the orphanage, surveying the world from a dizzying height.

The brothers reveled in their newfound abilities, pushing their limits, their laughter echoing through the morning air. Tae moved faster than sight, Joseph opened gateways through reality, and Kd soared through the sky like a living bolt of lightning. This was just the beginning of their true potential . As the brothers practiced, their powers illuminating the yard in bursts of light and crackling energy, the orphanage door creaked open. Sister Patricia stood there, a nervous frown on her face. Behind her, three boys emerged, not like the usual new arrivals. These three radiated an unsettling confidence, their gazes sweeping over the yard with a mix of disdain and curiosity that quickly settled on the brothers' fading auras.

The first boy, tall and lanky with slicked-back black hair and a sneer, had eyes that glowed with a faint, predatory green. His name was Jax, and as he walked, the shadows around him seemed to deepen, shifting and elongating at his command.

Following closely was a stout, broad-shouldered boy named Rix, with short, spiky hair and eyes that shimmered with an unstable, fluctuating crimson. He carried himself with an air of barely contained aggression, and as he approached, the very air around him seemed to vibrate, distorting the light and sound .

The third, a charismatic boy named Cygnus, with a confident smirk and eyes that glowed with an ethereal, icy blue, walked with an almost regal stride. He wore expensive-looking clothes that seemed out of place in the humble orphanage. Around him, the air pulsed with a subtle, resonant hum, and tiny motes of light, like miniature stars, danced in his wake.

They stopped a few feet from Tae, Kd, and Joseph, their expressions challenging. Jax's green eyes narrowed, a shadowy tendril flickering from his hand to playfully wrap around a rose bush, instantly withering it. "Looks like we interrupted your little playtime," he drawled, his voice a low, mocking rumble .

Rix snorted, his crimson aura flaring slightly, causing the ground beneath them to tremble faintly. "Playing with light and sparks? Pathetic. I've seen more power in a broken fuse box."

Cygnus simply observed, his icy blue gaze assessing the brothers. A small, self-satisfied smile played on his lips as he flicked his wrist, and a shimmering, almost invisible force field shimmered into existence around his hand. "We're not here for games. We're here because this is where the real power is," he announced, his voice smooth and laced with superiority. "And it seems you boys have just been scratching the surface."

Sister Patricia wrung her hands, stepping forward. "Boys, please. Let's try to be welcoming."

Jax merely chuckled, the shadows around him deepening further. "Welcoming? Sister, these... These playthings need to learn their place. The world is changing, and weakness will be weeded out."

Kd's red eyes crackled defensively, his aura flaring in challenge. "Who do you think you are, showing up here like you own the place?"

Tae, suppressing a surge of anger, stepped forward, his golden gaze meeting Cygnus's icy blue one. "We're the ones who protect this place. And we don't appreciate arrogance."

Joseph, his blue eyes calm but intensely focused, scanned the new boys' energies. Jax's shadows were volatile, Rix's energy felt like a ticking time bomb, and Cygnus's force fields, while impressive, had a faint, almost imperceptible tremor at their edges. He sensed immense power, but also a dangerous lack of control, or perhaps, a willful disdain for it. This wasn't just a rivalry; it was a clash of ideologies.

"We have powers, just like you," Cygnus countered, his smirk widening. "And we intend to use them. To take what we want. To reshape this pathetic world. You can either get on board, or get out of our way."

The air crackled with unspoken tension. The brothers, fresh from their victory over the Wendigo, now faced a new kind of threat – not one of despair and malice, but one of raw, untamed power and dangerous ambition. Their journey, they realized, was about to become far more complicated.

The silence that followed Cygnus's arrogant declaration was heavy, thick with the unspoken challenge hanging in the air. Kd's crackling aura intensified, sparks of black lightning dancing at his fingertips. Joseph's blue eyes remained calm, but a dangerous shimmer rippled beneath their surface, his newfound portals appearing and disappearing in the blink of an eye around his feet. Tae, however, remained outwardly composed. He was the leader, the one who tried to find a peaceful solution first. He had to be the calm one.

