Lucian had always prided himself on his memory.

Two thousand years provided ample opportunity to forget things. Names, faces, entire decades if you weren't careful. But he had trained himself early to remember what mattered, to file things properly, to keep the architecture of his own history intact and accessible.

Which was why the headache, when it started, felt immediately wrong.

It began during dinner.

He was alone in his study, which was his preferred state during meals because eating with other people required a degree of performance he had long since stopped finding worthwhile. He had a book open on the desk, a glass of wine that was older than most countries, and the particular kind of quiet that only came with genuine solitude.

Then the pain arrived.

Not gradually. All at once. A spike of it behind his eyes that made him set down his glass with more force than he intended.

He pressed his fingers to his temples.
