Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: New hope

The campsite slowly transformed from empty clearing to cozy home.

Yichen and Guo Lian silently took charge of the heavy work. They moved in sync, pounding tent stakes, raising poles, securing ropes. Neither talked much, but there was a quiet understanding between them two men used to physical labor, used to getting things done.

"Left side needs to go higher," Guo Lian said, holding a pole.

Yichen adjusted. "Like this?"

"Yeah."

Zhiyuan watched them for a moment, a small smile on his face. It was strange seeing Yichen work alongside someone who used to be an enemy. But here they were, building tents together.

"You just gonna stare or help?" Yichen called, grinning at him.

Zhiyuan rolled his eyes but grabbed a bag of tent stakes. "I'm supervising."

"Sure you are."

Nearby, Zhenlong had claimed a fold-out chair and was directing traffic like a retired general.

"That tent is crooked. No, the other one. Guo Lian, straighten it. Yichen, don't put the cooler there put it near the food table. Dr. Shen, why are you just standing there?"

Dr. Shen, who had been quietly organizing cooking supplies, looked up. "Because I'm waiting for someone to stop giving orders and actually help."

"I am helping. I'm managing."

"You're sitting."

"Managing requires sitting. It's strategic."

Xiao Xue burst out laughing from where she was trying and failing to roll out sleeping bags. "Uncle Zhenlong, you're so lazy!"

"I'm not lazy. I'm experienced. There's a difference."

Miss Zhang carefully arranged the food supplies on the fold-out table, making sure everything was organized. Xiao Xue kept "helping" by rearranging things and then getting distracted.

"Where should I put the chips?"

"Next to the other snacks."

"Where are the other snacks?"

"You just moved them."

"Oh. Right." Xiao Xue giggled. "Oops."

Miss Zhang smiled despite herself. "You're hopeless."

"But you love me."

"...Unfortunately."

By the time the sun started its slow descent, the camp was complete. Four tents formed a semicircle around a central fire pit. A cooking station sat nearby, stocked with food. Chairs and blankets were scattered around, waiting for people to relax.

Zhiyuan stood back, surveying their work. It looked perfect. Homely. Peaceful.

Yichen came up beside him, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Not bad, right?"

"Not bad at all." Zhiyuan leaned against him slightly. "You worked hard."

"It's what I do. Take care of things." Yichen slipped an arm around his waist. "Take care of you."

From across the camp, Xiao Xue's voice rang out. "EWWWW, you two are being cute again!"

"We're always cute," Yichen called back. "Get used to it."

"I'll never get used to it!"

Guo Lian sat on a log near the fire pit, quietly watching the chaos. Dr. Shen approached.

"You did good work today," Dr. Shen said, sitting beside him.

Guo Lian looked up and smiled "It's just setting up camp."

"It's more than that. You're part of this now." Dr. Shen nodded toward the others. "They're accepting you. Slowly, but they are."

Guo Lian looked down "Strange."

"What is?"

"Feeling like I belong somewhere."

Dr. Shen smiled softly. "Get used to it."

Zhenlong finally rose from his chair and walked to the fire pit, rubbing his hands together. "Alright. Who's making dinner? I'm hungry."

"You're always hungry," Dr. Shen said.

"Old age. Requires fuel."

Xiao Xue bounced over. "Can we make s'mores? Please please please?"

"It's not dark yet," Miss Zhang pointed out.

"So? S'mores don't care about the sun!"

Zhiyuan laughed. "Let her have s'mores. We have all night."

"YES! Zhiyuan is my favorite!" Xiao Xue ran to grab the marshmallows.

Yichen pretended to be offended. "Hey, I thought I was your favorite."

"You were. Now you're second."

"Traitor."

As the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in oranges and pinks, the camp settled into a warm, comfortable rhythm. Guo Lian quietly added wood to the fire pit, preparing for night. Dr. Shen started organizing dinner ingredients. Zhenlong sat back down, this time closer to the action. Miss Zhang arranged blankets. Xiao Xue bounced between everyone, spreading chaos and laughter.

And Yichen and Zhiyuan stood together, watching it all.

"Happy?" Yichen asked softly.

Zhiyuan leaned his head on Yichen's shoulder. "Yeah. For the first time in a long time... really happy."

