Chapter 43 — The Man in the Shadows
Kiera's heart pounded so violently she was sure it would echo through the entire mansion. The man in the hallway didn't move, didn't blink, just watched her with eyes that seemed to see right through her. Kade stepped slightly in front of her, placing a protective arm across her shoulders.
"Who are you?" Kade demanded, his voice tight with controlled fury.
The man inclined his head slightly, a smile that didn't reach his eyes playing on his lips. "My name doesn't matter… yet."
Kiera's stomach churned. "Why are you here? How do you know my name?"
The man's gaze flicked to her and back to Kade. "Because I've been following her… for years. And I've been waiting for the right moment to step out of the shadows."
Kade's jaw tightened. "Step out of the shadows? That doesn't explain why you're in my house at midnight."
