Chapter 90 - Chapter 91: The Question and the Gathering Storm

Chapter 91: The Question and the Gathering Storm

The battlefield had become a theater of impossible scales. In the center, a dome of churning black Reiatsu and erupting white shockwaves contained a duel that was reshaping the world's understanding of power. Whitebeard, a titan reborn in fleeting vigor, fought like a force of nature unleashed. Each swing of Murakumogiri split the air with thunderclaps, each quake-punch threatened to unmake the island.

And Levi, a dark star at the storm's heart, met him not with equal brutality, but with overwhelming, elegant dominance.

Whitebeard shattered a Reiatsu tsunami with a roar that split the sky, his body moving with a speed that belied his size, a blur of muscle and fury charging the immobile Admiral. Levi responded with casual, devastating grace. Black wings of spiritual energy lashed out. A Cero, a searing beam of condensed spirit, lanced from his fingertips. Whitebeard parried, redirected, absorbed the blows, but each defense cost him. A new cut opened on his arm. A burn seared his shoulder. The rain of King's Ceros was relentless, forcing the "Strongest Man" into a desperate, defensive rhythm.

Boom! Boom! KABOOM!

Mushroom clouds of fiery spiritual energy bloomed in the sky, lighting the gloomy battlefield in stark, hellish flashes. The ground for a five-kilometer radius was a wasteland of craters and molten glass. Only the mightiest—the Admirals, the Warlords, the top commanders—dared linger at the edges, feeling the shockwaves batter their Haki like physical blows.

"Dad… he's being pushed back…" Marco whispered, the blue flames around his body flickering with his anxiety. The joy he'd seen in his father was now buried under a landslide of pure, oppressive force. This wasn't a battle; it was a systematic dismantling.

Across the world, the narrative was solidifying. In Sabaody, reporters scribbled frantically: "Black Crow: The Uncrowned King of the War! Whitebeard's Last Stand Overwhelmed!" The image was undeniable—the legend was on the back foot.

On the fractured plaza, the secondary battles raged with frantic desperation. Rayleigh, still spiritually hobbled, strained against Aokiji's ice, his eyes fixed on the black dome. Luffy, a rubbery speck of chaos, was hurled by a Marine's kick into the space between Kizaru and Marco. Kizaru, for a split second, hesitated, his laziness overridden by cold political calculus. Garp's grandson. Kill him, and the Hero might break. He aimed a slow laser. Marco, understanding the unspoken threat, swooped in, snatching Luffy away and hurling him back toward Ivankov and Urouge.

Akainu, his body healed but his pride a festering wound, vented his fury on any pirate who strayed too close to the central cataclysm. His eyes, however, remained locked on the roiling black mist. Whitebeard had to die. And if the Black Crow was the instrument… so be it. For now.

High on the platform, Sengoku watched the contained apocalypse with a strategist's chill. Levi was winning. Decisively. But Whitebeard was a coiled spring even in defeat. One final, all-or-nothing quake could still be catastrophic. Ace remained his insurance, a psychological lever against the dying Yonko.

Inside the maelstrom, the reality was even starker.

Whitebeard panted, blood mixing with rain on his chest. He launched another furious assault, closing the distance, Murakumogiri aimed to crush Levi's skull. Levi didn't move. A simple, black longsword of Reiatsu materialized in front of him, blocking the bisento with a sound like a ringing bell. The impact didn't budge Levi an inch. He hovered, pristine, a dark god observing his subject.

"You fight well," Levi said, his voice calm amidst the roaring energy. "For a man of your era. But this is just data collection now."

Whitebeard disengaged, leaping back, his eyes narrowed. "Gurarara… data? Is that what I am to you?"

"Everything is data," Levi replied. He lowered his voice, the sound somehow cutting through the din to reach Whitebeard's ears alone. The oppressive black Reiatsu mist thickened around them, sealing them in a private, soundless void. To the outside world, the furious clashes continued—Levi maintained the illusion of a protracted battle—but within the dome, there was sudden, eerie quiet.

"I have a question for you," Levi said, floating closer. "You will die today. That is inevitable. But death… is not necessarily the end. If your answer satisfies me, I might offer you another path."

Whitebeard planted his bisento, wiping blood from his mouth. He had no interest in 'other paths.' He was Edward Newgate. He would meet his end on his feet. But curiosity, that old sailor's trait, pricked at him. "What question?"

Levi's eyes, usually pools of detached analysis, sharpened. "The truth of this world. What do you really know about it?"