Yichen kissed his hair. "Good. That's all I want."

The fire crackled to life, sending sparks into the darkening sky, as this strange, beautiful family settled into their first night under the stars.

After dinner, everyone was stuffed and sleepy. The fire had died down to glowing embers. Yawns were contagious.

Xiao Xue was the first to give in. "I'm so tired I could sleep on a rock," she mumbled, leaning heavily on Miss Zhang.

"That can be arranged," Miss Zhang said, but she was guiding her toward their tent.

"Goodnight, everyone! Don't let the bears eat us!" Xiao Xue waved sleepily before disappearing inside.

"There are no bears here," Dr. Shen called after her.

"Then don't let the mosquitoes!"

Miss Zhang's sigh was audible even through the tent walls.

Zhenlong stretched and stood up. "I'm turning in. Old bones need rest." He looked at the remaining group. "Don't stay up too late"

"Yes, Dad," Zhiyuan said with a small smile.

Zhenlong grunted and headed to his solo tent, zipping it closed behind him.

Dr. Shen and Guo Lian lingered by the fire for a moment. The silence between them was comfortable.

"We should sleep too," Dr. Shen said softly. "I'm so tired after a long day"

Guo Lian nodded. "You go ahead. I'll make sure the fire is completely out."

Dr. Shen hesitated, then reached out and briefly touched Guo Lian's arm. "Don't take too long."

Guo Lian's eyes softened. "I won't."

They walked to their shared tent a silent agreement, unspoken but understood. Dr. Shen climbed inside first. Guo Lian followed after one last check of the campsite.

Zhiyuan and Yichen were last. They stood by the dying embers, the night quiet around them.

"Ready to sleep?" Yichen asked.

"More than ready." Zhiyuan stifled a yawn. "I forgot how exhausting fresh air is."

They walked to their tent, a cozy two-person setup. Yichen unzipped it and gestured dramatically. "After you, your highness."

Zhiyuan rolled his eyes but crawled inside. Yichen followed, zipping them in.

Inside, it was small and warm. Sleeping bags laid out side by side. A small lantern hanging from the top gave off soft light.

Zhiyuan was already wiggling into his sleeping bag when Yichen grabbed him from behind.

"Yichen! What—"

Yichen pulled him close, wrapping his arms around Zhiyuan's waist and pressing his face into his neck. "Cuddle time."

"You're supposed to be in your own sleeping bag," Zhiyuan protested, but he was already leaning back into the warmth.

"This is more efficient. Body heat and all."

"You're impossible."

"And you love it." Yichen tightened his hold, nuzzling into Zhiyuan's hair. "You smell like campfire."

"So do you."

"I know. It's sexy."

Zhiyuan laughed softly. "You're ridiculous."

They lay there, tangled together, the sounds of the night filtering through the tent. Crickets. Distant water. The occasional rustle of leaves.

"Yichen?" Zhiyuan whispered.

"Mm?"

"Thank you. For everything."

Yichen pressed a kiss to his shoulder. "You don't have to thank me. Ever."

"I know. But I want to."

They were quiet for a moment. Then Yichen's hand started wandering.

"Yichen."

"What? I'm just... adjusting."

"Your hand is on my stomach, not adjusting anything."

"It's adjusting my happiness."

Zhiyuan snorted. "That's the worst line you've ever used."

"Did it work?"

"No."

"Liar. You're smiling."

Zhiyuan was, in fact, smiling. He turned in Yichen's arms to face him. In the dim light, Yichen's eye patch gave him a rugged, mysterious look. His good eye was soft, full of love.

"I love you," Zhiyuan said quietly.

Yichen's whole face softened. "I love you too. More than stupid things like sleeping bags and personal space."

"Good. Because you're never getting personal space again."

"Promise?"

Zhiyuan leaned in and kissed him softly. "Promise."

They settled back into each other, Yichen's arms wrapped securely around Zhiyuan, their legs tangled together. Outside, the night was peaceful. Inside the tent, there was warmth, safety, and the quiet joy of two people exactly where they belonged.

In the tent nearby, Dr. Shen lay on his back, staring at the tent ceiling. Guo Lian was beside him, stiff and unsure.

