Chapter Twenty – Paranormal Realm 18
The front door clicked open just as Rowan was toweling his hair dry.
He froze.
Voices drifted in from the entryway, low, familiar, unmistakable.
His parents.
Rowan blinked, towel still clutched in his hands, heart skipping in surprise. They weren't supposed to be back until the next day. He took a step out of his room, peering down the hallway as their silhouettes crossed the threshold.
His mother entered first, her steps slowing the moment her eyes landed on him.
Her smile faltered.
Not the warm, automatic smile she always gave him. This one twitched, stiffened, then vanished entirely. Her gaze swept over him too quickly,his face, his hair, his clothes, before quickly darting away.
His father stopped short behind her. Frozen in place as he stared at him.
The air shifted.
