Chapter 28 - Flirting in the Dark

Evan was already messaging both Emily and Lena.

Both of them know how to make you feel good emotionally, but they do it in totally different ways. Emily's super open and easygoing. She'll talk about her boyfriend like it's no big deal, even tease him a little. Lena's more shy, a bit cute, and kind of holds back. Just now, Evan sent both of them a joke.

Emily, sitting in her dorm, blushed a little, but she fired back right away: "Is that all? You could be bolder!"

Lena? She buried Evan's joke beneath a flood of adorable emojis, then finally sent a message. If you put them side by side, they couldn't be more different.

You'd think Evan would have a clear favorite between the two. But honestly, he just couldn't choose. Each girl had her own charm; he felt lucky to have both.

Emily messaged again: "What time are you waking up tomorrow? If you're up early, let's grab breakfast together."

That was so her—straightforward, warm, no games.

Evan replied, "I'll definitely be up early. I'm hitting the track at seven for a run. We can have breakfast after."

"Running?" Emily's face lit up in surprise in her dorm. She hadn't expected that. But she replied almost instantly, "I'm free tomorrow morning. Want to run together?"

"Okay," Evan said.

As soon as he sent the message, his phone buzzed again. Lena this time.

She wondered why he hadn't replied for a few minutes and asked if he was sleepy.

Evan sighed. This was the downside of juggling two girlfriends. When you focus on one, the other feels ignored.

"Not really dozing off," he typed back. "Just had something to do."

"Oh, okay," Lena replied, not pushing the issue. "Are you done now?"

"I'm done," he answered.

Lena said, "Okay, I want to tell you something."

"Go ahead."

"It's nothing big. I'm about to quit my job at the 4S store. My best friend's company is hiring, so I'm just going to join her there."

Lena typed this from her apartment, feeling a little shy. The real reason she quit was that she didn't want Evan to worry.

"Really? That's great. Honestly, I never liked you working as a salesperson there," Evan replied, raising an eyebrow.

"Why?" Lena asked.

"Because you'd draw too much attention," Evan shot back.

And that was true. Lena was beautiful, and people noticed.

She blushed, but she loved hearing that. It made her feel cared for.

"It's not that bad," she typed, then added, "Besides, I'm your girlfriend now. It doesn't matter if others are interested."

Honestly, that hit Evan right in the heart. He felt something when he read those words, picturing her face.

But just as he started feeling sentimental, his phone buzzed again. Emily this time.

"Hello, is this the police? My boyfriend hasn't replied to my messages for several minutes. He could be missing."

Evan got pulled right back in, bouncing between chats with Emily and Lena Before long, it was eleven.

Lena said goodnight—she was sleepy.

Evan replied, said his own goodnight, and finally felt some relief. Now he only had to keep up with Emily.

Having too many girlfriends isn't always as great as it sounds.

Evan barely finished that thought when he saw a new friend request. The profile pic was a girl, maybe someone from online. The username was just a moon emoji.

The note said: Evan? Please accept my friend request?

He frowned, staring at it. Did she even know his name? Who was this?

Curious, Evan accepted and sent back just a question mark.

Then he typed, "Who are you?"

Meanwhile, over in the girls' dorm, Jasmine was lying in bed and saw Evan accept her request. She felt a little rush of excitement. Yep, she was the one who just added him.

Why? Honestly, she was a bit jealous.

Her boyfriend Nathan gave her a gift—some clothes that cost maybe $100, But Emily's boyfriend, Evan, gave Emily an expensive bag. That stung.

So Jasmine thought, why not add Evan? She did have his info, after all.

Jasmine had Evan's id—no doubt about that. Nathan messaged her last night, and she just forwarded it to Emily. So yeah, she's got his contact info.

First step: add him. Then, see if she could actually swoop in and steal him. That's what she really wanted, deep down.

She knew she wasn't as stunning as Emily, but come on, she still turned heads. Guys always asked for her, and ever since college started, she'd had plenty of attention from both classmates and older students.

Who's to say Evan wouldn't go for her type? If he did, maybe she'd end up as his girlfriend. And if that happened, maybe she'd get to show off something like that crazy expensive LV bag just like Emily.

So Jasmine figured, why not go for it? She decided to add Evan right then and there.

A moment later, Evan accepted her request. Just like that. Jasmine felt a rush of excitement. She couldn't help but glance at Emily, still lying on her bed, busy with her phone.

Sorry, Emily, but I'm about to steal your boyfriend. You can't really blame me—guys like Evan, with their money and status, are exactly who every girl wants.

------

"Say something. Who are you?"

"I'm deleting this."

Over in the boys' dorm, Evan frowned at his phone. He sent the message and waited, but there was no reply. So he just typed again, straight to the point.

"No, please don't delete me."

The second Jasmine saw Evan's message, she snapped out of her daydream and fired off a reply. She didn't dare type slow—what if Evan really deleted her? That would ruin everything. Her plan to steal her boyfriend would go up in smoke. No way she could let that happen.

She wanted more than just the win, honestly, she couldn't wait to see the look on Emily's face if she pulled this off. The frustration, the defeat—Jasmine could practically feel her heart racing just imagining it.

She knew she wasn't as pretty as Emily. So what? If Evan liked her vibe, she had the advantage. That was enough.

"Tell me, who are you?"

While Jasmine was still lost in her little victory fantasy, Evan's reply popped up.