"You can relax," Dr. Shen murmured. "I don't bite."

A pause. Then Guo Lian shifted closer, their shoulders touching. "Like this?"

"Yeah. Like this."

Neither said anything more. But when Dr. Shen's hand found Guo Lian's in the dark, Guo Lian held on like he'd never let go.

The silence was thick but not uncomfortable. They lay side by side, the small space making it impossible not to be aware of each other's presence.

Minutes passed. Neither slept.

Guo Lian turned onto his side, facing Dr. Shen's back. In the dim light filtering through the tent, he could see the outline of the older man's shoulder, the curve of his neck.

Dr. Shen's breathing was uneven. Not asleep either.

Guo Lian's hand twitched. He wanted to reach out. He wanted to close the small distance between them. His heart this strange, unfamiliar thing that had started beating differently since Xiapu urged him forward.

Slowly, carefully, he shifted closer. His chest almost touched Dr. Shen's back. His hand hovered, unsure.

Then Dr. Shen moved.

He turned over, facing Guo Lian directly. Their faces were inches apart. Guo Lian's breath caught.

"What are you doing?" Dr. Shen asked quietly. Not angry. Just... asking.

Guo Lian swallowed. "I... want to be closer to you."

"You are close."

"Closer."

Dr. Shen studied him in the darkness. Those eyes, so often hard, were soft now. Vulnerable. Hopeful.

Guo Lian took it as encouragement. He leaned in, closing the gap—

Dr. Shen's hand came up, pressing gently against his chest, stopping him.

"Don't...I" Dr. Shen said softly.

Guo Lian blinked, confused. "What?"

"I'm older. Much older. You should know that before... before anything."

Guo Lian hovered over him, not moving back. "I'm also thirty years old, and—"

"I'm 50 years old" Dr. Shen interrupted.

Guo Lian froze completely.

Dr. Shen saw the hesitation. Felt the slight withdrawal in Guo Lian's body. His heart clenched, but he kept his face neutral. He pushed gently against Guo Lian's chest.

"See?" Dr. Shen said, a hint of something sad in his voice. "I told you. Way older. So stop messing around and just—"

Guo Lian's arms suddenly wrapped around him, pulling him close. Dr. Shen stiffened in surprise.

"No," Guo Lian said, his voice firm but gentle. "I mean... I was shocked. But not because of the age."

Dr. Shen blinked up at him. "What?"

"You don't look fifty years old" Guo Lian's thumb traced small circles on Dr. Shen's back. "At all. I thought you were maybe late thirties. Early forties at most."

Dr. Shen stared at him. "That's... that's still older."

"Just few years." Guo Lian shrugged slightly. "So?"

"So?" Dr. Shen's voice rose slightly. "So I'm too old for you. You should be with someone younger. Someone who—"

"Stop." Guo Lian's voice was quiet but firm. "I don't want someone younger. I want you."

Dr. Shen's mouth opened, then closed. He looked away, his jaw tight.

Guo Lian didn't push. He didn't lean in again. He just held him, giving him space to process.

"Give me a chance," Guo Lian whispered. "That's all I'm asking. Just a chance."

Dr. Shen was silent for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice was rough. "You don't know what you're asking."

"I know exactly what I'm asking." Guo Lian's hand came up, gently turning Dr. Shen's face back toward him. "I've spent my whole life doing what I was told. Following orders. Being a weapon. You're the first person who looked at me and saw... a person. You gave me peace. You gave me a home."

His thumb brushed Dr. Shen's cheek, feather-light. "I'm not letting that go because of a number."

Dr. Shen's eyes glistened in the darkness. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Guo Lian waited. Hoped. Breathed.

But Dr. Shen finally looked away, pulling back slightly. He turned, presenting his back to Guo Lian once more.

"Sleep now," Dr. Shen said, his voice tight. "It's getting late..."

Guo Lian's heart sank. But he didn't argue. He didn't push.

He just settled back onto his side, respecting the distance Dr. Shen had created.

"Okay," he whispered. "Goodnight, Doctor."

A long pause. Then, so soft Guo Lian almost missed it:

"Goodnight, Guo Lian."

They lay there, back to front, the space between them feeling like miles. But Guo Lian didn't give up hope. He had waited his whole life to feel something real. He could wait a little longer.

