Chapter 78 — Shadows and Sparks

Kaelen POV

Morning light slipped through the stained-glass windows, dust motes glinting in mana streams that floated lazily in the air. The hall was already buzzing—not loud, but alive with the subtle energy of dozens of first-years sizing each other up.

I moved through them carefully, hands visible, gloves hiding the protective and spatial rings beneath. The academy ring pulsed faintly, linking me to the mana grid. I could feel the flow of other students' magic like whispers brushing against my senses.

A boy with curly brown hair nudged me as I passed. "Finally moving away from the wall?" he asked. "Planning to actually participate today?"

"I plan to observe first," I said evenly. "Learn who's dangerous before acting."

He laughed, shaking his head. "Good plan. Some of Class V are… unpredictable."

Observation first. That had always been my training—measure, calculate, anticipate. Here, magic added another layer.

The instructors arrived quietly, moving among the students with an aura that commanded attention. I could feel the subtle shifts in their mana—observation, assessment, calculation.

"Pair off," Rethan's voice cut through the murmurs, calm but precise. "Controlled dueling. Magic only. Precision over power."

I caught the faint pulse of the protective ring, warning me that instincts were needed even here. Sword hand empty, gloves on, I let my fingers flex casually. Magic first. Observation always.

I found a quiet corner and fell into step with a thin elf girl. Her eyes flicked to my hands for a fraction of a second—no visible artifacts. Good. I wouldn't reveal the rings. Not yet.

She lifted a sphere of light in her palm. I mirrored her with a controlled wind spell, containing it perfectly, testing reaction time. The protective ring hummed faintly against my pulse, spatial ring ready to store anything instantly.

"You're precise," she murmured. "Not flashy, but clean."

"Control matters more than display," I said. She gave a faint nod, respect passing silently between us.

Across the hall, the human noble flared fire recklessly. The lower-class girl opposite him flinched but adapted, slowly mastering control. A dwarf and an elf combined elemental spells, creating intricate patterns in the air and on the stone floor. Even in chaos, I cataloged everything—reaction times, confidence, mental patterns, subtle strength.

A soft breeze of observation pressed against me—Thalen. He hadn't discovered the hidden rings yet, but the smooth rhythm of my mana would not escape him. I let him watch. Let him wait.

The exercise ended quietly. Students returned to their seats, some flushed, some grinning. The elf girl beside me gave a small nod. "You handle mana differently," she said.

"Precision is survival," I replied.

Lunch was a mix of human, elf, and dwarf dishes. Conversation ebbed and flowed—gossip, rivalry, assessment speculation. I kept my eyes and ears open. A boy with gold-flecked mana—noble blood—leaned toward me. "I heard your name," he said, voice low. "Class V, right? You… hide something, don't you?"

I let the corner of my mouth twitch. "Observation often hides more than action." He frowned, uncertain, and left. Perfect. Curiosity was a weapon in itself.

Afternoon came with more theory, an elf instructor showing subtle techniques for manipulating mana lines. Students absorbed it differently—some scribbling furiously, some meditating silently. I let it sink in, layering it on my existing training, the rings humming quietly, waiting.

During a break, I overheard dwarves discussing ancient swords, families, and artifact techniques. Names of legendary clans and rival academies spilled quietly, a world bigger than this hall, beyond human, elf, and dwarf.

By evening, the day had passed in a blur of observation, silent calculation, and restrained mana practice. The hall emptied slowly, conversations muted, strategies forming under polite tones.
