Near the school entrance, Georgie stood clutching a sheet of pink stationery, his eyes darting nervously toward the student lockers.
That was the spot he had chosen—Ground Zero for his confession to Veronica.
Before long, Veronica appeared in front of her locker, wearing a black jacket with her backpack slung over her shoulder.
Deep breath…
Georgie tried to calm his nerves, psyching himself up.
Just as he was about to make his move, he saw Sheldon walking down the hall.
Veronica spotted Sheldon too. Her face lit up, and she hurried over to say hi. They chatted for a moment—Georgie couldn't hear what about—and then, to Georgie's horror, Veronica leaned down and gave Sheldon a hug.
Watching the goddess of his dreams hugging his little brother made Georgie seethe with jealousy.
As soon as Sheldon said goodbye to Veronica and reached the entrance, Georgie yanked him aside.
"How do you know Veronica?" Georgie asked, his voice dripping with acid. Ruled by teenage hormones, he was currently viewing his own little brother as a potential rival.
"I'm tutoring her in math. Thanks to my help, she managed to pull a C- on her latest test," Sheldon said, looking slightly pleased with himself. He was completely oblivious to the tension.
In Sheldon's mind, dragging a poor student up to a passing grade was a monumental achievement.
"Between you and me, Veronica isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. I had to expend a significant amount of effort just to get her to pass," Sheldon added, doubling down on his own importance.
"Is that so? Ha-ha," Georgie gave a hollow, fake laugh. He couldn't care less about Sheldon's bragging.
All that mattered was the realization that the hug was just a thank-you for tutoring.
This revelation made Georgie feel a million times better. Curious, he asked, "By the way, when did you start teaching her?"
"Hmm," Sheldon thought for a moment. "About two weeks ago, I suppose."
"That long? How did I not know about this?" Georgie realized Veronica had known Sheldon even longer than she'd known him.
It made him feel like he didn't know enough about her.
"Did I not mention it?" Sheldon shrugged. "Veronica used to get help from her sister, but her sister isn't around anymore, so she came to me."
Hearing that Veronica had a sister, Georgie pressed for more intel. "Not around? Where did her sister go?"
"I heard she was sent to prison for wire fraud," Sheldon stated matter-of-factly.
From this, one could surmise that Veronica's sister was definitely intelligent, if nothing else.
Georgie felt a bit awkward hearing that his crush's sister was a convict. In his eyes, Veronica was supposed to be the embodiment of perfection.
Losing interest in digging any deeper, Georgie said, "Alright, Sheldon, time for you to go home."
Clearly, Georgie wanted to clear the field so he could proceed with his confession plan.
Sheldon didn't particularly care about Georgie's mood swings. He glanced at his brother, tucked his textbook under his arm, and walked out of the building.
Georgie, now alone at the entrance, saw Veronica closing her locker. He immediately hurried over.
"Hey there, Veronica. Fancy meeting you here," Georgie said, using a painfully cheesy pickup line.
For some reason, whenever he faced Veronica, his brain just short-circuited.
"What a coincidence," Veronica said, glancing at him with a chilly expression. "Do you have anything to say about what happened at the church baptism?"
She was obviously still mad about Georgie's rude behavior that day.
"I apologize for how I acted. Honestly, I don't know what got into me. It was probably just… hormones," Georgie stammered, using the "hormones" excuse again. Even he knew it sounded lame.
"Fine. I forgive you." Looking at the clumsy, panicked boy in front of her, Veronica decided to be the bigger person.
"I know my excuse is… wait, huh?" Georgie was still trying to explain when her words actually registered. He looked at her in surprise. "You really forgive me?"
"Yes," Veronica nodded with a smile.
Truth be told, having dealt with a few ex-boyfriends, Veronica didn't actually take Georgie's behavior that seriously.
"That's great!" Georgie, still oblivious to reality, saw that charming smile and felt like he was looking at an angel.
Veronica, seeing that Georgie had his forgiveness but was now just standing there blocking her path with a goofy grin, frowned slightly. "Do you need something else?"
Her subtext was clear: If not, get out of the way.
"I… I actually have something important to tell you…" Georgie stammered, raising the hand clutching the pink letter.
In that moment, that piece of paper felt heavy enough to crush him.
"What is this?" Veronica looked at the trembling letter in front of her and reached out to take it.
"Well if it isn't Little Georgie. What do you want with my girlfriend?"
Accompanying the voice, a tall, good-looking guy stepped in and snatched the letter before Veronica could touch it.
It was Dustin, a senior (12th grader), and currently Veronica's new boyfriend.
"Oh, right. Georgie, let me introduce you. This is my boyfriend, Dustin. We met at the church study group yesterday…" Veronica explained.
Boyfriend… friend… end…
Hearing that introduction, Georgie felt his world collapse. He didn't hear a word she said after that.
The word "Boyfriend" was just echoing endlessly in his skull.
"Hey, you didn't answer. What do you want with my girlfriend?" Dustin asked, snapping Georgie back to reality.
"Pink paper? Don't tell me this is a love letter!" As an outsider, Dustin immediately clocked what was going on.
He deliberately wrapped his arm around Veronica, unfolded the letter with one hand, and smirked. "Let's see what you wrote here."
" 'My Dearest Veronica…' " Dustin read aloud in a mocking, dramatic voice. " 'Every minute apart from you feels like an eternity, but somehow longer than eternity…' "
When Georgie saw that Veronica didn't push Dustin away, he was already crushed and wanted to leave.
But hearing Dustin read his love letter out loud like a comedy routine? He wanted to die.
It was a public execution.
As the students in the hallway started hooting and laughing, Georgie's mind went blank. He shoved through the crowd and turned to run back into the school building.
Watching Georgie flee with his tail between his legs, Dustin felt great. Feeding off the crowd's laughter, he continued reading smugly, " 'Oh, I can't eat, I can't sleep. It's like there's a hole in my heart that only you can fi—' "
"That's enough!"
Mike stepped forward and snatched the paper out of Dustin's hand.
Mike had just come down to the first floor and witnessed the whole farce. In his opinion, Dustin was taking the tough-guy act way too far.
Plus, Mike was on good terms with Georgie, so he naturally despised Dustin's bullying behavior.
"You…" Dustin, annoyed that his showboating was interrupted, glared at the intruder.
But when he saw it was Mike, the anger on his face evaporated instantly. "You're Mike? From the junior class?"
Mike was a bit of a legend at school, so Dustin knew who he was. He just didn't understand why Mike seemed so hostile toward him.
"Georgie is my friend. Show him some respect," Mike said, answering the unasked question.
"You…" Being warned by a younger student in front of a crowd was hard for Dustin to swallow.
But when he looked into Mike's sharp eyes, a sudden, intense wave of fear hit him. It was a primal feeling—like being stared down by a predator.
Sensing actual danger, Dustin wisely swallowed the insults he was about to spit out.
As Mike's physical conditioning had improved, he had developed a natural, intimidating presence. It wasn't magic; it was just the overwhelming pressure of someone who could physically destroy you. If he wanted to, he could make a normal person's knees buckle just by looking at them.
It sounds exaggerated, but anyone who has stood face-to-face with a pro fighter or a wild animal knows exactly what that pressure feels like.
Right now, Dustin—who was half a head shorter than Mike—was feeling exactly that.
Mike glanced at Dustin's legs, which were shaking uncontrollably, decided he wasn't worth the time, and turned to leave the school.
In the hallway behind him, once Mike was gone, Dustin's legs finally gave out, and he collapsed onto the floor in a heap.
