Chapter 29: Harbor Grand Opening - Part 2
POV: Corwyn Darke
The growth exceeded every projection.
Within a month of opening, Duskhollow Harbor handled more traffic than I'd expected in a quarter. Word spread through merchant networks: efficient facilities, fair prices, honest dealing. Ships that had previously accepted the congestion of Blackwater Bay discovered they could save two days on northern routes—and those two days translated directly into profit.

[ VELARYON SHARE: 1,260 GOLD ]
[ NET PROFIT: 840 GOLD ]
[ POPULATION: 2,100 → 2,800 ]
The population explosion caught me off guard despite the System's warnings. Workers arrived seeking employment—dockworkers, warehouse men, craftsmen to supply the growing maritime trade. Merchants established permanent offices. Tavern keepers and brothel owners followed the money. A fishing village was becoming a town.
"We need more housing," Mira Waters reported at our morning council. She'd grown into her role as Chief Steward—a title I'd created specifically for her administrative talents. "The existing stock is at capacity. Workers are sleeping in warehouse corners, which disrupts operations."
"Commission twenty new structures. Mix of worker housing and merchant residences." I made notes on the development map spread across my desk. "Priority to areas near the dock district. People want to live close to their work."

"That's a significant expenditure," Maester Harlan observed. "Our treasury—"
"Will recover within two months of increased economic activity. Workers with homes work better. Workers who work better attract more business. The investment pays for itself."
POV: Mira Waters
The lord had been right about everything so far.
Mira reviewed the household ledgers—now expanded to include the entire town's administration—marveling at the numbers. When she'd first served House Darke, the treasury had held perhaps forty gold dragons, and even that was optimistic accounting. Now, revenue flowed in streams that would have seemed impossible a year ago.
"Chief Steward Waters." One of her assistants appeared at the door. "The merchant guild representatives are here for their appointment."
"Send them in."
The guild had formed spontaneously—merchants who'd established permanent presence organizing to protect common interests. Lord Corwyn had encouraged it, seeing organized merchants as easier to negotiate with than individual actors.
Three men entered, their fine clothes marking them as successful traders. Mira recognized them from previous dealings: Volantene silk merchants, Pentoshi spice dealers, a Gulltown shipping magnate.
"Gentlemen. What can I do for you?"
"Chief Steward." The Volantene spoke for the group. "We wish to discuss permanent warehouse allocations. The current system of rotating assignments creates uncertainty for our operations."
"I understand your concerns." Mira had anticipated this request—Lord Corwyn had predicted it weeks ago. "Lord Darke has authorized me to offer long-term leases to established merchants. Five-year terms, fixed rates, guaranteed space."
The merchants exchanged glances. "At what rates?"
"Standard fees plus twenty percent premium for exclusivity." She produced the prepared documents. "In return, you receive priority docking, dedicated storage, and guaranteed capacity during high-traffic seasons."
[ 📜 MERCHANT AGREEMENTS ]
[ LONG-TERM LEASES: 3 PROPOSED ]
[ ANNUAL VALUE: 400 GOLD ]
[ COMMITMENT PERIOD: 5 YEARS ]
[ TOTAL CONTRACT VALUE: 2,000 GOLD ]
The negotiation consumed an hour, but ended with signatures on all three contracts. Mira filed the documents carefully, adding them to the growing archive of agreements that bound merchants to Duskhollow's prosperity.
"He sees things before they happen. Plans for situations that haven't occurred yet. How does he do it?"
She'd stopped asking that question aloud. The answer didn't matter. Results mattered, and Lord Corwyn delivered results.
POV: Corwyn Darke
The revenue curve bent upward like a drawn bow.
[ 📈 GROWTH METRICS: MONTH 2 ]

[ REVENUE: 3,800 GOLD (GROSS) ]
[ NET PROFIT: 1,520 GOLD ]

[ INFRASTRUCTURE STRAIN: MODERATE ]
[ 📈 GROWTH METRICS: MONTH 3 ]
[ SHIPS SERVICED: 94 ]
[ REVENUE: 5,200 GOLD (GROSS) ]
[ NET PROFIT: 2,080 GOLD ]
[ POPULATION: 3,400 → 4,100 ]
[ INFRASTRUCTURE STRAIN: HIGH ]
I spent my days managing the chaos of success. Each morning brought new problems—housing shortages, sanitation concerns, disputes between workers, complaints from merchants. Each evening brought new opportunities—trade deals to negotiate, facilities to expand, systems to improve.
"The wells are insufficient," I told the construction foreman during one of my weekly inspections. "We need three more in the residential district. Minimum."
"That's expensive work, my lord. The water table here—"
"I don't care about the cost. I care about preventing disease outbreaks that would empty the harbor of workers and merchants alike." I marked locations on my map. "Here, here, and here. Start immediately."
[ 🛠️ INFRASTRUCTURE EXPANSION ]
[ WELLS: +3 (500 GOLD) ]
[ ROADS: EXPANDED (300 GOLD) ]
[ MARKET DISTRICT: ENLARGED (400 GOLD) ]
[ SANITATION: IMPROVED (200 GOLD) ]
[ TOTAL INVESTMENT: 1,400 GOLD ]
The expenditures ate into our growing treasury, but the alternative was worse. A harbor that couldn't support its population would collapse under its own success. Better to build infrastructure ahead of need than scramble to repair crises after they struck.
"You're working yourself to exhaustion," Maester Harlan observed one evening, finding me still at my desk long after midnight. "The human body has limits, my lord. Even yours."
"The growth has limits too. It'll stabilize once we reach carrying capacity." I set down my quill, feeling the weight of fatigue in my bones. "Another few months of this pace, and we'll have systems robust enough to handle anything."
"And if you collapse before then?"
"Then you and Mira take over until I recover." I smiled despite the tiredness. "I've trained my people well, Maester. The domain doesn't depend on me anymore. It depends on the systems I've built."
"Modest words from an immodest man."
"Realistic words from a realistic one." I rose, stretching muscles cramped from hours of sitting. "But you're right. I should sleep. Tomorrow brings more of the same."
POV: Edric
The harbor never truly slept.
Edric walked the docks at dawn, recording the night shift's activities in his ever-present notebook. Four ships had arrived during darkness, guided by the lighthouse's beam. Three more waited in the outer anchorage for morning berths.
"Busy night?" Lord Corwyn appeared beside him, also conducting an early inspection. The lord looked tired—everyone looked tired these days—but his eyes remained sharp, missing nothing.
"Seven arrivals, three departures. Warehouse four is at ninety percent capacity; we'll need to redirect overflow to warehouse two."
"Good catch. Coordinate with the dock master." Lord Corwyn surveyed the harbor, watching the morning shift begin their work. "How are you holding up, Edric?"
The question surprised him. "My lord?"
"You're working as hard as anyone. Sixteen-hour days, constant pressure, responsibilities that would challenge men twice your age." Lord Corwyn's expression was thoughtful. "You're doing well. I wanted you to know that."
Something warmed in Edric's chest—pride, gratitude, the satisfaction of recognition earned through effort.
"Thank you, my lord. I... I want to be useful. You've given me opportunities I never imagined."
"You've earned those opportunities. Keep earning them." Lord Corwyn clapped his shoulder briefly. "Now, let's review the morning manifest. We have work to do."
