She stood there for three full seconds before the meaning of his words slowly sank in.
Carjacking?
Before she could even open her mouth to explain, the man calmly slipped his hand into the inner pocket of his suit, took out his phone, dialed a number with practiced ease, and lifted it to his ear.
"Hello, is this Averton City Police Station?" His voice was steady and indifferent. "Yes. I'd like to report a malicious carjacking case…"
The blood drained from her face instantly.
Without even thinking, she lunged forward and snatched the phone out of his hand. Her heart was pounding wildly as she stared down at the screen, her fingers turning the device over anxiously, only to realize that the screen was completely dark.
It was on standby.
There had been no call.
A wave of humiliation surged up her spine.
