Ryan guided Mary across the dim lot, still cursing himself for parking so close.
The night air had barely settled around them when a prickling surge of danger crawled up his spine. However, he didn't pause to analyze it. The first gunshot cracked the silence, sharp as broken metal.
"Careful."
He shoved Mary down, their bodies hitting the cold ground just as a bullet sliced through the space they had occupied.
The moment the attackers paused to reload, the two of them rolled in opposite directions and sprinted for the rocky outcrop beside the car.
Mary then brushed her fingers across the surface of her mindscape and pulled out two handguns, tossing one to Ryan with practiced ease.
He caught it without looking and fired back, steady and merciless. Each shot found a target. The last pursuer collapsed with a dull thud, leaving only the fading echo of gunfire.
