It had been three days since I'd last seen the King.
Not that I was counting. Not that it mattered. But the absence registered anyway. There have been no bath to prepare, no chambers to clean.
Margaret mentioned in passing that he'd been locked away with Aubrey's advisors and the feast organizers, finalizing everything for the gathering tomorrow night.
Which should have been a relief, but it wasn't. Because while the King had disappeared into his preparations, Lady Aubrey had found me.
The first day had been subtle.
Small corrections delivered with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. The tea wasn't hot enough. The linens weren't folded to the exact way she preferred. My posture when I entered a room was too hunched, and it was an embarrassment to her household.
I'd adjusted, fixed what I could. But of course it wasn't enough.
