Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: The Unseen Invitation

The final bell rang, releasing students into the golden afternoon light. Conversations buzzed. Footsteps scattered. Another school day ended.

But for Riko Aoyama, something was just beginning.

She stood at the gate, her usual perfect posture slightly softer, her expression carrying a warmth that hadn't been there months ago. Her eyes scanned the exiting students until they found three familiar figures.

"Yuki-san! Hikari-san! Kaito-senpai!" Her voice carried across the crowd. "Wait a moment!"

They turned. Yuki immediately bounced toward her. Hikari slowed her usual escape. Kaito paused mid-stride.

Riko took a breath. This was new territory. Uncharted. Terrifying in its own way.

But she had made up her mind.

"My birthday is this Saturday," she began, her voice steady despite the flutter in her chest. "It's not a big celebration—just a small gathering at my home." She looked at each of them in turn. "I want to invite all three of you."

Yuki's face lit up like a firework. Hikari blinked in surprise. Kaito's expression remained neutral, but something shifted behind his eyes.

"I know it's short notice," Riko continued, her usual polish cracking just enough to reveal genuine vulnerability. "I can arrange transportation from school if needed. And if you can't come, it's completely fine—there's no pressure, no obligation—"

"Riko." Yuki grabbed her hands. "We're coming. Obviously."

Riko looked at her, startled.

Yuki grinned. "You think we'd miss our friend's birthday? Rude."

Hikari gave a small nod. "I'll be there."

Kaito met Riko's gaze. For a moment, the silence stretched. Then he inclined his head—the smallest gesture, but from him, it was everything.

"I'll come."

Riko felt something warm bloom in her chest. A smile spread across her face—not the polished, calculated smile she had perfected over years, but something genuine. Unprotected. Real.

"Thank you." Her voice was softer now. "I might actually have fun this year. With all of you." She took a step back, still smiling. "See you tomorrow!"

She turned and walked toward her waiting car, but her steps were lighter than they had ever been. She had found something. Something she hadn't even known she was searching for.

Behind her, three figures watched her go.

Yuki grabbed Kaito's arm. "We have to get her something amazing."

Kaito glanced at her. "Obviously."

Hikari crossed her arms. "But what? She's rich. She probably has everything."

Yuki's eyes sparkled. "Then we don't buy something she needs. We buy something she'll remember."

Kaito considered this. For once, the logic was sound.

"We should go to the mall together," Yuki declared. "Tomorrow after school. The three of us. We'll find the perfect gift."

Hikari shrugged. "Fine with me."

Kaito nodded. "Acceptable."

That evening, in four different homes, conversations unfolded.

At the Sato household:

Kaito entered to find Aiko in the living room, reading a book. She looked up as he walked in.

"You're later than usual," she observed.

"Riko invited us to her birthday party," Kaito said simply. "Saturday."

Aiko's eyebrows rose. "The Aoyama girl? The one on the council?"

Kaito nodded.

Aiko smiled—that warm, knowing smile she always had. "That's wonderful, Kaito. You should go. And bring something nice." She paused. "Do you need help wrapping it?"

"No. I'm going to the mall tomorrow with Hikari and Yuki to find something."

Aiko's smile widened. "A group shopping trip? With friends?" She reached over and ruffled his hair before he could dodge. "My little brother is growing up."

Kaito's expression remained flat, but he didn't pull away.

---

At the Tanaka household:

Hikari walked through the door to find Kenji already home, sprawled on the floor with his game console.

"Yo," he greeted without looking up.

Hikari dropped her bag. "Going to a birthday party Saturday. Riko's. Going to the mall tomorrow with Kaito and Yuki to find a gift."

Kenji's character died on screen. He sat up so fast his console clattered to the floor. "Wait—YOU? Going to a PARTY? With FRIENDS?"

"It's not a big deal."

"It's the BIGGEST deal!" Kenji scrambled to his feet, grabbing her shoulders with exaggerated seriousness. "My little sister—the one who sleeps through everything—is going to a SOCIAL EVENT! This is HISTORIC!"

Hikari's eye twitched. "I'm going to my room."

"Tell me everything at dinner!" he called after her. "And I want to meet these friends someday!"

The door slammed. But Kenji was already grinning, pulling out his phone to text Kaito.

Kenji: HEY. My sister is going to a PARTY because of you. I owe you.

---

At the Nakamura household:

Yuki burst through the front door like a small hurricane.

"MOM! DAD! I HAVE NEWS!"

Her parents appeared from the living room, accustomed to their daughter's dramatic entrances.

"My friend Riko invited me to her birthday party Saturday!" Yuki announced, bouncing on her heels. "She's amazing—super smart and pretty and kind of intimidating but in a cool way! And tomorrow I'm going to the mall with Kaito and Hikari to find her a gift!"

Her mother's face softened into a warm smile. "That's wonderful, sweetheart."

Her father beamed. "Making friends already. We knew you would."

Yuki's parents opened their arms, and she launched herself into a group hug without hesitation.

"I'm really happy," Yuki mumbled into the embrace. "I really like them. All of them."

Her mother held her tight. "Good friends are hard to find. You hold onto them, okay?"

Yuki nodded, squeezing tighter.

---

At the Aoyama household:

Riko entered her home to find her younger sister, Aoyama Mei, already at the dining table doing homework. Mei was in her third year of middle school—thirteen years old, with the same sharp eyes as Riko but a softer, more open expression.

"You're smiling," Mei observed immediately. "That's weird."

Riko's smile didn't fade. "I invited some friends to my birthday party."

Mei's pencil stopped moving. She looked up slowly, her eyes wide. "Friends? You? The one who said 'social connections are strategic alliances'?"

"That was before."

"Before WHAT?"

Riko didn't answer directly. Instead, she sat across from her sister, her expression softer than Mei had ever seen. "They're coming. All of them. Kaito-senpai, Hikari-san, and Yuki-san."

Mei stared at her. Then a slow grin spread across her face. "Oh my god. My perfect, emotionless sister has friends. Actual friends. This is the best day of my life."

"Don't be dramatic."

"I'm going to tell Mom and Dad!" Mei jumped up, already running toward the kitchen. "MOM! DAD! RIKO HAS FRIENDS COMING TO HER PARTY!"

Riko sighed, but the smile never left her face.

---

That night, in four different homes, four different people thought about Saturday.

Riko, lying in her perfect room, staring at her perfect ceiling, smiling a perfectly imperfect smile.

Kaito, at his desk, pretending to study, but actually calculating something far more important than equations.

Hikari, in her messy room, staring at her ceiling, feeling something warm and unfamiliar in her chest.

Yuki, already asleep, dreaming of birthday chaos and the friends who made her feel like she belonged.

And in her own room, little Mei Aoyama was already planning how to embarrass her big sister in front of her new friends.

The unseen invitation had been accepted. And Saturday couldn't come soon enough.
