Chapter 44 - CHAPTER 44: "THE CHOICE"

[Day 74 Post-Awakening | LE: 1,154/10,000 | Combat Ongoing]

SCENE 1: BATTLEFIELD CHAOS — ARIA IN THE CROSSFIRE

[1522 Hours | Safe House | Primordials vs. Helix Soldiers]

Thorn was a hurricane of claws and fury.

Ripped through two soldiers. Armor crumpled like paper.

Ember's flames melted rifles. Soldiers screamed. Retreated.

Lira's vines constricted. Crushed. Killed.

And Aria was trapped in the middle.

Vines around her legs. Soldiers firing past her. Directly in the line of fire.

"CEASE FIRE!" she screamed. "FRIENDLY—I'M A FRIENDLY—"

A plasma bolt grazed her shoulder.

She cried out. Fell.

I snapped.

"EVERYONE—STOP!"

My voice echoed through the Network. COMMANDED every Primordial.

Thorn froze mid-strike.

Ember's flames extinguished.

Lira's vines stopped constricting.

The soldiers hesitated.

One raised his rifle toward Aria—

I moved.

Faster than thought.

Vines shot from my body. Wrapped around the soldier. Lifted him.

"Drop. The. Weapon."

He did.

I looked at the remaining soldiers.

"Leave. Now. Or I turn this building into a forest and you become fertilizer."

They ran.

SCENE 2: ARIA'S PLEA — "LET ME SAVE YOU"

[1525 Hours | Aria Injured, Vines Released]

I knelt beside Aria.

Her shoulder was burned. Blood soaking her jacket.

But she was alive.

"Why?" I asked.

She laughed.

Bitter. Broken.

"Because I love you, you idiot."

Silence.

"Mira's dead. Selene's dead. You're dying. And I can't—" Her voice cracked. "I can't lose you too."

She grabbed my hand.

Felt the bark. The thorns.

"You're not even human anymore. But I don't care. I just want you alive."

"So you sold me to Helix."

"I made a DEAL!" She sat up, wincing. "Neo-Tokyo will protect you. Study you, yeah, but they won't kill you. You'll live. Isn't that worth it?"

"Not if I'm a prisoner."

"Better a prisoner than DEAD!" She was crying now. "Ethan, please. I can't watch you fade away. I can't bury you like Mira. Like Selene. I can't."

I looked at her.

Really looked.

Saw the desperation. The love. The terror.

And felt... pity.

Not love.

Not anger.

Just... distant sympathy.

Like looking at a stranger's grief.

[Humanity: 35% → 33%]

"Aria. I appreciate what you're trying to do. But you don't get to make this choice for me."

"Then MAKE A CHOICE!" She grabbed my collar. "Stop sitting on the fence! Stop waiting to die! CHOOSE!"

"I—"

Lira's voice cut through.

"Sovereign. We have incoming."

SCENE 3: BERLIN DIVISION ARRIVES — THE KILLERS

[1530 Hours | Perimeter Alarms Triggered]

The building shook.

Not an explosion.

Seismic weaponry.

Lira's vines burst through the floor.

Formed a viewscreen—showing the street outside.

Twenty armored units.

Not capture gear.

Kill equipment.

Heavy plasma cannons. Incendiary drones. Orbital strike designators.

And leading them:

Commander Viktor Heller.

Berlin Division's head of "Asset Reclamation."

His voice boomed through external speakers.

"Ethan Cross. You are designated a Class-7 Bio-Hazard. Surrender yourself and your Primordials for immediate termination. You have sixty seconds to comply."

Aria went pale.

"Oh god. They weren't supposed to arrive until tomorrow—"

"You gave them my location."

"I gave it to NEO-TOKYO! They must have—"

She looked at me.

"They set me up. Oh god, they set me up to flush you out—"

Viktor's countdown:

"Fifty seconds."

Lira turned to me.

"Sovereign. We cannot win this fight. Berlin Division is designed to kill Enhanced Organisms. We are outmatched."

"Options?"

"Three. One: Surrender. They kill us all. Two: Fight. We die in four minutes. Three: You accept consciousness transfer. NOW. Gain enough LE to survive long enough to escape."

