Chapter 32: Political Entanglement - Part 1
The envoys arrived at midmorning, dressed in livery that cost more than most families earned in a year.
Three of them—a senior representative in silk doublet and gold chains, flanked by two younger men who carried themselves like soldiers despite their fine clothes. They moved through the guild hall like they owned it, eyes assessing everything with the casual arrogance of those accustomed to power.
[DANGER SENSE: INACTIVE]
[Note: No immediate physical threat detected]
[Assessment: Political danger, not combat danger]
Tom intercepted them at the entrance, his veteran's instincts recognizing the type immediately. "Gentlemen. May I help you?"
"We're here to see the guild master. Baron Halsten sends his regards."
"Baron Halsten. Minor nobility, significant local influence. Old money, older ambitions. Has been watching the guild's growth for months—this was inevitable."
I emerged from the planning room, maintaining the composed expression I'd learned to wear for political interactions. "I'm Finn Colen. Please, come in."
The meeting room had been prepared for exactly this kind of visit—clean, professional, neither too wealthy nor too humble. Chairs arranged for conversation rather than confrontation. Water and bread available, the traditional hospitality that signaled civilized discourse.
The senior envoy settled into his seat with practiced grace. "Master Colen. I am Lord Gerhard, speaking on behalf of Baron Halsten of the Eastern March. The Baron has been watching your organization's growth with considerable interest."
"We're honored by his attention."
"Indeed. The Covenant of Blades has accomplished remarkable things in a short time. Monster contracts cleared, merchant conspiracies exposed, operations expanding to Novigrad." Lord Gerhard's smile didn't reach his eyes. "Such success attracts notice. And such notice can be... problematic, without proper patronage."
"Here it comes."
"The Baron offers a solution to that problem. Official patronage under his house's banner. Legal protection throughout his territories. Access to contracts with noble families who normally wouldn't consider working with independent guilds." He produced a document, sliding it across the table. "The terms are quite generous."
I reviewed the contract without touching it. The terms were, indeed, generous on the surface: formal backing, noble connections, priority consideration for lucrative work. But the costs were buried in careful language.
"Forty percent of guild profits."
"A standard arrangement for patron relationships."
"Exclusivity to Baron Halsten's interests."
"The Baron wishes to ensure his investment is protected."
"And 'consultation' on major decisions. Meaning veto power over contracts, recruiting, expansion."
Lord Gerhard's expression flickered—the annoyance of someone whose careful packaging was being publicly unwrapped. "The Baron's guidance would benefit a young organization navigating complex political waters."
"His control, you mean." I pushed the contract back. "I appreciate the offer, Lord Gerhard. Please convey my gratitude to the Baron. But the Covenant of Blades maintains strict independence. We don't accept patronage from anyone."
The silence stretched. The two soldier-attendants shifted slightly—not threatening, but present. A reminder of the power differential in this conversation.
"You misunderstand," Lord Gerhard said, voice cooling. "This isn't a negotiation. The Baron has made his offer. Rejection would be... unwise."
"I understand perfectly. The Baron wants control of a successful organization without building it himself. We're not interested."
"Independent organizations often face difficulties. Permit issues. Supplier problems. Contracts that mysteriously disappear." The threats were barely veiled now. "Proper protection prevents such inconveniences."
"We'll manage."
"Will you?" Lord Gerhard stood, his attendants following. "The Baron is patient, but patience has limits. Consider carefully before rejecting this opportunity."
"I have considered. The answer is no."
He left without further pleasantries. The door closed behind them with finality that felt like the beginning of something rather than an ending.
Tom's Perspective
The kid had balls, I had to give him that.
Refusing noble patronage wasn't something people did casually. Barons had ways of making life miserable for those who displeased them—legal ways, economic ways, social ways. The Covenant was strong, but not strong enough to fight the entire weight of aristocratic pressure.
"You know what happens now," I said, once we were alone in the planning room.
"They'll apply pressure. Economic harassment, legal complications, social isolation." Finn's voice was calm, analytical. "The Baron expected us to fold immediately. When we didn't, he'll escalate gradually until we either submit or give him justification for more direct action."
"And your plan is...?"
"Endure. Document. Investigate." He was already pulling out papers, organizing the response. "I need your network active on three fronts. First, monitor any unusual activity around our suppliers—pressure, intimidation, suspicious offers. Second, track any legal or administrative actions targeting guild members or operations. Third, find out everything about Baron Halsten that isn't public knowledge."
"You want dirt on a Baron."
"I want leverage. Everyone has secrets. The Baron's power comes from appearing untouchable—if I can demonstrate that he's as vulnerable as anyone else, the power dynamic shifts."
It was cold calculation from a sixteen-year-old. The kind of thinking that took most people decades to develop. But I'd stopped being surprised by Finn's capabilities long ago.
"My contacts can dig. But it takes time, and the Baron won't wait quietly."
"I know. That's why we prepare defenses while building offense." He produced a small scroll—purchased from somewhere I couldn't identify, covered in symbols I didn't recognize. "This creates automatic documentation of all guild business. Every contract, every payment, every interaction with authorities. If the Baron tries to frame us for anything, we'll have records that prove otherwise."
"Where did you get that?"
"Trade secret." The answer he always gave for things he couldn't explain. "Deploy the network. Start with suppliers—they're the easiest pressure point and the most immediately damaging."
Finn's Perspective
The scroll cost a thousand GP.
[PURCHASE: LEGAL PROTECTION SCROLL]
[Cost: 1,000 GP]
[Effect: Automatic documentation of all guild transactions, communications, and official interactions]
[Duration: Permanent (while scroll remains intact)]
[Note: Documentation is magically verifiable and cannot be forged]
A significant expense, but insurance against manufactured accusations was worth the investment. The Baron's type always escalated to legal warfare eventually—accusations of fraud, tax evasion, criminal association. Having unimpeachable records would neutralize that entire line of attack.
The next few weeks would be difficult. Revenue would drop as the Baron's pressure squeezed our supply chains and spooked our clients. Members would face harassment. Our reputation would be tested.
But I'd faced worse. The merchant conspiracy had taught me that enemies who underestimated the Covenant paid for that mistake. The Baron was making the same error—seeing a young guild and assuming it couldn't fight back.
"He doesn't know what he's dealing with. And by the time he learns, it will be too late."
I began drafting instructions for Viktor in Novigrad—warning about potential pressure extending to our secondary operations. Then letters to our key merchant contacts, reassuring them of our commitment and subtly suggesting that those who stood by us during difficulties would be remembered when circumstances improved.
The political game had rules, just like any other game. The Baron had more pieces, more resources, more experience. But I had something he lacked: the certainty that losing wasn't an option.
