Chapter 78: The Dragon and the Emperor
The air in the sundered heart of Impel Down became a forge for legends. Two Emperors of the Sea, one driven by feral rage and pain, the other by cold necessity, turned their combined might on a single man.
Kaido, now in his towering hybrid form, was a tempest of primal fury. Lightning crackled around the horn-like protrusions on his head, and his remaining hand gripped the spiked mace, Hassaikai, with enough force to shatter mountains. The stump of his severed arm still dripped steaming blood, a testament to Levi's impossible sharpness. His Conqueror's Haki radiated out in a palpable, bestial wave of pure destructive intent—a stark contrast to Shanks's refined, dominating will.
Shanks moved beside him, not in unison, but as a separate, lethal harmony. His single arm held Gryphon with effortless grace, the blade humming with supreme Armament and the lingering resonance of his world-class Conqueror's Haki. His eyes were sharp, focused. This wasn't about pride or a fair fight anymore; it was about survival and seizing an unexpected, brutal opportunity. If they could bring down the Black Crow here, the balance of the entire world would shift.
Levi faced them, standing on empty air over the shaft. The hole in his chest was gone, the skin seamless as if it had never been pierced. In his hand, he still held Kaido's severed dragon forearm, a grotesque trophy. He looked at the two converging forces of nature, and for the first time since arriving, a genuine, coldly anticipatory smile touched his lips.
"Finally," he said, his voice a low murmur that somehow carried over Kaido's thunderous aura. "A weight worth testing against."
He dropped the severed limb. It fell, shriveling and turning back into a normal, massive human arm as it lost contact with Kaido's consciousness, plummeting into the darkness of Level 6.
Then, Levi didn't wait for them to reach him. He met them.
He didn't flash-step. He pushed against the world itself with his Reiatsu, launching forward like a railgun projectile. His right hand formed a simple fist, but around it, the air warped and screamed, compressed into a vacuum shell by sheer spiritual pressure.
Kaido, enraged and overconfident in his hybrid form's durability, met him head-on, Hassaikai swinging in a blow that could crater an island. "DIE, YOU INSECT!"
Levi's fist met the head of the kanabo.
CRACK-BOOM!
The sound wasn't of metal on flesh. It was the sound of localized reality fracturing. A sphere of distorted space, black with condensed Reiatsu, exploded at the point of impact. Hassaikai, a weapon that had withstood countless legendary clashes, didn't break. It was deflected, the force transmitted through it so cleanly and utterly that Kaido's grip was torn open, the mace spinning from his hand and smashing through a distant wall of the prison.
At the same moment, Shanks was there. His strike wasn't a wild smash; it was a piercing thrust, Gryphon's tip aimed with surgeon's precision at the point between Levi's ribs, seeking a vital spot his regeneration might miss. The blade was wreathed in the deepest crimson Haki, a penetrative force that could pierce any defense.
Levi didn't block with his other hand. He turned his gaze.
Reiatsu Focus: Null Point.
A tiny, intense point of absolute spiritual negation formed in the air exactly where Gryphon's tip would pass. It was like throwing a pebble into a stream to divert the current. Shanks's perfect thrust was thrown microscopically off-course, the Haki around the blade flickering as it interacted with the alien energy. The blade still sliced through Levi's Admiral coat, drawing a line of red across his side, but it was a shallow cut, not a killing pierce.
Levi ignored the sting. The hand that had deflected Kaido's mace was already reversing its motion, fingers splayed, aiming at Kaido's broad chest.
Hadō #63. Raikōhō. Searing Fury of the Lightning.
But this was no Kidō chant. It was Reiatsu shaped into the concept of annihilating lightning. A torrent of black-and-white, crackling spiritual energy, silent but blinding, erupted from his palm and slammed into Kaido point-blank.
Kaido roared, not in pain, but in surprise and fury. His legendary toughness held—the blast didn't penetrate—but it pushed him, the concussive, soul-scouring force of it driving his massive hybrid form back through the air, his boots carving trenches in the stone floor of Level 5 as he skidded to a halt.
In the opening, Shanks pressed, his swordsmanship a blur. He wasn't trying for one powerful blow; he was layering cuts, testing, probing with a speed that belied his size, each strike carrying the weight of his Emperor's will.
Levi parried with his forearms, not with Haki, but with solidified bands of Reiatsu that formed and shattered with each impact, ringing with sounds like shattering crystal. He was analyzing, adapting. Shanks's Haki was a scalpel, seeking weaknesses. Kaido's was a tsunami, demanding overwhelming force to halt.
He's faster, more skilled. He's stronger, more durable. Together, they cover each other's gaps. The assessment was clinical, even as he wove between Gryphon's flashes and dodged a lunging grab from the recovered Kaido.
He decided to change the terrain.
Levi dropped. Not down the shaft, but through the floor of Level 5, his Reiatsu dissolving the stone and seastone reinforcement like acid. He landed in the midst of Level 4: Blazing Hell. The infernal heat meant nothing to him.
Kaido, with a bestial snarl, crashed down after him, shattering the hole wider. Shanks followed with a controlled descent, eyes wary.
The prisoners and guards on Level 4 scattered in terror, the battle of gods now in their hell.
Levi stood amidst the flames. "You want a brawl, Beast?" he said to Kaido. "Let's brawl."
He didn't go for Shanks. He targeted Kaido exclusively. He closed the distance in an instant, not with speed, but by folding the space between them with a wrench of spiritual pressure. His hands clamped onto Kaido's remaining arm and one of his horns.
Reiatsu Crush: Soul Vice.
It wasn't physical strength against Kaido's monstrous muscles. It was the application of spiritual pressure inside Kaido's form, a vice tightening around the very energy of his life. Kaido bellowed, not just in physical strain, but in spiritual agony. He felt his own incredible vitality being contested, compressed.
Shanks's blade flashed, aiming to sever Levi's hold. Levi didn't let go. He used Kaido as a pivot, swinging the Emperor's massive body around as a living shield. Shanks was forced to abort his strike, twisting away with a curse.
Levi then slammed Kaido, not into a wall, but into the very concept of the prison's foundation. He focused his Reiatsu into a point on Kaido's back and unleashed a concentrated pulse of pure spiritual negation.
Boom.
The shockwave wasn't fiery or icy. It was a silent, expanding sphere of void that erased the flames around them and left a perfect, smooth crater in the seastone floor. Kaido was driven into the center of that crater, his body cracking the stone beneath him from the force transferred through his own invulnerable hide.
He wasn't defeated. He was pinned, his spirit screaming under the weight of a pressure that had nothing to do with gravity.
Levi stood over him, one foot planted on Kaido's chest, holding the horn. He looked up at Shanks, who stood poised a dozen meters away, Gryphon ready, his face a mask of stark realization.
The message was clear. Levi could focus on one of them with enough intensity to control them, if not instantly defeat them. In a one-on-one, the outcome was terrifyingly uncertain. In a two-on-one, he could isolate and brutalize.
The balance of the three-way fight had just been violently, decisively tipped. The Black Crow hadn't just held his own against two Emperors.
He had, for a moment, made one of them his footstool.