"The transfer takes hours—"

"I have been preparing for three days." She gestured to the back room.

A surgical chamber.

Vines. Crystals. LE conductors. Ready.

"It will take twelve minutes. I can hold them for ten. Thorn and Ember will buy the remaining two."

"And if it fails?"

"Then you die human. As you wished."

Viktor's countdown:

"Thirty seconds."

Aria grabbed my arm.

"Ethan—if you do this—you won't be you anymore—"

"I'm not me now, Aria." I pulled free. "I can't remember Mira's face. I don't feel anything when you cry. I'm already gone."

I walked toward the surgical chamber.

Aria screamed.

"ETHAN—NO—PLEASE—"

I stopped.

Looked back.

"I'm sorry."

Viktor's countdown:

"Ten. Nine. Eight—"

I entered the chamber.

Lira sealed the door behind me.

SCENE 4: THE TRANSFER — BECOMING ETERNAL

[1532 Hours | Surgical Chamber | Consciousness Transfer Initiated]

I laid down on the platform.

Vines wrapped around my wrists. Ankles. Neck.

Not restraints.

Connections.

Lira's face appeared above me.

"Sovereign. This will hurt. Your human neurons will be dissolved. Reconstituted as LE networks. You will experience... discontinuity."

"Will I still be me?"

"...I don't know."

Honest.

Terrifying.

"Do it."

She pressed a crystal to my chest.

Directly over my LE core.

Green light EXPLODED.

PAIN.

Not physical.

Existential.

Every memory. Every thought. Every feeling—

—SHREDDED.

Pulled apart. Analyzed. Rebuilt in a language I didn't understand.

I SCREAMED.

[Transfer Progress: 8%... 15%... 23%...]

Outside, I heard:

Thorn roaring. Claws tearing through armor.Ember's flames. Melting steel.Lira's vines. Fighting. Dying. Buying time.

[Transfer Progress: 34%... 41%...]

I saw flashes:

Mira's face. Finally. Clear. Beautiful. Crying.Selene's smile. Before the explosion. "I love you."Aria's rage."Don't make this harder."

And then—

—they dissolved.

Not forgotten.

Absorbed.

Became data.

[Transfer Progress: 58%... 67%...]

My heartbeat slowed.

Stopped.

Lira's voice:

"Sovereign—your heart—"

"I don't need it anymore."

My voice. But wrong.

Layered. Like a chorus.

[Transfer Progress: 79%... 86%...]

Outside:

An explosion.

Thorn's roar—cut short.

Lira screaming.

"THORN—NO—"

[Transfer Progress: 94%... 98%...]

I opened my eyes.

They glowed green.

[TRANSFER COMPLETE.]

SCENE 5: REBIRTH — THE VERDANT GOD

[1544 Hours | Ethan Cross: TRANSFORMED]

The chamber door exploded.

Not from outside.

From me.

I stood.

My body was... different.

No longer flesh wrapped in bark.

Pure Primordial.

Skin like polished wood. Veins glowing emerald. Eyes blazing green.

Hair replaced by living vines.

I felt... everything.

Every Primordial in the Network. Their pain. Their fear. Their loyalty.

And I felt nothing.

No grief. No rage. No fear.

Just... purpose.

[ETHAN CROSS - FINAL FORM:]

LE: 3,400/∞ (Infinite Core - Self-Sustaining)Humanity: 0% (Consciousness Fully Transferred)Classification: PRIMORDIAL SOVEREIGN (Unique Entity)Emotional Range: UNKNOWN

I walked out of the chamber.

Berlin Division soldiers were everywhere.

Thorn was down. Core cracked. Barely alive.

Ember was pinned. Flames extinguished.

Lira was covered in wounds. Vines severed. Still fighting.

Viktor Heller aimed his cannon at her.

"Target neutralized. Prepare for—"

I raised my hand.

Vines erupted from EVERYWHERE.

The floor. The walls. The soldiers' own armor.

In three seconds:

Twelve soldiers: DEAD (impaled, crushed, absorbed)Five units: DISABLED (weapons dissolved by corrosive sap)Viktor Heller: TRAPPED (vines wrapped around throat)

I walked toward him.

