Melissa's panic metamorphosed into fear, her heart pounded as she watched Rowan muttering to himself, his eyes unfocused.
That definitely wasn't normal.
She stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor with a sharp screech and that sound seemed to jolt Rowan back to reality.
He blinked rapidly, his eyes suddenly focusing, the distant look draining from his face as if someone had flipped a switch.
"What the hell am I doing? This isn't me. I don't fall apart like this. I don't waste time on such... such silly thoughts." He thought furiously then shook his head sharply, his jaw tightening.
Then, he looked up at Melissa, his expression smoothing back into the cold and controlled demeanor.
"Is the dinner over already? Can I leave now?" he asked in a flat voice as if he was discussing business.
Melissa stared at him, completely taken aback by the sudden shift.
