The words hung in the air like a death sentence.
My eyes snapped to Ezra, horror flooding through me so completely that for a moment I couldn't breathe. No. No, no, no. What was he doing? How could he confess to murder in a room full of nobles?
I tried to shake my head, tried to plead with my eyes for him to stop, to take it back, but he wasn't looking at me anymore.

"I'm confessing to killing a monster," Ezra said, his voice steady despite the blood streaming down his face. "There's a difference."
The crowd erupted. Nobles gasped and whispered, their voices rising in waves. The guards holding Ezra tightened their grip, but he didn't struggle. He just stood there, chin lifted, meeting Aubrey's gaze without flinching.
