Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Shadow on the Wall

Frost crunched beneath the boots of Link as he stepped off the wheelhouse. Before him rose a monument of ancient magic and ice. It was a structure so vast that it seemed to hold up the very sky. Castle Black crouched at its base like a collection of abandoned toys.

[Status Alert: Location Reached: The Wall]

[Ambient Temperature: 15 degrees Celsius below zero]

[System Note: Magical interference detected within the ice]

"It is bigger than I remembered," Jaime whispered while standing beside Link. The Kingslayer was wrapped in heavy black furs. His Lannister pride was hidden beneath the utilitarian layers of a scout. "And it is much colder."

"Ice does not care about your southron blood, Ser Jaime," a voice rasped from the gate.

Jeor Mormont, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, walked toward them. His beard was thick with rime and his eyes were hard. Behind him stood a young man with a direwolf at his side. Jon Snow looked at Link with a mixture of curiosity and recognition.

[Target Identified: Jon Snow]

[Status: Potential Ally or Main Protagonist]

[Affection: 10 out of 100]

"The message of Lord Stark arrived ahead of you," Mormont said while looking at the royal seal on the scroll. "He says you have seen things. He says you have seen things that my rangers are only starting to whisper about in the dark."

"I have seen the end of the world, Lord Commander," Link replied. He felt the familiar hum of the System in his mind. It was pulsing faster now as it reacted to something beyond the gates. "And the end is closer than you think."

Suddenly, a horn blasted from the top of the Wall. A single and long note echoed across the frozen landscape.

"Rangers returning?" Jaime asked. His hand instinctively went to the hilt of his sword.

"No," Jon Snow said. His face turned pale as he looked toward the forest. "One blast is for rangers. Two blasts is for wildlings."

The horn blew again. A second blast sounded. it was louder and more urgent than the first one.

The men in the courtyard froze. They waited for a third blast, which was the signal for White Walkers, but it never came. Instead, the horn cut off abruptly. It was followed by a scream that seemed to fall from the very top of the Wall.

[Quest Alert: First Breach]

[Objective: Defend the gate]

[Enemy Level: Unknown]

"To the gate!" Mormont roared.

Link did not wait. He drew his blackened short sword. The steel sang as it left the scabbard. Even without his full health, the adrenaline surge from the System made his movements fluid and lethal.

"Jaime! With me!" Link shouted.

As they reached the heavy iron bars of the tunnel, a shape slammed into the wood from the other side. It was not a wildling. It was a brother of the Night's Watch. It was what was left of one. His eyes were a glowing and sapphire blue. His skin was the color of a week old corpse.

[Target: Wight: Former Ranger]

[Weakness: Fire or Dragonglass]

"Seven Hells," Jaime breathed. His eyes widened in terror. "It is true. It is all true."

"Save the shock for later!" Link yelled. He kicked a brazier of hot coals toward the gate. The orange glow reflected in the dead eyes of the creature. "Pick up a torch! Only fire stops them!"