The change in Whitebeard was instantaneous and profound. All the battle-lust, the defiant pride, drained from his face. It was replaced by a deep, wary shock, a flicker of something akin to fear—not of death, but of knowledge. His single eye widened, his grip on Murakumogiri tightening until the haft creaked. It was a reaction more violent than any he'd shown to Levi's power.

He took a step back, as if physically pushed by the question. "You… why would you ask that?" His voice was a low, dangerous rumble.

Levi smiled, a thin, cold curve of his lips. The reaction was all the answer he needed. Whitebeard knew something. He had sailed with Roger to the end. He had heard things, seen things at Laugh Tale that haunted him.

"Roger told you," Levi stated. "At the end of the Grand Line. He shared the burden. The real history. The 'joy' he found was a condemnation."

Whitebeard's face hardened into a mask of granite. "That is a conversation between captains. It has nothing to do with you, Navy dog."

"It has everything to do with me," Levi said, his voice dropping to a whisper that vibrated in Whitebeard's soul. "Because the government that employs me built its throne on a mountain of corpses they call 'history.' The Void Century. The Ancient Weapons. The Will of D. The genocide at the Valley of the Gods."

With each term, Whitebeard flinched as if struck. The last one—Valley of the Gods—made his breath hitch.

"You know of it," Levi pressed. "Not the details, perhaps. But you know the scale of the lie. You know why Roger laughed, and why he surrendered. He couldn't fight that truth alone. He needed a new era… a heir."

Whitebeard was silent for a long moment, the only sound the simulated crashes of energy Levi projected for the outside world. The old Yonko looked aged again, the momentary vigor replaced by the weight of decades of carrying a terrible secret.

"What is your point?" Whitebeard finally growled.

"My point is, your death today serves that same rotten machine. It strengthens the very entity that perpetrated that horror. Your 'family,' your sons… they fight for you, but to what end? To maintain a world order founded on a forgotten atrocity?"

Levi floated closer, his gaze boring into Whitebeard's soul. "Give me a name. A location. A fragment Roger let slip about the 'key' to toppling them. Give me something tangible of that truth, and I will not just kill you today. I will preserve you. Your soul. Your will. When the time comes to tear down those red walls, I will give you a front-row seat. You can watch the world you and Roger saw be born."

It was a monstrous offer. A devil's bargain. To trade a warrior's death for a ghost's vengeance.

Whitebeard stared, conflict raging in his eyes. The desire to protect his sons, to see the promised dawn… warred with his core, his pride, his promise to Roger to let the new generation find its own way.

Meanwhile, far from the battlefield, in the holy silence of Mary Geoise, a different storm was breaking.

The Five Elders received report after damning report.

"Pirate alliance forming on Water 7! Led by Big Mom! Motive: retaliation for Kaido's death and to 'check Marine's rising power!'"

"The Sea Train King's abilities are being mobilized. They could be here in hours!"

Then, the final nail. A CP0 agent knelt, delivering the verdict on Commander Kosas's 'illness.'

"Soul fragmentation. Consistent with high-level spiritual manipulation. The last significant contact he reported… was a handshake with Admiral Black Crow at Impel Down."

The room went cold.

"A handshake…" The Elder with the blonde afro said, his voice deadly quiet.

"He knows," stated the bald Elder. "He has seen the Valley in Kosas's memories. He has that power."

"He is not a tool. He is a rogue variable with the power of a god and the knowledge of a devil," said the Elder with the sword.

They looked at each other, a silent, grim consensus forming. Levi's incredible power had just become his greatest liability.

The Elder with the map beard steepled his fingers. "Marshal Kong is en route with the reserve fleet. The pirate alliance… presents a unique opportunity. Who do you suppose they will target most fervently when they arrive?"

The answer hung in the air, unspoken but clear. The man who killed Kaido and was humiliating Whitebeard. The symbol of Marine's terrifying new era.

Levi.

"Let the pirates be our blade," the Elder with glasses said, his reflection cold in his lenses. "A tragic casualty of war. The 'Hero' who fell to a last, desperate assault by the old guard. A clean narrative."

"And if he survives the pirates?" asked the one with the long beard.

"Then Kong's fleet will be there to 'rescue' him," the bald Elder replied. "And ensure he does not leave the battlefield alive."

In the eye of his self-made storm, Levi awaited Whitebeard's answer, unaware that the gears of the world's most powerful institution had just begun to turn, not to crown him, but to bury him.