And in the darkness, Dr. Shen's hand reached back, just slightly, his fingers brushing against Guo Lian's.

It was small. It was barely anything.

But it was something.

And for now, that was enough.

The morning mist was still rising off the lake when Yichen unzipped his tent, careful not to wake Zhiyuan. He stretched, breathing in the fresh air, and was surprised to see Guo Lian already sitting by the gas stove, quietly boiling water.

"Morning," Yichen whispered, grabbing a jacket.

Guo Lian nodded. "Morning."

They worked in comfortable silence for a few minutes Yichen setting out cups and instant coffee tea for Zhiyuan, Guo Lian carefully monitoring the water. The others were still sleeping, the campsite peaceful.

Yichen poured them both coffee. They sat on a log, watching the mist slowly burn off the lake.

"So," Yichen said casually, blowing on his coffee. "What's actually going on between you two? You and Dr. Shen."

Guo Lian stiffened slightly. He stared at the water for a long moment.

"Nothing much," he finally said. "Just... friends."

Yichen studied him. Even with one eye, he could read people. It was part of the job. And Guo Lian's face was screaming something else.

"Then why do you look sad about it?" Yichen asked gently.

Guo Lian was quiet. The water boiled behind them, forgotten for a moment.

"I... love him." The words came out rough, like they hurt to admit. "And I know... deep down, I think he feels the same. But he keeps pushing me away."

"Why?"

Guo Lian let out a slow breath. "He thinks he's too old for me. Says he's way older. Like it matters."

Yichen nodded slowly, understanding. "Ah. The age thing."

"Yes."

"How much older?"

"20 years"

Yichen whistled softly. "Okay, that's... yeah, that's a gap. But not impossible."

Guo Lian looked at him, a rare vulnerability in his eyes. "You think so?"

"I know so." Yichen shrugged. "Look at me and Zhiyuan. I'm his bodyguard. He's a CEO. People probably thought we were crazy too. But here we are."

Guo Lian stared at the lake. "What should I do? I don't want to push him away by pushing too hard. But I also don't want to lose him by doing nothing."

Yichen grinned, a mischievous spark in his good eye. "You want my advice?"

"Yes."

"Okay. But remember you asked for it."

Guo Lian waited.

Yichen leaned in, lowering his voice playfully. "Step one: Be patient. He's scared. Show him you're not going anywhere."

Guo Lian nodded.

"Step two: Little things. Make him tea. Leave him notes. Touch his hand randomly. Make him feel special without making a big deal."

"Okay."

"Step three:" Yichen's grin widened. "Compliment him. A lot. Old people love compliments."

Guo Lian blinked. "He's not that old."

"I know, I know. But tell him he looks good. That he's handsome. That age doesn't matter. Drill it into his head until he believes it."

Guo Lian was actually taking mental notes. "Anything else?"

Yichen thought for a moment. "Step four: Give him space when he needs it. Don't smother him. But always be there. Consistent. Reliable. Let him see that you're not a kid playing games. You're a man who loves him."

Guo Lian absorbed this, nodding slowly. "That's... actually good advice."

"Of course it is. I'm full of wisdom."

"And experience?"

Yichen laughed softly. "Some. Mostly I just annoyed Zhiyuan until he gave in."

Guo Lian's lips twitched. "That's your strategy?"

"Hey, it worked." Yichen shrugged. "Point is everyone's different. Dr. Shen needs to feel safe. He needs to know you're serious. So be serious. Be patient. Be there."

Guo Lian looked at him, something like gratitude in his usually blank eyes. "Thank you, Yichen."

"No problem, man." Yichen clapped his shoulder. "We're family now, weirdly. Gotta look out for each other."

A small, genuine smile crossed Guo Lian's face. It transformed him completely.

From behind them, a sleepy voice called out. "Are you two having a moment without me?"

They turned to see Zhiyuan emerging from the tent, hair messy, rubbing his eyes. He looked soft and adorable.

Yichen's whole face lit up. "Morning, beautiful."

Zhiyuan blushed. "Shut up."

Guo Lian quietly turned back to the stove, giving them privacy, but his mind was full of new hope. Maybe, just maybe, there was a way.