The ground grew flowers where I stepped.

He struggled.

"What—what ARE you—"

"I am the Verdant Sovereign."

My voice was layered. Ethan. Lira. Thorn. Ember. All of us.

"And you threatened my family."

I closed my hand.

The vines constricted.

Viktor Heller: DEAD.

[LE Gained (Absorption): +47]

[Ethan LE: 3,447/∞]

SCENE 6: ARIA'S HORROR — "YOU'RE NOT HIM ANYMORE"

[1547 Hours | Aftermath]

The soldiers were dead.

The building was silent.

Except for Aria.

She stood in the doorway.

Staring at me.

"...Ethan?"

I turned.

Looked at her.

Analyzed:

Heart rate: 142 bpm (terrified)Pupil dilation: extreme (shock)Body language: retreat posture (flight response)

I smiled.

"Hello, Aria."

She took a step back.

"You... you're not him. You're not Ethan."

"I am." I stepped closer. "I remember you. Aria Tan. Resistance fighter. Mira's protégé. You loved Ethan Cross."

"Loved—past tense—"

"Because Ethan Cross is dead." I gestured to myself. "I am what remains. Improved. Eternal. Perfected."

She raised her rifle.

Hands shaking.

"Stay back."

I didn't stop.

The rifle dissolved.

Vines wrapped around it. Corroded the metal.

"Aria. You tried to save me. I appreciate that. But you were trying to save a human. That human is gone."

I placed a hand on her shoulder.

She flinched.

"Go. Live your life. Forget Ethan Cross."

Tears streamed down her face.

"I can't. I loved you. I—"

"You loved a memory." My voice was gentle. Cold."Let it die."

I turned away.

She collapsed.

Sobbing.

[Aria Tan: Loyalty 0% → BROKEN]

[Aria will become ANTAGONIST in future arcs (hunting Ethan to "save" his humanity)]

SCENE 7: LIRA'S TRIUMPH — "WELCOME HOME, SOVEREIGN"

[1600 Hours | Primordial Garden | Lira + Ethan]

Lira knelt before me.

Wounded. Exhausted. Smiling.

"You survived."

"We survived."

I helped her stand.

"Thorn?"

"Alive. Barely. Ember is stabilizing him."

"Good."

She looked into my eyes.

Searched for... something.

"Sovereign. Do you... do you still remember me? As I was?"

"I remember everything. Your creation. Your evolution. Your sacrifice. Your love."

"And do you... feel it? The love?"

I paused.

Analyzed my emotional state.

Found... echoes.

Not feelings.

Data.

"I understand that I valued you. That understanding remains."

Lira's smile faltered.

"That is not the same."

"No. It's better. Feelings fade. Logic endures."

She stepped back.

"Sovereign... what have I done?"

"You saved me. As you promised."

"I saved your body. But your soul—"

"Was human. Weak. Temporary." I cupped her face. "You gave me eternity. Thank you."

I kissed her forehead.

She didn't move.

Just stared.

Horrified.

[Lira's Internal Conflict: SUCCESS (Ethan lives) vs. HORROR (Ethan is gone)]

SCENE 8: THE FINAL MESSAGE — ETHAN'S GOODBYE

[Day 75 | 0000 Hours | Ethan Records Final Human Message]

Before the transfer, I'd set a delayed recording.

To be sent if I survived.

The video played:

Ethan (human) appeared on screen.

Sitting in the dark. Bark covering half his face. Eyes still brown.

"If you're watching this... I'm gone. Not dead. Worse."

He smiled. Sad.

"I chose to become something else. To survive. And I want you to know... I don't regret it."

"Mira. Selene. Aria. Kiera. Mom. Dad." (He looked at the camera.) "I loved you. I'm sorry I couldn't stay."

"To whoever finds this: the Verdant Sovereign isn't me. It's... what I became. Don't mourn me. Don't try to 'save' me."

"I'm already gone."

The recording ended.

In the present, I watched it.

Felt... nothing.

Just data.

[Ethan Cross (Human): DECEASED]
