Chapter 81: The Warden's Return and a Final Salvo
The voice that cut through the chaos was not loud, but it carried an undeniable, weary authority. It came from the shaft, followed by the slow, heavy clank of boots on broken stone.
Warden Magellan emerged onto the ravaged Level 4, his massive form swaying slightly but his gaze sharp and clear. The forced sleep Levi had induced had been deep, but brief. The residual spiritual backlash from Levi's earlier clashes and the scent of burning dragon had shocked his system awake. He saw the scene: his prison in ruins, a monstrous black-and-white creature standing guard over the cowed legends of Level 6, his Vice Admiral ally holding a blade that pulsed with dark power, and in the sky, two Emperors of the Sea tearing into each other while a third, the architect of this madness, prepared a finishing blow.
Magellan's sense of duty, ironclad and unyielding, overrode his disorientation and fear. This was his prison. This chaos was his responsibility to end.
"Warden," Gion said, her voice tight with relief and lingering tension.
Magellan gave her a curt nod, his eyes fixed on Levi, who was floating with a finger extended, a sphere of absolute blackness—the Black Cero—pulsing at its tip, aimed at the distracted Kaido. "Admiral Black Crow. Your assistance is… noted. But the enforcement of order within Impel Down is my duty. This… spectacle ends now."
He wasn't challenging Levi's authority; he was reasserting his own jurisdiction. It was a brave, perhaps foolhardy, statement given the power on display, but it was the last bastion of a man clinging to the structure of his world.
Levi didn't lower his hand. He glanced at Magellan, his expression unreadable. The Warden was a useful tool, predictable and bound by rules. A tool that had just declared itself operational again. Interrupting his final strike on Kaido was inconvenient, but not catastrophic. The Beast Emperor was already bleeding, soul-burned, and now locked in a furious duel with Shanks. He was neutralized as an immediate threat to Levi's plans.
"The spectacle," Levi replied, his voice cool, "was a necessary purge. The prison is secure. Your 'guardian' is in place." He gestured slightly with his chin towards the silent Arrancar. "My business here is concluded. The rest… is cleanup. Do your duty, Warden."
With that, he let the terrifying energy at his fingertip dissipate, not in a flash, but as if it were drawn back into his very being. The immediate, apocalyptic threat to Kaido vanished.
But the duel in the sky did not stop. Shanks, lost in a red haze of vengeance for Oden, was hammering at Kaido with a ferocity that was almost suicidal, ignoring his own openings. Kaido, wounded and enraged, was fighting back with the brutal efficiency of a cornered animal. They were tearing each other apart, high above the wreckage of the prison.
Magellan's jaw tightened. Two Emperors destroying each other over his prison was not "cleanup"; it was a potential cataclysm. He raised his hands, venom beginning to bubble around his fists. "CEASE HOSTILITIES!" he boomed, his voice amplified by the chamber. "THIS IS A WORLD GOVERNMENT FACILITY! DISPERSE, OR BE SUBDUED!"
It was a laughable threat to beings of their caliber, but it was protocol. It was the last warning of the law before chaos claimed everything.
Neither Shanks nor Kaido paid him any heed. Their world had narrowed to each other.
Levi watched for a second longer, then turned his back on the aerial battle. He had more important prey. His gaze found Gion. "You have control here. Assist the Warden. The Red Hair Pirates are disengaging. Let them go. Their purpose is spent."
He then looked down the shaft, to where the Arrancar stood sentinel over Level 6. He sent a silent, reinforced command through their spiritual link. Guard. Consume any who attempt to leave without my or Gion's express permission.
The Arrancar's single red eye pulsed in acknowledgment.
Satisfied, Levi didn't bid farewell. He simply ascended, not through the hole Kaido had made, but through the main shaft he had created, a dark streak against the patch of sky. He passed the battling Emperors without a glance. Their war was a sidebar now, a violent epilogue to his main performance here.
As he cleared the top of Impel Down, he saw the Red Hair Pirates' ship already at a distance, cutting through the choppy waters, making for the horizon. Rayleigh was likely aboard. That was fine. Rayleigh was a planted piece now, bound by geas and debt.
On the distant horizon, the World Government fleet still hovered, watching. Levi ignored them too.
His focus was now singular, a compass needle pointing east. The spiritual tempest of Marineford was reaching a crescendo of agony and defiance. Whitebeard's titanic spirit was a supernova in its final, catastrophic collapse. The old lion was roaring his last.
And Levi needed to be there to ensure that roar ended not with a whimper of betrayal or a gang-beating, but with a definitive, world-shaking strike from the new power that had just humbled two Emperors and conquered a hell.
He accelerated, the wind screaming past him, the sounds of the fading battle at Impel Down swallowed by the sea. The stage was set for the finale. The Black Crow was returning to claim his crown.