"I'm Jasmine." She typed fast, then tossed in a cute kitten emoji with its mouth covered. She held her breath, waiting for whatever Evan would say next.

-------

Meanwhile, over in the guys' dorm, Evan frowned at his phone. Jasmine? Wasn't that Nathan's girlfriend? Why would she add him out of nowhere?

He glanced over at Nathan, sprawled out on his bed, glued to his phone, swearing at his game like usual.

"So what if I suck at games? At least I have a girlfriend—unlike you, you sad single dog. And my girlfriend's beautiful."

Nathan bragged on, letting the glow from his phone light up his smug face. Evan just rolled his eyes and turned back to his own phone.

"Why aren't you saying anything? Did you forget who I am?"

Back in the girls' dorm, Jasmine started to get nervous when Evan didn't reply. Only a few seconds had passed, but she couldn't sit still. She fired off another message, then scrolled through her photo album, picked out a selfie she really liked, and sent it over.

In the picture, she flashed a peace sign at the camera. Honestly, she looked good—maybe not as glamorous as Emily or Evan, but definitely up there. Nathan hadn't lied; she was easily a class beauty. If she had to score herself, she'd give herself an 80. Her body wasn't bad either. She cranked up the filter, making the whole thing look extra polished and gorgeous.

"Hey, you remember me now, right?" She tossed in another emoji, this time a cute little girl with a hand over her mouth.

Jasmine couldn't help herself—th7e tone was flirty, playful. She waited, almost holding her breath.

"What's up?" Evan finally replied. He found it interesting that Jasmine had suddenly added him, but figured she probably wanted something. He started typing again: "I can't really help, but maybe you can ask your boyfriend Nathan..."

Before he even finished, Jasmine replied: "Nothing much, just wanted to chat. You seem interesting. I thought it'd be fun to talk to you."

Evan stared at her message, his expression shifting. The way she said it—it was pretty clear what she meant. There was a vibe.

But seriously? Did she really think it was okay to say stuff like that when she had a boyfriend?

He paused, weighing his response. Evan wasn't exactly a saint—he already had two girlfriends, and he knew relationships weren't always clean or simple.

Still, this situation needed to be handled carefully. Jasmine had a boyfriend, and acting too openly right now would only invite unnecessary trouble.

It wasn't about principles—it was about timing. If things crossed a line, Evan didn't mind women approaching him—but he refused to be the one who destroyed someone else's relationship first For now, stepping back was the smarter move.

"Why aren't you answering? Are you falling asleep?"

In the girls' dorm, Emily stared at her phone. Five or six minutes had gone by, and Evan still hadn't replied. She couldn't resist nudging him.

She yawned as she typed. Honestly, she was tired too.

She kept a strict bedtime—had to, really. Good sleep meant good skin, and her looks were all she had going for her, or at least, that's what she believed.

If it wasn't for Evan, she'd have passed out ages ago.

Yeah, she was fighting to stay awake, but it was a losing battle.

"I am a little sleepy," Evan finally answered. He shook off whatever he'd been lost in and tapped out his reply.

"Let's just sleep, goodnight?" Emily wrote back.

"Okay, goodnight."

She started to put her phone away, but then another thought popped up.

"We're meeting at the playground tomorrow, right?."

"Yeah, let's meet at the playground."

She grinned at her screen. "Okay, goodnight for real—sweet dreams~"

Emily lay back, sent the message, and yawned again.

Even half-asleep, she looked effortlessly charming. She slipped her phone under her pillow, shut her eyes, and that was it—out like a light.

She was really exhausted.

It didn't take long before she drifted off completely.

But in the same room, Jasmine stared at her own phone, wide awake. No matter how many times she checked, Evan still hadn't replied to her messages.

The longer she watched Emily typing away, the more irritated she got.

It was obvious she was chatting with Evan.

That stung.

Evan ignored her but answered Emily right away. What was that about? Did she have zero appeal?

Sure, she wasn't as stunning as Emily, but she wasn't plain either. The difference between them wasn't that huge.

Still, Evan just didn't care about her.

Jasmine clenched her jaw, pushed her thoughts down, and checked her phone again.

Her chat with Evan was still open on the screen.

She never logged out.

Emily's asleep now. That means she can probably talk to me, right?

Are you still there?

She sent the message, paused, then figured she had to take a chance if she wanted anything to happen. So she turned on her camera and snapped a quick photo of her leg.

The dorm lights were already off. The flash went off, bright and loud in the dark.

"Jass what are you doing? Why are you taking pictures this late?" Rose's voice came from the bed next to hers, curious and a little suspicious.

"Oh, I didn't take any pictures. I just thought a mosquito bit me, so I wanted to check," Jasmine blurted out, making up a reason on the spot.

"Mosquitoes? Come on, the air conditioning's on in here. That keeps them out. At home, I never see mosquitoes when the AC is running. They hate the cold."

Rose paused, a trace of surprise flickering across her face, but she didn't dwell on it for long.

"You must've opened the window last night for some fresh air," she said casually. "That's probably how the mosquitoes got in. Want me to swat them for you?"

"No, no, it's fine. I'll take care of it myself," Jasmine replied quickly, waving her hand. "You should sleep."

"Alright," Rose nodded. "If you need anything, just call me."

"Mm, I will."

Only after Rose lowered her head and returned her attention to her phone did Jasmine quietly exhale, the tension in her shoulders easing.
