Chapter 52 - Chapter 52 Reduction

Doyoon reopened the criteria document. He reversed the conditions he had lowered the previous day. The inclusion of pre-density stages was removed. The intensity threshold was restored to its original level. The residential radius was narrowed. The time window tightened.

The dots on the map immediately decreased. Overlapping markers dispersed. The screen became simpler.

Four intersections reduced to two. Corridor connections cut by half.

He remained standing, studying the display. The calculation felt cleaner. Structures separated into sequence again.

He concluded that the overload had resulted from excessive conditions. By attempting to detect early signs, he had scattered his own judgment. Only near-threshold formations were necessary. Structures could be handled one at a time.

He opened a single location. Intersection radius. Late afternoon. Density formation. Directional adjustment. Spacing narrowing. Threshold approaching.

The numbers aligned clearly.

He did not lift his wrist. He did not verify the second hand. Time would be moving at its usual pace. Only the criteria had changed.

When he minimized the screen, only a few dots remained.

If the range narrowed, choices would narrow.

He decided to believe that.

Doyoon stepped outside the building. The points on the screen had decreased, but the density in the street had not.

Pedestrians gathered at the crosswalk. A stream flowed through the building entrance. Directional adjustments repeated in small increments.

This time, he focused on one location only. The center line of the intersection. He calculated vehicle rotation radius and pedestrian stride first. Density approached threshold, then loosened. No intervention required.

He raised his head.

At the edge of his vision, movement shifted near the bus stop. He refused to look.

He had narrowed the range.

As he stepped forward, his balance faltered slightly. Not enough to stumble. Not dizziness. Only a delay in sequencing.

He stopped.

His breathing remained steady. No vertigo. No collapse. But the alignment of calculation required an extra moment.

He did not check his watch.

Spacing at the intersection remained intact.

His body was stable. His calculation was not as immediate as before.

The intersection resolved on its own.

He did not lower his gaze.

The range had narrowed.

The fatigue had not.

The flow at the intersection remained stable. Pedestrian spacing held. Vehicles did not cross the stop line. Doyoon completed the calculation and stepped back. No intervention necessary.

For that point, at least.

Then movement formed near the building entrance. The end of work hours released a surge of people at once. Someone paused at the doorway. Spacing tightened abruptly. A directional shift propagated outward.

Doyoon did not calculate immediately.

The entrance lay outside the reduced radius. Pre-density stages were no longer included in his filter.

Compression formed briefly. A bag turned sideways. A shoulder struck another. Balance wavered, then recovered. No fall. Yet contact had occurred.

He attempted to observe both points simultaneously. The intersection remained orderly. The entrance had crossed into brief instability.

He did not step forward.

The compression dissolved without escalation. No visible injury. Possibly no report.

But the structure had formed.

He understood then.

Reducing the dots on a map did not reduce the structures in the street. Narrowing the filter only narrowed his sight.

He did not look at his watch.

He reduced the range.

The structure did not shrink.