"We don't want any trouble," Tae stated evenly, his voice low and firm. "You're welcome to stay here, but you'll respect our home and the people in it."

Jax let out a short, cynical laugh, the shadows shifting restlessly behind him. "Respect is earned, little light. And you three haven't earned a thing."

Rix, his patience wearing thin, slammed a fist into his open palm, creating a small shockwave that rippled through the ground. "Less talk, more action. Let's see what you really got."

Cygnus's icy blue eyes fixed on Tae. "Or maybe we start with the leader," he suggested, a cruel smirk on his face. "A little show of force to set the hierarchy straight."

Before Tae could react, Cygnus flicked his wrist. A razor-thin disk of solidified resonant energy shot toward Sister Patricia, who stood frozen in terror by the doorway. Tae, moving with blinding speed using his Flash Step, vanished and reappeared in front of her, the golden light of his aura flaring as he intercepted the attack with a makeshift shield of light. The disk harmlessly dissolved, but the message was clear. They were willing to hurt the innocent to prove a point.

"What's wrong, golden boy?" Cygnus taunted. "Can't protect everyone?"

The golden light around Tae flared dangerously. He had spent the last twenty-four hours battling a monster born of despair to save Sister Patricia, only to have her threatened again. The righteous anger, so long controlled, began to simmer.

Kd, his protective instincts overriding any sense of caution, launched force thats himself at Jax. A concentrated bolt of black lightning shot from his hand, but Jax dissolved into a ripple of shadows just before the impact. He reformed behind Kd, lashing out with a shadowy tendril. Kd spun, blocking the attack with a surge of electromagnetic energy, but the tendril clung to his aura, sapping his strength.

Meanwhile, Rix charged Joseph, his body a blur of aggressive, red-tinged vibrations. Joseph, using his Azure Singularity, saw the attack unfold in slow motion. He created a small portal at his feet, stepping into it just as Rix's fist slammed into the spot he had been standing. Rix's attack, lacking a target, sent a violent shockwave through the ground, cracking the earth beneath them.

Joseph reappeared behind Rix, unleashing a concentrated beam of Decay energy. The attack slammed into Rix's back, but instead of unraveling him, his vibrating aura simply absorbed and dissipated the energy.

Tae watched his brothers struggle, his internal calm beginning to crack. He saw Kd wrestling with Jax's shadowy energy and Joseph's Decay being neutralized by Rix's vibrational field. He tried to focus, to find a weakness, but Cygnus's voice, cold and mocking, cut through his thoughts.

"Look at them scramble," he sneered. "They fight with anger and fear. You fight with... what? Hope? Hope is a crutch for the weak."

The words hit Tae like a physical blow. The hope that had guided them through the battle with the Wendigo, the love for Sister Patricia that had fueled their victory, was now being twisted and spat upon. Tae had prided himself on his control, on being the beacon of light and reason for his brothers. But watching his family be overwhelmed by these arrogant, vicious newcomers, something inside him snapped.

He looked at Cygnus, his golden eyes no longer just shimmering with energy, but burning with a searing, white-hot fury. The light around him didn't just flare; it exploded outward, a blinding nova of pure, unrestrained power.

"You don't understand," Tae's voice rumbled, no longer a measured whisper but a storm of pure light energy. "This isn't about power. It's about protecting the people you love. And you just made a very big mistake."

He didn't Flash Step. He didn't create a shield. He simply vanished in a blinding burst of golden light, and a second later, Cygnus was airborne, a golden-white afterimage of Tae's handprint burned into his chest. The resonant force field Cygnus had been so proud of shattered instantly, the sheer power of Tae's rage overwhelming it completely.

Cygnus hit the ground hard, gasping for air, his smirk replaced by a look of stunned disbelief and pain. The other two, Jax and Rix, immediately ceased their attacks on Kd and Joseph, their cocky attitudes gone, replaced with wary caution as they stared at Tae. The gentle leader had been replaced by a force of nature, a sunburst of incandescent fury.

The clearing was silent once more, but this time, it was an uneasy silence, charged with the palpable shock of Tae's unleashed power. The game was over. The war had just begun.
